Chapter 6: The Woman Who Finally Chose a Side
Vanessa stood with her arms slightly spread, blocking Adrian’s line of sight to Daniel.
For the first time since I had met her, I saw no calculation in her expression.
No polished smile.
No carefully chosen words.
Only fear.
“Move,” Adrian said.
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
His jaw tightened.
“You know what happens when you disobey me.””
“I know.””
“Then move.””
“I said no.””
Daniel grabbed my arm.
“Mom, get behind me.””
But I couldn't move.
I was staring at Vanessa.
At the woman I had spent months suspecting.
The woman who had lied to my son.
The woman who had betrayed my trust.
And somehow, in this moment, she was standing between him and a loaded gun.
Adrian raised the weapon another inch.
“This isn't your fight.””
Vanessa's voice trembled.
“It became my fight the day I found out what you did.””
His eyes narrowed.
“You found out too late.””
“No.””
She swallowed.
“I found out exactly when I needed to.””
I whispered, “Vanessa…”
She didn't look at me.
“Your husband was right,” she said.
Adrian laughed.
“About what?””
“About you.””
His face hardened.
“He told me you would eventually turn on everyone.””
“And you believed him?””
“I do now.””
Daniel stared at Vanessa.
“You saw my father before he died.””
“Yes.””
“You never told me.””
“I was afraid.””
“Of him?””
“Of everyone.””
Daniel's voice cracked.
“You lied to me for months.””
“I know.””
“You used me.””
“I know.””
“Then why are you protecting me now?””
Vanessa finally looked at him.
Her eyes were filled with tears.
“Because I stopped seeing you as a way into this family a long time ago.””
Daniel looked away.
“That doesn't undo what you did.””
“No.””
Her voice was quiet.
“It doesn't.””
Adrian suddenly fired.
The shot struck the wall above Vanessa's shoulder.
She screamed and ducked.
Daniel pulled me down behind the desk.
“Stay there!””
I heard footsteps.
Adrian moved toward the office.
Vanessa grabbed a heavy brass lamp and swung it at him.
He stepped back.
The lamp crashed against the doorframe.
She ran.
“Vanessa!””
Adrian raised his gun again.
Daniel lunged forward.
The two men collided.
The gun flew across the room.
I screamed.
Daniel and Adrian crashed against the desk.
The original will slid to the floor.
I crawled toward it.
Adrian saw me.
He shoved Daniel away and reached for the document.
I grabbed it first.
He seized my wrist.
His fingers were stronger than I expected.
“Give it to me.””
“No.””
“Mrs. Carter, this ends tonight.””
“You came into my home with a gun.””
“You should have stopped investigating.””
I stared into his eyes.
“How many people have you threatened?””
“Enough.””
“My husband?””
He didn't answer.
“That means yes.””
He smiled.
“Your husband made the mistake of thinking the truth mattered more than survival.””
I pulled against his grip.
“You killed him.””
“No.””
He leaned closer.
“But I made sure nobody could save him.””
Something inside me snapped.
I drove my knee into his leg.
He cursed and loosened his grip.
I ripped the document away.
Daniel tackled him from behind.
They crashed into the bookcase.
Books fell around them.
Vanessa suddenly appeared in the doorway carrying the emergency fire extinguisher.
She swung it with both hands.
It struck Adrian across the shoulder.
He dropped to one knee.
“Run!”” she shouted.
Daniel grabbed my hand.
We raced into the hallway.
Harold was waiting at the staircase.
“Mrs. Carter!””
“Get everyone out of the house!””
“Where's Richard?””
“He's safe.””
That was a lie.
I didn't know whether Richard was alive.
But there was no time to explain.
Harold guided us toward the rear entrance.
Then we heard another gunshot upstairs.
Daniel stopped.
“Mom.””
“Keep moving.””
“But Vanessa is still in there.””
I turned.
He was already going back.
I grabbed his sleeve.
“No.””
“She saved me.””
“And now we need to save her.””
He looked at me.
That sentence changed something between us.
We ran upstairs together.
The office was empty.
A window stood open.
The curtain whipped in the wind.
Adrian was gone.
Vanessa was sitting against the desk, holding her arm.
Blood was running between her fingers.
“Vanessa!””
Daniel dropped beside her.
“Are you okay?””
She looked up.
“I've had better nights.””
He carefully moved her hand.
A bullet had grazed her upper arm.
“She needs a doctor.””
“I know,” I said.
Vanessa looked at me.
“Did you get the will?””
I held it up.
“Yes.””
She closed her eyes in relief.
“Good.””
Daniel stared at her.
“You could have been killed.””
She gave him a tired smile.
“So could you.””
He didn't answer.
I knelt beside her.
“Where's Adrian?””
“He ran through the balcony.””
I looked outside.
The grounds were dark.
“No one leaves this property.””
Harold's voice came from behind me.
“The gates are locked.””
“Good.””
Then we heard a vehicle engine.
Daniel stood.
“He can't be leaving.””
We ran to the front windows.
A black SUV was speeding down the private drive.
Harold looked stunned.
“The gate was locked.””
“Then someone opened it.””
We all looked at Vanessa.
She shook her head.
“Not me.””
“Who then?””
Nobody answered.
Daniel suddenly looked toward the security monitor.
“Mom.””
We turned.
The security system had come back online.
Camera footage showed the front gate opening from inside.
A man stood beside the control panel.
Not Adrian.
Not Vanessa.
Not Harold.
My heart stopped.
I knew him.
One of our foundation attorneys.
Martin Hale.
Vanessa saw the screen.
Her face went white.
“No.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What?””
“That man…”
She whispered the name.
“Martin.””
I stared at the screen.
My accountant had spent months helping me track the stolen money.
He had warned me not to confront anyone.
He had known about the secret account.
He had known about Redwood Advisory.
And now he was opening the gate for Adrian.
Daniel looked at me.
“Your accountant?””
I couldn't speak.
Harold said quietly, “Should I call the police now?””
“Yes.””
This time, I didn't hesitate.
“Immediately.””
Vanessa stood, wincing from the pain in her arm.
“I have to leave.””
Daniel blocked her.
“No.””
She looked at him.
“Adrian won't stop.””
“Neither will the police.””
“You don't understand.””
“What don't I understand?””
“He's not afraid of prison.””
Daniel stared.
“Why?””
“Because he knows things about people.””
She looked at me.
“Things that could destroy them.””
I held the will against my chest.
“Then let him try.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“You don't know what he has.””
“I know enough.””
“No, you don't.””
She moved toward me.
“Your husband had another reason for creating that second will.””
“What reason?””
“He knew someone would eventually come after the foundation.””
“Who?””
“A group.””
“What group?””
“The people who control the property deals.””
I frowned.
“Investors?””
“Not exactly.””
She looked at Daniel.
“They buy distressed companies. They force them into debt. Then they strip their assets.””
Daniel asked, “And the foundation?””
“Your foundation owns land they want.””
I looked at the will.
That explained the property documents.
The fake consulting payments.
The historical asset records.
Someone wasn't just stealing money.
Someone was preparing to take control of the foundation's assets.
“What does Adrian gain?””
Vanessa answered immediately.
“Access.””
“To what?””
“The Carter land.””
I felt sick.
“How?””
“He has already prepared the paperwork.””
She took a breath.
“The missing files from your office contained property valuations and trust documents. With those, he can create fraudulent claims that several parcels were transferred to another company.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Can he do that?””
“Not legally.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Legality isn't the point. Once the paperwork is filed, you'll spend years proving it was forged.””
I thought of the suspicious consulting invoices.
Money had been siphoned from the foundation to finance a larger operation.
And our family had nearly walked into it.
“Why three weeks?”” Daniel asked.
Vanessa looked at him.
“Because they planned to use your wedding.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“The marriage announcement would trigger a series of legal changes.””
Daniel frowned.
“Which ones?””
“Your father's old trust agreement.””
I opened the will again.
There it was.
A clause I had never understood.
If Daniel married before the internal investigation closed, his new spouse would be excluded from the family assets.
But if the marriage occurred under a fraudulent transfer claim, control could become tied up in litigation.
Vanessa whispered, “They wanted you to marry quickly.””
Daniel's face hardened.
“You were pushing the date.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Adrian told me the documents had to be activated before the wedding.””
“Activated?””
She nodded.
“The trust.””
I looked at her.
“You were planning to marry my son and then help Adrian seize the foundation.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
Daniel stepped away.
The room went silent.
I watched the pain cross his face.
He had loved her.
That was the part none of the evidence could erase.
She had lied to him.
But she had also stood between him and a bullet.
Human beings were rarely as simple as villains and heroes.
Vanessa looked at him.
“I know you hate me.””
“I don't hate you.””
Her eyes lifted.
“I should.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“I don't know what I feel.””
“That is fair.””
“You should have told me.””
“I was scared.””
“You've been using fear as an excuse for everything.””
She lowered her head.
“You're right.””
I looked at her injured arm.
“Then tell us everything now.””
She lifted her eyes.
“I will.””
She took a breath.
“My father didn't disappear.””
I stared.
“What?””
“Adrian killed him.””
Richard had said the same thing.
But Vanessa continued.
“My father recorded a confession before he died.””
“Where is it?””
“Adrian has the original.””
“And the copy?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“My father gave it to your husband.””
I felt my pulse quicken.
“Where?””
“I don't know.””
“You must know something.””
She shook her head.
“Only that your husband hid it somewhere Adrian could never search.””
Daniel looked at the will.
“Maybe it's connected to this.””
“It is.””
“How do you know?””
“Because my father told me.””
She paused.
“He said your husband gave him one final instruction.””
“What instruction?””
Vanessa whispered:
“If anything happens to me, give Evelyn the truth.””
My eyes filled with tears.
For fifteen years, I had believed my husband died carrying the truth alone.
Perhaps he hadn't.
Perhaps he had spent his last days building a path toward the moment when we would finally uncover it.
A police siren sounded in the distance.
Then another.
Harold looked through the window.
“They're here.””
Vanessa suddenly grabbed my hand.
“Mrs. Carter.””
It was the first time she had called me that without hostility.
“There's one more thing.””
“What?””
She looked toward Daniel.
“Adrian wasn't acting alone.””
I frowned.
“Who else?””
She hesitated.
“The person who gave him access to your office.””
I already knew the answer.
“Martin.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
She looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“Martin was working for someone else.””
“Who?””
Before she could answer, we heard footsteps racing up the stairs.
Harold appeared.
“Mrs. Carter, there's been an accident.””
“What happened?””
“Richard Bell.””
My heart stopped.
“Where is he?””
“He was found near the greenhouse.””
“Is he alive?””
Harold swallowed.
“Barely.””
Daniel turned toward Vanessa.
“What else were you going to tell my mother?””
She opened her mouth.
Then her phone rang.
Everyone froze.
Unknown number.
Vanessa stared at the screen.
I whispered, “Answer it.””
She did.
Nobody spoke.
Then a man's voice came through the speaker.
Calm.
Almost gentle.
“Vanessa, you have exactly five minutes to bring me the original will.””
She looked at me.
The voice continued.
“After that, Daniel dies.””
Then the call ended.
Daniel stood completely still.
I tightened my grip on the will.
And somewhere downstairs, the front door slammed open.
The police had arrived.
But when I looked at Vanessa, I realized the message had accomplished exactly what its sender wanted.
We had stopped trusting everyone.
May you like
And now we didn't know whether the greatest danger was standing outside the house…
or already standing inside it.
