Chapter 24: The Final Secret About My Mother

Denise arrived at our house that night.

Not confidently.

Not like the woman who once controlled every conversation.

She looked frightened.

Actually frightened.

My father opened the door.

"What did Daniel threaten you with?""

Denise looked at me.

Then away.

"I don't know.""

"Denise.""

She swallowed.

"He said he has proof.""

"Proof of what?""

She hesitated.

And that hesitation told me everything.

She knew.

"You know something about my mother.""

Her eyes filled.

"I knew something.""

The room became silent.

My father stepped back.

"How long?""

"Years.""

My heart hurt.

Not again.

Another person who knew something.

Another person who stayed quiet.

"Tell us.""

Denise sat down.

"I met Daniel before I met Arthur.""

My father looked shocked.

"What?""

She nodded.

"He contacted me when I was trying to rebuild my life.""

"Why?""

"Because he knew I needed help.""

My father's expression hardened.

"And he used that.""

"Yes.""

Denise looked ashamed.

"He told me things about your family.""

I looked at her.

"What things?""

She whispered:

"Things about your mother.""

I felt cold.

"What did he say?""

Denise looked at me.

"He said your mother discovered something about Arthur's company.""

My father frowned.

"What?""

"Something illegal.""

Nobody moved.

My father immediately shook his head.

"No.""

Denise continued.

"I didn't believe him at first.""

"Then why?""

"Because he showed me documents.""

My father looked confused.

"What documents?""

"I don't know.""

The answer frustrated him.

"You don't know?""

"I was scared.""

Again.

Fear.

But this time, I understood something.

Fear explained why people made bad choices.

It didn't excuse them.

Denise continued.

"Daniel told me your mother was going to expose someone.""

"Who?""

"I don't know.""

My father looked toward the floor.

"And he convinced you to believe him?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

Her answer was painful.

"Because I was afraid that if Arthur went to prison, I would lose everything.""

I looked at her.

"So you thought controlling our family would protect you.""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

The pattern was clear.

Daniel planted fear.

Denise reacted with control.

Marcus followed her.

Everyone made choices.

Everyone caused damage.

But the beginning had been a lie.

A lie created by someone who wanted revenge.

My father asked:

"What did Daniel want you to do?""

Denise looked down.

"He wanted me to convince Arthur to change the trust.""

My heart sank.

Everything came back to the trust.

"But why?""

Denise whispered:

"Because he believed if Maya lost control of the trust, he could access your company through financial pressure.""

My father finally understood.

The trust wasn't just about money.

It was a symbol.

A symbol of my father's protection.

A symbol Daniel wanted to break.

That night, we gathered everyone.

Ethan.

Tasha.

Marcus.

For the first time, the entire family sat together with no secrets.

Marcus apologized.

Again.

But this time, nobody interrupted.

Nobody defended him.

He accepted responsibility.

Denise apologized too.

Not once.

Not dramatically.

Repeatedly.

And slowly, everyone began rebuilding.

But one question remained.

What did my mother know?

The next day, my father and I returned to the journal.

We searched every page.

Every note.

Every sentence.

And then we found something hidden.

A page folded into the back cover.

A page my mother had written but never attached.

The handwriting was shaky.

Like she had been in a hurry.

The first line said:

Arthur,

If you are reading this, then I did not get the chance to tell you everything.

My heart started racing.

The next sentence changed everything.

Daniel Reeves is not the person you should fear.

My father froze.

"What?""

We continued.

Because the next words were impossible.

Daniel believes he is controlling the situation.

But he is not.

Someone else started this long before him.

I looked at my father.

Someone else?

My mother's final words revealed one terrifying truth.

Daniel was not the beginning.

He was only another person being used.

May you like

And the person who started everything...

was someone we never suspected.
