Calm

Chapter 7: The Son Denise Hid From Everyone

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The name sat in the room like something too heavy for anyone to pick up.

Ethan.

A person who had apparently existed this entire time.

A person my father had never known about.

A person Denise had hidden while building a completely different life.

I looked at her.

The woman who had spent six years telling me that honesty mattered.

The woman who had lectured me about respect and trust.

The woman who made me feel guilty for wanting simple things.

And now I realized she had been carrying an entire secret family history behind that perfect smile.

My father leaned forward.

"How old is he?""

Denise looked down.

"Twenty-three.""

The number shocked me.

Twenty-three.

Older than me.

Older than some of her own lies.

"You had a son before we met?"" my father asked.

She nodded.

"Yes.""

"And you never told me?""

Her eyes filled with frustration.

"I was afraid.""

My father stared at her.

"Afraid of what?""

She didn't answer right away.

That hesitation told us there was more.

There was always more with Denise.

Finally, she whispered:

"Afraid you would leave.""

The room became quiet again.

I almost felt sorry for her.

Almost.

Because fear could explain a mistake.

It could explain a bad decision.

But it couldn't explain six years of choices.

"You lied to me for six years," my father said.

"I know.""

"You let me believe I knew everything about your life.""

"I know.""

"You let me build a family without knowing the truth.""

Denise wiped her eyes.

"I thought I could fix it.""

My father shook his head.

"Fix what?""

She looked at me.

And that was when I realized something.

Her secret wasn't only about Ethan.

It was connected to me.

"I thought if I became the perfect wife and mother, nobody would look at my past.""

My stomach tightened.

My past.

Her past.

Everyone's past.

But why did I suddenly feel like I was involved?

My father noticed too.

"What does Maya have to do with this?""

Denise looked away.

"I didn't want her to know.""

"Know what?""

She stayed silent.

My father stood.

"Denise.""

His voice was calm.

But I knew that calm.

It was the same voice he used when he was completely done.

"Tell us.""

She took a deep breath.

"Ethan was not just a mistake from my past.""

Nobody moved.

"He had problems growing up.""

My father frowned.

"What kind of problems?""

Denise hesitated.

"Legal problems.""

The words hit the room.

Tasha immediately looked at her mother.

"Mom?""

Denise continued.

"When Ethan was eighteen, he got into trouble. Serious trouble.""

My father looked confused.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I thought you would see me differently.""

My father laughed softly.

"Denise, I married you. I loved you. I would have helped you.""

She looked at him.

"But would you have looked at me the same?""

That question stayed in the air.

Because maybe that was the truth.

Maybe Denise had spent years terrified that if people saw the imperfect parts of her life, they would stop loving her.

But instead of facing the truth...

she created a lie.

And that lie destroyed everyone around her.

"What does Ethan have to do with the money?"" my father asked.

Denise closed her eyes.

There it was.

The question she didn't want.

"The money wasn't only for him.""

"Then who else?""

She looked at me.

I felt a cold feeling move through my body.

"Denise.""

My father noticed.

"Why are you looking at Maya?""

Nobody answered.

Finally, Denise whispered:

"Because Ethan is your brother.""

The room stopped.

Not my half-brother.

Not my stepbrother.

My brother.

My brain struggled to understand.

"What?""

My father's face changed.

"What did you say?""

Denise looked terrified.

"Ethan is your brother.""

I shook my head.

"No.""

The word came out automatically.

"No, that's not possible.""

Denise looked at me.

"I was pregnant when I met your father.""

My father stared at her.

"You told me you had no children.""

"I know.""

My heart started racing.

Because suddenly everything became bigger.

This wasn't just about a hidden son.

This was about another child my father never knew existed.

Another person Denise kept away.

Another family secret.

My father slowly sat down.

"When did you know?""

Denise looked confused.

"Know what?""

"That Ethan was my son.""

Silence.

Then she whispered:

"I found out two years ago.""

My father looked like he couldn't breathe.

Two years.

She knew for two years.

And she said nothing.

"How?""

Denise looked at the floor.

"Ethan contacted me.""

"Why?""

"Because he found documents from his biological father.""

My father closed his eyes.

"And you didn't tell me.""

"No.""

"Why?""

Her answer was quiet.

"Because I thought you would choose him over us.""

I stared at her.

There it was again.

The same fear.

The same insecurity.

The same reason she used to justify everything.

She was so afraid of losing something...

that she destroyed everything herself.

My father stood.

"I have a son.""

Nobody spoke.

A tear fell from his face.

Not because he was angry.

Because he was grieving.

He had lost twenty-three years he could never get back.

Twenty-three birthdays.

Twenty-three holidays.

Twenty-three years of moments he should have been there for.

And Denise had taken that away.

I looked at my father.

And for the first time, I saw something worse than anger.

Regret.

"Where is he?"" my father asked.

Denise swallowed.

"I don't know.""

My father stared at her.

"What do you mean you don't know?""

"He stopped answering.""

"When?""

"Three months ago.""

My father looked toward the window.

Trying to process everything.

Then he asked the question that changed the entire situation.

"Did you use the money to help Ethan?""

Denise didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

Because everyone knew.

My father picked up the financial records.

"And you were going to let me believe Maya was the reason money was disappearing.""

Denise looked ashamed.

"I never wanted to hurt her.""

My father looked at her.

"But you did.""

And that was the hardest truth of all.

Because Denise's biggest lie wasn't that she hid Ethan.

It wasn't even the money.

It was that she convinced herself her intentions mattered more than the damage she caused.

That night, my father made a decision.

He was going to find Ethan.

But before he did...

he needed to uncover one final thing.

Why had Denise changed the trust agreement?

May you like

Because he was starting to believe the answer had nothing to do with money.

It had everything to do with control.
