Chapter 1: The Husband Who Chose His Family

Daniel walked toward me.

For one foolish second, I thought he was finally going to stand beside his wife.

Instead, he stopped between Chloe and me.

“Vivienne,” he whispered, “please don't make a scene.””

I stared at him.

Behind his shoulder, Chloe was still holding the torn edge of my maternity gown. Her mother stood with one hand resting on her diamond necklace, looking thoroughly pleased with herself.

I glanced down at my exposed shoulder, then back at Daniel.

“Your sister grabbed me. Your mother stepped on my dress. And you’re asking me not to make a scene?””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“Just let security check your purse. If you have nothing, this will be over.””

A bitter laugh escaped me.

“If?””

“That's not what I meant.””

“Then what did you mean, Daniel?””

He lowered his voice.

“Mom is already upset. Chloe's wedding is supposed to be perfect. Don't turn this into something bigger.””

I looked at him for several seconds.

Three years.

Three years of defending him when his mother insulted me. Three years of pretending his sister's cruelty was harmless teasing. Three years of swallowing words because I believed marriage meant standing together when everyone else stood against you.

And now, with our daughter eight months away from her first breath, my husband was negotiating my dignity like it was an unnecessary wedding expense.

Chloe crossed her arms.

“Are we waiting for Christmas? Search her.””

Eleanor nodded toward two security guards.

“Check her handbag and her pockets. Thoroughly.””

One of the guards approached.

“Ma'am, would you please come with us?””

I held my handbag tighter.

“No.””

Eleanor raised an eyebrow.

“Excuse me?””

“I said no. You can call the police if you believe a theft occurred. But nobody is going through my belongings because a bride decided to point at the nearest person she dislikes.””

Chloe's face reddened.

“Nearest person? You're the only person who had access to my dressing room!””

I turned toward her.

“I haven't been in your dressing room.””

“You were backstage earlier.””

“I was in the ladies' room.””

“Liar!””

Her voice echoed through the ballroom.

I felt another kick beneath my palm.

“Chloe, I am not going to argue with you. I want to leave.””

Eleanor stepped forward.

“You're not going anywhere until we find that ring.””

“Then call the police.””

Her smile disappeared.

“Do you understand what that ring means?””

I did.

Every member of the Sterling family did.

The Matriarch Ring was not simply an expensive piece of jewelry. It was an antique emerald-and-diamond ring that had belonged to the women who controlled the Sterling family estate for generations.

It was supposedly worth several million dollars.

But its real significance was something else.

According to the family's traditions, whoever wore it was recognized as the senior woman of the Sterling bloodline.

Eleanor had worn it for twenty-seven years.

She had planned to pass it to Chloe after the wedding.

I had always found the tradition ridiculous.

Especially because the ring was not actually an ordinary family heirloom.

But I kept that thought to myself.

Chloe thrust her left hand toward the crowd.

“Look! It was right here before the reception!””

A guest near the front spoke up.

“I saw you wearing it during the photographs.””

“Exactly!”” Chloe cried.

“And now it's gone!””

Eleanor turned toward the guards.

“Search everyone who came near her.””

I looked at Daniel again.

“Do you believe I stole it?””

He hesitated.

That hesitation answered everything.

“Daniel?””

He swallowed.

“I just want to clear this up.””

“By searching your pregnant wife in front of two hundred people?””

“Vivienne, please.””

“No. Answer the question.””

His eyes shifted toward his mother.

“I don't think you would deliberately hurt us.””

I almost laughed.

He couldn't even say no.

Before I could respond, a woman near the champagne fountain approached us.

She was wearing a navy evening dress and a small silver badge clipped to her jacket.

“I'm sorry to interrupt,” she said.

“I'm Margaret Ellis, the event coordinator. There is something you should know.””

Eleanor frowned.

“What?””

Margaret looked uncomfortable.

“Mrs. Sterling, the ballroom's security system recorded the entrance to the bridal suite. The footage may help establish what happened to the ring.””

Chloe went pale.

Eleanor recovered quickly.

“Wonderful. Then bring it up.””

Margaret glanced at Chloe.

“There's a complication.””

“What complication?”” Eleanor demanded.

“The camera outside the bridal suite was temporarily disabled.””

Chloe immediately pointed at me.

“She did it!””

Margaret shook her head.

“No, ma'am. The system records access to the control panel.””

She turned toward the security supervisor.

“Would you please confirm who requested the camera shutdown?””

The supervisor looked down at his tablet.

Then he looked up.

“Mrs. Chloe Sterling.””

A murmur swept across the ballroom.

Chloe's mouth opened.

“I didn't!””

Margaret remained calm.

“The request was submitted using your personal access code at 7:42 p.m.””

“That must be a mistake!””

Eleanor stepped between her daughter and the coordinator.

“My daughter has nothing to hide.””

“Then this should be easy to resolve,” I said.

Chloe spun toward me.

“You think you're clever?””

“No. I think the camera being disabled five minutes before the ring disappeared is interesting.””

“Shut up!””

She lunged toward me again.

This time, Daniel caught her arm.

“Chloe, stop.””

For the first time that evening, he had physically intervened.

But it was too late.

I saw a tiny movement near the ballroom entrance.

A young waiter was standing beside a service cart.

He looked terrified.

And he was staring directly at Chloe.

I followed his gaze.

He quickly looked away.

Something about his expression made my stomach tighten.

“Excuse me,” I called.

The waiter froze.

“Sir?””

He shook his head.

“Nothing, ma'am.””

I took a small step toward him.

“Do you know something?””

Before he could answer, Eleanor's voice cut through the room.

“Enough! This woman is trying to distract everyone!””

She pointed at me again.

“Call the police.””

The security supervisor reached for his radio.

Then the waiter suddenly spoke.

“I saw someone put something in her bag.””

The entire ballroom went silent again.

Chloe's face changed.

May you like

And this time, it wasn't satisfaction.

It was fear.
