Chapter 12: The Reason Denise Chose My Father
Ethan arrived at our house on Sunday afternoon.
He looked different.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
When he first met us, he carried years of anger.
Now, he carried something else.
Questions.
He walked into the living room holding a folder.
My father immediately stood.
"What did you find?""
Ethan looked at him.
"I found something my father left behind.""
My father's expression changed.
"Your biological father?""
Ethan nodded.
"He kept records.""
My stomach tightened.
"What kind of records?""
Ethan placed the folder on the table.
"About Denise.""
Nobody moved.
My father opened it carefully.
Inside were copies of old documents.
Letters.
Emails.
Financial records.
Things from before my father ever met Denise.
The first page was enough to change the atmosphere.
My father read it twice.
Then he looked up.
"What?""
Ethan swallowed.
"She knew about you before she met you.""
The room went silent.
"What do you mean?"" my father asked.
Ethan pointed at the document.
"My father wrote that Denise had been looking for you.""
I felt confused.
"Looking for him?""
Ethan nodded.
My father kept reading.
And the color slowly disappeared from his face.
"No.""
The word came out quietly.
"What?""
He handed the document to me.
I read the first lines.
Denise had heard about Arthur Carter years earlier.
A successful businessman.
A widower.
A man with a daughter.
And according to the records...
she intentionally approached him.
Not by accident.
Not by coincidence.
Intentionally.
My hands went cold.
"She knew who you were.""
My father didn't answer.
Because he already understood.
The woman who claimed to love him...
may have chosen him for another reason.
Ethan continued.
"My father said Denise was afraid of losing financial security.""
My father closed his eyes.
"That can't be true.""
But even he sounded unsure.
Because too many pieces fit.
The hidden money.
The trust changes.
The control.
The lies.
I watched my father struggle.
Because betrayal from someone you hate is easy to understand.
Betrayal from someone you love is different.
It makes you question your own memories.
"Why didn't you show me this before?"" my father asked Ethan.
"I just found it.""
Ethan looked down.
"I didn't want to believe it either.""
That sentence broke something in me.
Because Ethan wasn't just revealing a secret.
He was losing his mother all over again.
My father sat quietly for several minutes.
Then he stood.
"I need to talk to Denise.""
Nobody tried to stop him.
Because everyone knew.
This was the final truth.
The one that would decide everything.
When Denise entered the room and saw the documents, she froze.
She didn't ask what they were.
She already knew.
My father held up the papers.
"Did you know who I was before we met?""
Denise said nothing.
"Answer me.""
Her silence was enough.
My father looked away.
And I saw the exact moment his heart broke.
Not because she lied.
Because she confirmed his biggest fear.
Finally, Denise whispered:
"Yes.""
The room felt like it stopped.
"Why?""
Her eyes filled.
"I was desperate.""
My father laughed quietly.
A painful sound.
"So it was all planned?""
"No.""
"Then what was it?""
Denise looked at him.
"I planned to meet you.""
She paused.
"But I didn't plan to love you.""
Nobody spoke.
Then she said the sentence that shocked all of us.
"I didn't expect you to be kind.""
My father stared.
"I didn't expect you to care about Maya.""
Her voice cracked.
"I didn't expect to become attached.""
That was the complicated part.
The part nobody wanted to admit.
Maybe some feelings had been real.
Maybe some moments had been genuine.
But real feelings built on lies still cause damage.
My father walked away.
And this time...
Denise didn't chase him.
Because she finally knew there was nothing left to explain.
The truth had arrived.
And it was worse than anyone imagined.
But what none of us knew was that the documents Ethan found contained one final detail.
A detail that would reveal why Denise had been so determined to control Maya's future.
Because years earlier...
before she ever became my stepmother...
Denise had made a promise.
May you like
A promise involving my inheritance.
And she had spent six years trying to make sure that promise never came true.
