Chapter 5: The Secret Adrian Buried for Eight Years
The first thing I learned about betrayal was that it rarely arrived all at once.
It came in pieces.
A strange phone call.
A missing document.
A conversation that suddenly stopped when you entered the room.
A look between two people who thought you weren't paying attention.
Adrian's betrayal hadn't started with Vanessa.
Vanessa was only the final piece of a much larger puzzle.
The beginning happened eight years earlier.
The year I met him.
The year I thought my life was changing.
I remembered the first time Adrian walked into my life.
He wasn't the man everyone saw now.
Back then, he was ambitious.
Driven.
Charming.
He told me he wanted to build something meaningful.
Not just a company.
A legacy.
He said money wasn't what mattered.
Impact was.
And I believed him.
That was the hardest part.
Not that he lied.
That I believed him.
I believed the version of Adrian he showed me.
The version who stayed awake talking with me until sunrise.
The version who brought me coffee every morning.
The version who promised me:
"I don't care about your family. I don't care about your name. I just want you.""
Those words stayed with me for years.
Because they were the reason I trusted him.
But now, sitting in Julian's office, I wondered if those words had ever been real.
Marcus placed another document in front of me.
"This is what we found this morning.""
I looked down.
My heart stopped.
The document wasn't about money.
It was a photograph.
A photograph of me.
Eight years ago.
Before Adrian and I were married.
I looked at my brothers.
"Where did you get this?""
Marcus hesitated.
"From Adrian's private files.""
A chill ran through me.
"Why would he have this?""
Nobody answered.
I picked up the photograph.
It showed me leaving a restaurant.
Nothing unusual.
Except someone had written notes beside it.
My name.
My family's names.
Details about my brothers.
Details about my parents.
Details about my background.
My hands went cold.
"He investigated me.""
Julian nodded.
"Before he married you.""
The room became silent.
Everything inside me felt like it shifted.
Because suddenly, all those memories changed.
The sweet conversations.
The promises.
The moments where he said he didn't care about my family.
Maybe he did care.
Maybe that was the entire point.
"How long did he know?""
Caleb answered quietly.
"From the beginning.""
I closed my eyes.
Eight years.
Eight years of believing I had hidden my identity.
Eight years of believing Adrian loved ordinary Evelyn.
But he knew.
He always knew.
"He married me because of my family.""
The words came out softly.
Marcus didn't deny it.
"We're still confirming everything.""
"But you think so.""
He looked at me.
"Yes.""
The pain was different from the slap.
The slap hurt my body.
This hurt somewhere deeper.
Because the slap was one moment.
This was eight years.
Eight years of memories I no longer knew how to trust.
I stood and walked toward the window.
The city below continued moving.
People laughing.
Cars driving.
Life continuing.
While mine felt like it was being rewritten.
"Why didn't he ask for help?"" I whispered.
My brothers looked confused.
"What?""
"If he wanted power. Money. Connections.""
I turned around.
"He could have just asked.""
Julian's expression softened.
"Because people like Adrian don't want relationships.""
"They want advantages.""
The truth hurt because it was simple.
Adrian didn't marry me because he loved what was inside me.
He married me because he saw what was around me.
My family.
My influence.
My future.
Everything he could gain.
A knock interrupted the conversation.
Everyone became alert.
Caleb moved toward the door.
When he opened it, a woman stood outside.
I recognized her immediately.
Vanessa.
But she looked nothing like the confident woman from the gala.
No designer dress.
No perfect makeup.
No arrogant smile.
Just fear.
"Evelyn.""
My brothers immediately moved between us.
Vanessa looked at them.
"I need to talk to her.""
Caleb's expression was cold.
"That isn't happening.""
"Please.""
Something in her voice made me stop.
I stepped forward.
"What do you want?""
Vanessa looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw something I never expected.
Guilt.
"I lied to you.""
I almost laughed.
"That's a long list.""
She swallowed.
"I know.""
"Then why are you here?""
She looked around.
Then lowered her voice.
"Because Adrian isn't afraid of losing his company.""
A strange feeling moved through me.
"Then what is he afraid of?""
Vanessa looked directly into my eyes.
"The truth about why he married you.""
My heart stopped.
Because I already knew.
Didn't I?
But the fear in her face told me I was wrong.
There was more.
Something even darker.
"What truth?""
Vanessa whispered:
"Adrian didn't choose you because of your family's power.""
A pause.
"He chose you because of something your father did.""
The room went silent.
My father's name had not been mentioned.
Not like this.
Not in years.
I stepped closer.
"What are you talking about?""
Vanessa looked terrified.
"Your father left behind something Adrian has been searching for since before he met you.""
I stared at her.
"Something?""
She nodded.
"Something worth billions.""
The words hung in the air.
And suddenly, everything made sense.
The investigation.
The marriage.
The lies.
Adrian wasn't just chasing my family name.
He was chasing something else.
May you like
Something hidden.
Something my father had taken to his grave.
