Chapter 4: The Heiress Nobody Wanted
I read the final paragraph three times.
My daughter.
Not Daniel.
Not Chloe.
Not Eleanor.
An unborn child who hadn't even opened her eyes yet had been named the successor to the Sterling empire.
I looked at Arthur.
“Is this real?””
He nodded.
“Every word.””
Daniel reached for the document.
“Let me see that.””
I handed it to him.
His eyes moved quickly across the page. At first, he looked confused. Then his expression tightened.
“What is this supposed to mean?””
Margaret Collins folded her hands.
“It means that the controlling voting shares of Sterling Holdings are held through the Heritage Trust. Under the amended succession provisions, the next generation's primary beneficiary is your unborn daughter.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Why would Grandfather do this?””
Arthur answered calmly.
“Because I have spent forty years watching this family confuse inheritance with entitlement.””
Eleanor shook her head.
“This is absurd. The company belongs to the Sterling family.””
“It does,” Arthur replied.
“And the trust determines who controls it.””
“Daniel is your grandson!””
“And Vivienne is the person who discovered the corruption in our trust records.””
Eleanor laughed bitterly.
“So you reward her by handing her an empire?””
Arthur leaned on his walking stick.
“No. I reward her by correcting an injustice.””
Chloe stepped forward, her wedding dress rustling across the marble floor.
“What about me?””
Arthur turned.
“What about you?””
“The Matriarch Ring was supposed to be mine!””
“It was never yours.””
“But Mom promised it to me!””
“Your mother promised you something she had no authority to give.””
Chloe's face twisted.
She turned toward Daniel.
“Say something!””
Daniel was still holding the document.
“Grandfather, I don't understand. You've always said the company would eventually pass to me.””
“I said you would have an opportunity to earn a leadership position.””
“You said I was your successor!””
“I said you were being considered.””
Daniel's fingers tightened around the paper.
“And now you're giving everything to my unborn daughter?””
Arthur's voice softened slightly.
“I'm giving her the protection this family desperately needs.””
Eleanor stepped forward.
“Arthur, listen to yourself. This child isn't even born. She cannot run a corporation.””
“She doesn't need to run it. The trust has an independent board and professional management.””
“Then who controls her shares?””
Margaret answered.
“Until she reaches the age specified in the trust, her interests will be administered by an independent fiduciary committee. Vivienne has been appointed as her legal guardian for trust-related matters, subject to the court's confirmation.””
Eleanor stared at me.
“So you control it.””
“No,” I said.
“I protect my daughter's interests.””
“Convenient distinction.””
I looked at her.
“It's a distinction you should have understood before attempting to frame me for stealing an asset you never owned.””
Chloe suddenly threw her bouquet onto the table.
“I hate this family!””
Nobody responded.
She turned toward me.
“You planned this. You got pregnant, made Arthur feel sorry for you, and manipulated him into giving you everything!””
Daniel immediately looked at her.
“Chloe, don't.””
“Why not? It's true!””
I slowly stood.
My back hurt, but I refused to remain seated while she insulted my child.
“Chloe, I didn't become pregnant to inherit anything. I didn't marry Daniel for money. And I certainly didn't spend three years being humiliated by your family because I wanted a diamond ring.””
She laughed.
“Then why stay?””
The question landed harder than she intended.
I looked at Daniel.
“That's something I've been asking myself.””
He lowered his head.
Arthur tapped his walking stick.
“Enough. The police are here.””
Two uniformed officers entered the ballroom.
The security supervisor approached them, followed by Margaret and Patricia.
One officer began taking statements.
The other requested the original camera access logs.
Eleanor immediately stepped toward them.
“Officers, this is a family misunderstanding. My daughter misplaced an heirloom, and we've located it.””
The officer looked at the torn fabric of my gown.
“Ma'am, we also have a report of an alleged assault.””
Eleanor stiffened.
“That is ridiculous.””
I raised my hand slightly.
“My dress was torn when Chloe grabbed me, and Eleanor stepped on the train.””
The officer glanced toward Chloe.
“Did you grab her?””
Chloe looked offended.
“I was trying to recover stolen property!””
“That's not what I asked.””
Chloe's mouth opened.
Then she looked at her mother.
Eleanor intervened.
“She was emotional. It's her wedding day.””
The officer wrote something down.
“Being emotional doesn't give anyone permission to assault another person.””
Daniel approached me.
“Vivienne, can we talk privately?””
I looked at him.
“About what?””
“About us.””
I almost smiled.
“Now?””
“Please.””
I glanced at the police officers.
“Your mother is being questioned about planting stolen property in my handbag. Your sister has just been caught admitting she grabbed me. And you want to discuss our marriage?””
Daniel's face reddened.
“I didn't know any of this was happening.””
“You didn't know your mother was framing me. You didn't know the ring belonged to the trust. You didn't know your daughter was named its successor.””
He swallowed.
“But I know you.””
I stared at him.
“Do you?””
Before he could answer, Margaret approached with another envelope.
“Vivienne, there is something else.””
I took it.
“What now?””
“Arthur asked me to bring this tonight in case the trust amendment became necessary.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a document titled:
*Sterling Holdings Emergency Governance Provision.*
I read the first paragraph.
Then I looked up.
“Arthur, what's this?””
His expression had become unusually serious.
“It's the provision that protects the company if an immediate family member attempts to interfere with the succession.””
Eleanor stopped talking to the police.
“What provision?””
Margaret answered.
“An individual who knowingly attempts to defraud the trust, manipulate its assets, or intimidate a beneficiary may be subject to an immediate review of their corporate authority.””
Daniel looked at his mother.
“Mom, what did you do?””
Eleanor's lips parted.
For once, she had no answer.
Then Patricia, standing beside the police officer, raised her phone.
“There's something else you need to see.””
She turned the screen toward Margaret.
“Mrs. Sterling didn't just ask me to plant the ring.””
Patricia's voice cracked.
“She asked me to destroy something first.””
Margaret took the phone.
“What?””
Patricia looked directly at Eleanor.
“The original succession letter.””
Arthur went completely still.
May you like
Because that letter contained the name of the person who had first been chosen to inherit Sterling Holdings.
And it had been signed long before I ever met Daniel.
