Chapter 4: The Signature That Changed Everything

Ethan stepped away from his mother.

“No.””

The word was barely audible.

Daniel looked at him, then at Linda, who stood frozen in the motel doorway.

“Ethan, sweetheart,” Linda whispered.

The boy shook his head.

“You told me Dad was dead. You said he didn't want to see me. You said he left us.””

Linda's eyes filled with tears.

“I know.””

“And now Dad says you signed the paper.””

“I know, baby.””

Ethan backed away another step.

“Did you help Ray?””

Linda covered her mouth.

Ray suddenly laughed.

It was an ugly, triumphant sound.

“Finally. Someone understands what's happening.””

Hank turned toward him.

“Careful. You're about to make things worse.””

Ray ignored him.

He looked at Daniel.

“You should have stayed away. You had your chance to disappear, and you couldn't leave well enough alone.””

Daniel held the document tightly.

“You filed a fraudulent insurance claim in my name. You stole money from my family. You kept my son away from me for eight months.””

Ray shrugged.

“You weren't exactly father of the year.””

Daniel took a step forward.

“Don't talk about my son.””

“Why? Because the truth hurts?””

Hank moved between them.

“Both of you, calm down. Nobody is solving anything by throwing punches.””

Daniel stopped.

Ray smiled.

Then Linda finally spoke.

“Daniel, please let me explain.””

He looked at her.

“Did you sign that death certificate?””

Linda shook her head.

“I signed an insurance authorization. Ray told me it was necessary because you had disappeared and the company needed to release the money to support Ethan.””

Daniel held up the document.

“This isn't an authorization. It's a sworn statement identifying me as deceased.””

“I didn't read the entire document.””

“Linda, you signed it under oath.””

“I know!””

Her voice cracked.

“I know what I did.””

Ethan stared at her.

“Why?””

Linda sank onto the edge of the bed.

Ray immediately stepped forward.

“Don't listen to her. She's trying to make herself look innocent.””

Linda looked up at him.

“Shut up, Ray.””

Everyone went silent.

Ray blinked.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

Linda stood.

“You told me Daniel had been arrested. You told me he was dangerous. You told me he had another family and wanted nothing to do with Ethan.””

Ray's face hardened.

“And you believed me.””

“Yes,” Linda whispered.

“Because I trusted you.””

She turned toward Daniel.

“When you disappeared from our lives, Ray told me you had chosen to leave. He showed me messages that looked like they came from your number.””

Daniel frowned.

“I never sent those messages.””

“I know that now.””

“How did you find out?””

Linda looked toward the old phone in Ethan's hands.

“Because I checked the phone records last month. Your number had been blocked. All your emails were being forwarded to an account I didn't recognize.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Ray.””

Ray spread his hands.

“Technology can be manipulated. You're accusing me of things you can't prove.””

Hank picked up the folder again.

“Maybe we should let the police decide that.””

Ray's eyes flickered toward the staircase.

At that exact moment, sirens sounded outside.

A patrol car pulled into the motel parking lot.

Two officers stepped out.

Hank walked toward the landing.

“Officer! We're upstairs!””

The first officer, a woman in her forties named Officer Bennett, climbed the stairs with her partner.

She looked at the open suitcase, the cash, the scattered documents, and Ray standing between two bikers.

“What happened here?””

Hank gave her a concise explanation.

Officer Bennett looked at Ray.

“Sir, I need you to step away from everyone.””

Ray raised his hands.

“Of course. But before you listen to these people, understand that my wife has mental health problems. My stepson has behavioral issues. This man”—he pointed at Daniel—“has been harassing us.””

Officer Bennett didn't react.

“That's a lot of claims. We'll take them one at a time.””

She turned toward Linda.

“Ma'am, are you injured?””

Linda showed her wrist.

“I was locked in that room.””

“By whom?””

“Ray.””

Ray shook his head.

“She locked herself in because she was having an episode.””

Officer Bennett looked at the chain lying on the floor.

“Interesting.””

Her partner began photographing the scene.

The cash was documented. The insurance papers were collected. The officers separated everyone for statements.

When Officer Bennett approached Ethan, she crouched.

“Hi, Ethan. I'm Officer Bennett. Can you tell me what happened?””

Ethan looked at his father.

Daniel nodded gently.

“You can tell her the truth, buddy.””

The boy took a breath.

“Ray said my dad was dead. He told me not to answer his calls. He took my phone and said Dad didn't love me.””

Officer Bennett listened carefully.

“Did Ray ever hurt you?””

Ethan hesitated.

Then he rolled up his sweatshirt sleeve.

Several faint bruises marked his upper arm.

Daniel's face changed.

Linda began crying.

Officer Bennett photographed the marks and asked Ethan whether he felt safe.

“No,” he whispered.

The officer stood.

“Thank you for telling me.””

Then she turned toward Daniel.

“Sir, I need to ask you something. Why did you bring those documents here?””

Daniel opened his jacket and removed another folder.

“Because I received a call this morning from an investigator at the insurance company. They told me someone had submitted a death claim using my name.””

He placed the folder on the table.

“I've been investigating this for weeks.””

Officer Bennett opened it.

Inside were bank transfers, emails, and copies of insurance documents.

But there was one page that made her stop.

A transaction had been made two days earlier.

The amount was $85,000.

The recipient was an account belonging to Linda Parker.

Linda stared at it.

“I never received that money.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Then someone used your identity too.””

Officer Bennett exchanged a glance with her partner.

Ray suddenly stopped smiling.

And when the officer turned to him, her next question made his face go completely white.

“Mr. Mitchell, who is Martin Cole?””

Ray said nothing.

Daniel answered instead.

“He's the insurance agent who issued the policy.””

Officer Bennett looked at the signature on the document.

Then she looked at Ray.

“Because according to this statement, Martin Cole witnessed Linda signing the paperwork.””

Linda shook her head.

“I've never met that man.””

Daniel closed the folder.

“Neither have I.””

May you like

Officer Bennett picked up her radio.

And Ray finally understood that the situation was no longer under his control.
