Chapter 8: The Woman Who Knew Adrian’s Darkest Secret
Adrian Cross had always been good at pretending.
That was what made him dangerous.
He didn't look like a villain.
Villains in stories were easy to recognize.
They had cold eyes.
Cruel smiles.
Obvious intentions.
Adrian was different.
He smiled warmly.
He shook hands.
He donated money.
He remembered people's birthdays.
He knew exactly what version of himself the world wanted to see.
That was his greatest weapon.
And I had spent eight years falling for it.
But now I knew the truth.
The most dangerous people weren't always the ones who looked threatening.
Sometimes they were the ones everyone trusted.
The next morning, I met with someone who knew Adrian before I did.
His former business partner.
Nathan Reed.
A man who had disappeared from Adrian's company five years earlier.
According to public records, Nathan left because of "creative differences.""
But Marcus found something else.
A confidential lawsuit.
A sealed settlement.
A warning that Nathan should never discuss the Phoenix Project.
When Nathan arrived at the private meeting location, he looked like someone carrying a burden for years.
He sat across from me.
"You look like your father.""
The words immediately caught my attention.
"You knew him?""
Nathan nodded.
"He saved my life.""
I studied him.
"Then why did you disappear?""
His expression darkened.
"Because I learned what Adrian was willing to do.""
The room became quiet.
"Tell me.""
Nathan looked at Marcus.
Then Caleb.
Then me.
"Your husband wasn't always like this.""
I almost smiled.
Everyone said that.
"He changed.""
"When?""
Nathan answered immediately.
"When he realized he could get everything he wanted.""
He leaned forward.
"Adrian was brilliant. Your father saw that.""
"My father trusted him?""
"Yes.""
That hurt.
Because my father had always been careful.
He had always been able to read people.
If he trusted Adrian...
Why?
Nathan continued.
"Your father believed Adrian could help complete the Phoenix Project.""
"And then?""
"Adrian became obsessed.""
"With the technology?""
Nathan shook his head.
"With control.""
He explained that Adrian discovered the true value of Phoenix wasn't just the technology.
It was the data.
The algorithms.
The potential influence.
A system capable of predicting behavior, improving decisions, and changing entire industries.
In the wrong hands, it could become a weapon.
"Your father wanted to shut it down," Nathan said.
"But Adrian didn't.""
"No.""
Nathan looked at me.
"He tried to take it.""
My stomach tightened.
"Did my father know?""
Nathan nodded.
"That's why he disappeared.""
The room went silent.
"Disappeared?""
Nathan looked uncomfortable.
"I don't know exactly what happened the night your father died.""
My heart sank.
"But?""
"But I know Adrian was there.""
Every sound around me seemed to disappear.
My father's death.
The secret project.
Adrian.
All connected.
"Why didn't you tell anyone?""
Nathan laughed bitterly.
"Because Adrian made sure nobody would believe me.""
He pulled a small device from his pocket.
A storage drive.
"I kept this because I knew someday someone would need proof.""
Caleb immediately reached for it.
Nathan stopped him.
"Only Evelyn.""
Everyone looked surprised.
"Why me?""
"Because your father trusted you.""
I took the drive.
It was tiny.
Almost meaningless.
Yet it felt heavier than anything I had ever held.
"What is on it?""
Nathan looked at me.
"The conversation your father had with Adrian the night everything changed.""
My heart stopped.
"You recorded it?""
"No.""
Nathan shook his head.
"Your father did.""
I looked at the drive.
A recording.
A final conversation.
A piece of the past waiting to reveal itself.
That night, we returned to Julian's home.
Nobody spoke as the file loaded.
The audio began with static.
Then a voice.
My father's voice.
Older.
Tired.
But unmistakable.
"Adrian, this has gone too far.""
I froze.
Then Adrian's voice.
"You don't understand what you're holding.""
My hands tightened.
"I understand exactly what I'm holding," my father said.
"You think this technology belongs to whoever can buy it.""
A pause.
"It belongs to humanity.""
Adrian laughed.
A cold laugh.
"You were always too idealistic.""
The recording continued.
My father's voice became quieter.
"If you continue this path, I will expose everything.""
Silence.
Then Adrian said:
"You wouldn't.""
My father replied:
"You underestimate me.""
Another pause.
Then Adrian spoke.
And the words destroyed whatever hope I had left.
"Maybe that's your problem, Daniel. You always believed people were better than they really are.""
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
Because we all heard it.
The arrogance.
The threat.
The truth.
Adrian had been there.
Adrian had known.
Adrian had a motive.
I stared at the screen.
The man I married wasn't just a liar.
He was connected to the darkest moment of my life.
Marcus placed a hand on my shoulder.
"We have enough to move forward.""
But I shook my head.
"No.""
Everyone looked at me.
I looked at the recording.
At Adrian's voice.
At my father's final warning.
"We don't have enough.""
I stood.
"We need the rest.""
Caleb frowned.
"Evelyn—"
"If Adrian hid this for eight years, there is more.""
I looked at my brothers.
"And I want everything.""
Because this wasn't just about my marriage anymore.
It wasn't just about revenge.
It was about my father.
May you like
It was about the truth he died trying to protect.
And I would not stop until the world knew what happened.
