Chapter 6: The Truth My Father Took to His Grave
I spent the next hour trying to convince myself that Vanessa was lying.
It would have been easier.
A dishonest person telling another dishonest person was nothing new.
Vanessa had betrayed me.
She had helped destroy my marriage.
She had stood beside Adrian while he humiliated me.
Trusting her felt impossible.
But there was one problem.
Her fear looked real.
People could fake confidence.
They could fake charm.
They could fake innocence.
But fear?
Fear was harder to manufacture.
Especially the kind that comes from knowing something dangerous.
"Start talking," Marcus said.
Vanessa sat across from us.
For the first time, she looked small.
"I didn't know everything.""
Nobody believed her.
She noticed.
"I swear.""
I crossed my arms.
"You had an affair with my husband.""
She lowered her eyes.
"Yes.""
"You helped him betray me.""
"Yes.""
"Why should I believe anything you say now?""
She looked at me.
"Because Adrian is going to destroy me too.""
The honesty surprised me.
She wasn't asking forgiveness.
She was asking survival.
"What does he have on you?""
Her face changed.
"Everything.""
She took a deep breath.
"When Adrian approached me, he told me he was unhappy in his marriage.""
I almost smiled.
The oldest lie.
"He told me you were cold. That you didn't love him.""
I looked away.
Because I had heard those lies before.
"Then what changed?""
Vanessa hesitated.
"He started asking questions.""
"What questions?""
"About your father.""
The room became silent.
I felt my heartbeat increase.
"My father has been dead for years.""
"I know.""
"Then why would Adrian care?""
Vanessa looked at me.
"Because your father created something before he died.""
Marcus leaned forward.
"What?""
She shook her head.
"I don't know exactly.""
"You're lying.""
"I'm not.""
Her voice cracked.
"Adrian never trusted anyone completely. Not even me.""
Julian frowned.
"What do you know?""
Vanessa looked down.
"I know he kept a locked room in his office.""
I exchanged a glance with my brothers.
"A room?""
She nodded.
"He had files about your family. About your father. About a company he used to work with.""
My mind raced.
My father was a respected businessman.
A man known for honesty.
A man who taught us that reputation was built through actions, not words.
Could he have hidden something?
No.
It didn't feel possible.
"Did Adrian ever mention a name?"" I asked.
Vanessa became quiet.
Then she whispered:
"The Phoenix Project.""
The name meant nothing to me.
But it meant something to my brothers.
Marcus's expression changed instantly.
Julian stopped moving.
Caleb looked toward the window.
"You know it," I said.
Nobody answered.
"Tell me.""
Marcus sighed.
"The Phoenix Project was a confidential research initiative twenty years ago.""
"What kind of research?""
Julian looked serious.
"Technology.""
"How serious?""
He looked at me.
"Potentially world-changing.""
I stared at him.
"And my father was involved?""
Marcus nodded slowly.
"Yes.""
The room felt smaller.
My entire life had been built around things I didn't know.
Secrets.
Hidden histories.
People protecting me from truths I never asked to discover.
But Adrian wasn't protecting me.
He was using those secrets.
"Why didn't anyone tell me?""
My voice was quieter than I expected.
Marcus looked guilty.
"Because your father made us promise.""
"What promise?""
"That if anything happened to him, we would keep you away from it.""
I laughed softly.
Not because it was funny.
Because it hurt.
Everyone had been protecting me.
My brothers.
My father.
Everyone except the person I married.
"And Adrian found out anyway.""
Vanessa nodded.
"He spent years looking for it.""
"Why?""
She looked at me.
"Because whoever controls the Phoenix Project controls the future.""
A silence followed.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
Everyone looked at it.
This time, I answered.
"Hello?""
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then a man's voice came through.
A voice I didn't recognize.
"Evelyn Hart.""
My entire body went still.
"Who is this?""
The man ignored my question.
"You need to stop searching for the Phoenix Project.""
My brothers immediately moved closer.
The voice continued.
"Your husband made mistakes. But you are making a bigger one.""
My grip tightened around the phone.
"Who are you?""
A pause.
Then:
"Someone who knew your father.""
The line went silent for a moment.
Then the man said the words that changed everything.
"Your father didn't die protecting that secret.""
My blood ran cold.
"He died because someone wanted it.""
The call ended.
I stood frozen.
For years, I believed my father's death was an accident.
A tragedy.
Something painful but natural.
Now someone was telling me something else.
Someone was saying my father had been murdered.
And Adrian Cross wasn't just the man who betrayed my marriage.
He was connected to the biggest mystery of my life.
I looked at my brothers.
For the first time, I saw something I had rarely seen from them.
Fear.
And that frightened me more than anything.
May you like
Because if Marcus, Julian, and Caleb were afraid...
Then whatever Adrian had been searching for all these years was more dangerous than we imagined.
