Chapter 10: The Bride Who Had Been Planning Everything

“Chloe?””

Daniel stared at the authorization record on Margaret's tablet.

“That can't be right.””

Margaret enlarged the document.

“The payment was approved using a device registered to Chloe Sterling. However, the electronic authorization carries Daniel's digital signature.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I never approved three hundred and fifty thousand dollars.””

“Then someone used your credentials,” Margaret replied.

I looked at the transaction date.

It was three days before the wedding.

“Why would Chloe have access to Daniel's authorization credentials?””

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel suddenly remembered something.

“Mom gave Chloe access to the family foundation's administrative account last year. She said it was for managing charitable events.””

Margaret raised an eyebrow.

“Did you authorize that?””

“No. Mom did.””

I looked at him.

“So your sister had access to the foundation's money, and your mother had access to your signature?””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Apparently.””

I turned toward Margaret.

“Can we establish where the payment went?””

She tapped the screen.

“The funds were transferred through two intermediary accounts. The final recipient was a private legal consultancy.””

“Owned by whom?””

Margaret examined the registration information.

Her expression changed.

“Chloe.””

Daniel looked confused.

“What?””

“The consultancy is registered under Chloe's married name and her personal tax identification.””

I stared at the screen.

“So the money came from the family foundation, passed through a consultancy owned by Chloe, and was supposedly used to secure guardianship of my daughter?””

Margaret nodded.

“That's what the preliminary records indicate.””

Daniel sank into the chair.

“My sister?””

I looked at him.

“You're still surprised?””

He didn't answer.

My phone vibrated.

A message from Rebecca Cole.

*Mrs. Sterling, I've discovered another payment scheduled for tomorrow morning. It requires immediate attention.*

I showed Margaret.

She called Rebecca back.

“What's the amount?””

Rebecca answered.

“Two million dollars.””

Daniel stood.

“Two million?””

“It's listed as a special beneficiary protection expense,” Rebecca explained.

“The payment is scheduled to go to an offshore trust administrator.””

Margaret's expression hardened.

“Who authorized it?””

Rebecca hesitated.

“The request was submitted by Eleanor Sterling.””

“Has it been released?””

“No. I placed a temporary hold because the supporting documents appeared inconsistent.””

“Keep it frozen. Send every supporting document to our counsel.””

Rebecca agreed.

After the call, Margaret looked at me.

“This is no longer simply a family dispute. We may be dealing with deliberate financial misconduct.””

I looked toward the window.

Outside, the morning traffic moved normally.

People were going to work, buying coffee, dropping children at school.

My world, meanwhile, had become a collection of forged signatures and legal traps.

I placed my hand over my stomach.

“Margaret, I want one thing.””

“What?””

“I want my daughter protected, even if every Sterling asset disappears tomorrow.””

Margaret nodded.

“Then that's what we'll prioritize.””

Daniel approached the bed.

“Vivienne, I need to tell you something about Chloe.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“She came to me about two months ago. She said Mom was worried about the succession. She wanted me to sign some documents transferring my voting rights into a separate family arrangement.””

“Did you?””

“No. I refused.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

He rubbed his forehead.

“Because I didn't think it mattered. I thought it was another argument about the company.””

I looked at him for several seconds.

“You have a remarkable talent for deciding which secrets don't matter.””

He lowered his head.

“I know.””

At 10:15 a.m., Margaret received a call from the police.

Patricia had agreed to provide a formal statement.

She had also identified the person who instructed her to place the ring in my handbag.

It wasn't Eleanor.

It was Chloe.

Margaret immediately requested that the police preserve all communications between the sisters.

Daniel looked stunned.

“Chloe did it?””

“According to Patricia, yes.””

“Why would she?””

I answered before Margaret could.

“Because your sister wanted the ring, the company, and a reason to make sure I never inherited either.””

Daniel stood motionless.

A few minutes later, Arthur arrived.

He had barely slept.

His eyes were red, and his usual confident posture had disappeared.

“Vivienne, I've spoken with the board.””

“What did they say?””

“They've approved an emergency suspension of all discretionary foundation payments until the investigation is complete.””

“Good.””

Arthur pulled out a chair.

“There's something else. Chloe has requested an emergency meeting with the board.””

Margaret frowned.

“On what grounds?””

“She claims the succession amendment was obtained through deception.””

I almost laughed.

“She's accusing me of deception?””

Arthur nodded.

“She intends to challenge the amendment and demand that the Matriarch Ring be returned to her.””

“Does she have legal standing?””

“Not as the current beneficiary.””

Margaret added, “But she may attempt to create uncertainty around the trust while the investigation is ongoing.””

I looked at Arthur.

“Let her.””

He studied me.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes. I'm done hiding from people who have mistaken my silence for weakness.””

At noon, the hospital television showed a breaking business report.

The Sterling family's private dispute had somehow reached the financial press.

A reporter stood outside Sterling Holdings headquarters.

“Questions are emerging about the company's succession structure following allegations of financial irregularities involving members of the Sterling family. Sources close to the board confirm that an emergency governance review is underway.””

Daniel stared at the television.

“Who leaked this?””

Margaret checked her phone.

“Someone from the board, most likely.””

Then the screen changed.

A photograph appeared.

Chloe.

She was standing outside a courthouse, wearing sunglasses and a cream-colored coat.

The headline read:

*STERLING HEIRESS CLAIMS FAMILY TRUST WAS MANIPULATED BY PREGNANT SISTER-IN-LAW.*

I felt my blood run cold.

Daniel grabbed his phone.

“She's gone public.””

Margaret read the article.

“She's claiming Vivienne deliberately concealed her family connection to Thomas Bennett and manipulated Arthur into changing the succession.””

Arthur shook his head.

“That's nonsense.””

But the article contained something else.

A photograph of me leaving my office.

Another of my parents' townhouse.

And a picture of my grandfather's old property.

Someone had been following my family.

I turned toward Margaret.

“Who gave them these photographs?””

“We're finding out.””

Then my phone rang.

My mother's name appeared on the screen.

I answered immediately.

“Mom?””

Her voice was shaking.

“Vivienne, sweetheart, there's a man outside the house asking questions about your grandfather.””

I sat upright.

“What man?””

“He says he's a journalist. But he keeps asking whether your grandfather left behind a second will.””

My heart began pounding.

“Don't open the door.””

“I haven't.””

“Lock everything. I'll arrange security.””

My father took the phone.

“Vivienne, listen to me. There's something you need to know.””

“What?””

He lowered his voice.

“Your grandfather didn't leave everything in the Sterling trust.””

I closed my eyes.

“What do you mean?””

“He left a sealed letter with your mother. He told her not to open it unless the Sterling family ever tried to take something from you.””

I looked at Margaret.

She immediately leaned closer.

My father continued.

“Your mother opened it this morning.””

“What did it say?””

A long silence followed.

Then he said:

“It says that if the Sterling family ever challenges your daughter's inheritance, we must reveal the second agreement.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“What second agreement?””

My father took a breath.

“The one your grandfather made directly with Arthur Sterling.””

And suddenly, I realized the family fortune might be far larger than anyone at that wedding had imagined.

But before my father could explain, someone knocked violently on his front door.

Three times.

Then a man's voice shouted:

“Mrs. Bennett! We know you have the original document!””
