Chapter 14: The Daughter Who Had Been Hidden

The first call came from the county courthouse.

The second came from the hospital.

The third came from a number Daniel didn't recognize.

Officer Bennett answered the courthouse call on speaker.

“This is Officer Bennett.””

A clerk spoke quickly.

“There's a woman here asking to file documents related to the Parker family trust. She says her name is Olivia Reeves.””

Margaret immediately stood.

“Don't let her file anything!””

Officer Bennett looked at her.

“Sit down.””

Margaret ignored her.

“Those documents are stolen property!””

The clerk continued.

“She has identification and a sealed envelope. She also says there's an immediate threat to a minor child.””

Officer Bennett exchanged a glance with Daniel.

“Keep her there. We're sending an officer.””

The call ended.

Daniel looked at Samuel.

“Why didn't you tell me Olivia was trying to help?””

Samuel lowered his head.

“Because I was ashamed.””

“That's not an answer.””

Samuel wiped his eyes.

“Olivia discovered the altered trust documents six months ago. She came to me with copies and asked me to help expose Margaret.””

“And?””

“I told her to stay away from the family.””

Daniel stared.

“You protected Margaret.””

“I thought I was protecting my daughter.””

Hank shook his head.

“That's what everyone keeps saying.””

Samuel looked toward him.

“I know how it sounds.””

“It sounds like a lot of people sacrificed children to protect themselves.””

Samuel had no response.

Then Rebecca spoke.

“Olivia didn't give up.””

Everyone turned.

“She contacted me secretly. She told me she'd found the original adoption papers and the original will.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Why didn't she contact me?””

“Because Margaret had people watching your house. Olivia thought any contact would put Ethan in danger.””

Daniel lowered his head.

The same fear had kept everyone silent.

And the people who wanted to control the family had used that silence as a weapon.

Officer Bennett received another call.

This time, she smiled slightly.

“We found her.””

Daniel stood.

“Where?””

“At the courthouse. She's safe.””

Margaret began shouting.

“You cannot let her give those papers to anyone!””

Officer Bennett turned.

“Ma'am, I strongly suggest you stop interfering.””

Margaret pointed at Daniel.

“You have no idea what that woman is capable of!””

Daniel stared at her.

“She raised your daughter?””

Margaret's expression hardened.

“She has always been ungrateful.””

Rebecca laughed bitterly.

“Olivia was the one who took care of you when you were sick. She was the one who brought you groceries. She was the one who stayed when everyone else left.””

Margaret turned.

“That's enough.””

“No,” Rebecca said.

“It's not.””

She stepped forward.

“You abandoned her. You told people she died. You made Samuel hide her existence. And now you're pretending she owes you loyalty?””

Margaret's eyes flashed.

“You don't know anything about our family.””

Rebecca shook her head.

“I know you destroyed it.””

A police vehicle arrived at the farmhouse twenty minutes later.

A young woman stepped out.

She wore a red jacket and carried a thick brown envelope.

Her dark hair fell over one side of her face.

A faint scar marked her left cheek.

Samuel immediately stood.

“Olivia.””

She stopped.

For a moment, she looked at him.

Then she walked past him.

“Don't.””

Samuel's eyes filled.

“Sweetheart…”

“I said don't.””

Daniel approached her.

“I'm Daniel.””

Olivia nodded.

“I know.””

“Thank you for helping Rebecca.””

Olivia looked toward the ambulance.

“Is she okay?””

Rebecca raised a hand.

“I'm here.””

Olivia's face softened.

Then she turned toward Daniel.

“I brought everything.””

She placed the envelope on the hood of a police vehicle.

Inside were original trust documents, hospital records, adoption papers, and a series of handwritten letters.

Officer Bennett examined the first page.

“Where did you get these?””

“My grandfather kept them in a safe deposit box. I found the key in my mother's old jewelry case.””

Margaret laughed.

“You stole from me!””

Olivia looked at her.

“Grandfather left them to me.””

“That's impossible.””

Olivia pulled out a sealed letter.

“Would you like to read it?””

Margaret said nothing.

Officer Bennett opened the letter.

It was written by Daniel's grandfather, Arthur Parker.

The first paragraph explained that Margaret had attempted to change the family trust after discovering the birth of the twins.

The second paragraph confirmed that Ethan had been legally adopted by Daniel and Linda.

The third paragraph explained the most important condition.

The trust could not be accessed by Margaret under any circumstances.

Not even if Daniel died.

Rebecca read the final section aloud.

My grandson Daniel is Ethan's father in every sense that matters. I have seen the love between them. No biological claim, forged document, or financial arrangement should ever separate them.

Daniel closed his eyes.

He felt something inside him finally loosen.

Margaret shook her head.

“That's not valid.””

Olivia handed Officer Bennett another document.

“The original was notarized and registered. This is the certified copy.””

Officer Bennett examined the seal.

Then she nodded.

“This appears to be legitimate.””

Margaret's voice rose.

“I demand a lawyer!””

“You're entitled to one,” Officer Bennett replied.

Margaret turned toward Olivia.

“You have no idea what you've done.””

Olivia stared at her.

“I know exactly what I've done.””

She reached into her jacket and removed a small photograph.

It showed her and Ethan as newborn babies.

On the back was a handwritten note.

Two children. One family. Neither child is property.

Olivia looked at Margaret.

“You kept us apart for fourteen years because you wanted money.””

Margaret's expression hardened.

“I did what I had to do.””

“No. You did what you wanted.””

Then Olivia turned toward Daniel.

“There's one more thing.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

Olivia pulled out a second envelope.

It contained a bank statement.

The account belonged to Northstar Family Holdings.

But the transaction history showed payments that had never been mentioned.

One payment of $250,000.

Another of $175,000.

And a final transfer of $90,000.

Daniel studied the dates.

“These payments were made after the insurance claim was frozen.””

Olivia nodded.

“That's because the money didn't come from the insurance company.””

“Where did it come from?””

Olivia looked toward Margaret.

“Your mother's personal accounts.””

Officer Bennett frowned.

“Are you saying she paid someone?””

Olivia nodded.

“She paid a private investigator to locate Ethan and arrange his transfer to another family.””

Daniel went cold.

“Another family?””

Olivia handed over the final page.

It contained a name and an address.

A couple had been paid to take Ethan out of state.

The date was two weeks earlier.

Daniel looked at Margaret.

“You were going to sell my son?””

Margaret's face twisted.

“He would have had a better life.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You were going to take him away from everyone who loves him.””

Margaret stared at him.

“He was never yours.””

Daniel's voice dropped.

“He was mine when he was born. He was mine when he cried. He was mine when he called me Dad. And he'll be mine when he's old enough to understand everything you've done.””

Margaret finally looked afraid.

Officer Bennett turned to her partner.

“Detain her pending further investigation. Secure every document.””

As officers approached, Margaret suddenly screamed.

“You think this is over?””

Nobody answered.

She looked at Olivia.

“You should have stayed hidden.””

Olivia stood perfectly still.

“I was hidden long enough.””

Margaret was escorted toward the police vehicle.

But just before the door closed, she turned toward Daniel.

“There's something you still don't know.””

Daniel stared.

“What now?””

Margaret smiled.

“Your grandfather didn't leave twelve million dollars to the family.””

She paused.

“He left twenty-four million.””

Then the vehicle door slammed.

Daniel looked at Olivia.

She slowly nodded.

“She's right.””

Hank exhaled.

“Good Lord.””

Olivia opened the final page of the trust.

There was another beneficiary.

A name that nobody expected.

*The Parker Children's Protection Foundation.*

And beside it was a handwritten instruction.

The funds must be used to protect children whose families have been destroyed by fraud, abandonment, and abuse.

Daniel looked at Hank.

For the first time that night, the older biker smiled.

“Your grandfather sounds like he knew exactly what was coming.””

But Olivia wasn't smiling.

She was reading another line.

A line that revealed the trust had already been activated.

May you like

And the person authorized to release the first payment was not Daniel.

It was Ethan.
