Chapter 3: The Secret My Husband Took to His Grave

Daniel kept staring at the message on Vanessa’s phone.

“So what exactly is my mother hiding?””

Vanessa said nothing.

That silence did more damage than any accusation could have.

I reached for the phone.

“Give me that.””

Vanessa pulled it back.

“You should probably read it yourself.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Mom?””

I looked at him.

There are moments when a mother has to decide whether protecting her child means telling him the truth or protecting him from it a little longer.

I had made that decision twenty-two years ago.

I had regretted it ever since.

And now Vanessa was forcing the secret back into the light.

“Daniel,” I said quietly, “your father had enemies.””

He frowned.

“Everybody has enemies.””

“Not like this.””

Vanessa leaned against the doorframe.

She was watching me carefully.

Too carefully.

That was when I understood.

She hadn't sent the message.

Someone had sent it to her.

Or perhaps she wanted us to believe that.

Either way, somebody knew exactly which secret would frighten me.

Daniel crossed his arms.

“What did Dad do?””

“Nothing that deserved what happened to him.””

The room went silent.

His father had been gone for almost fifteen years.

Daniel had been twenty-one when he died.

We had called it a heart attack.

That was the version printed in the newspaper.

The version I gave my son.

The version I had repeated at the funeral.

But it wasn't the whole truth.

“Mom,” Daniel said, “you're scaring me.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She was trying very hard not to smile.

“Leave us,” I told her.

She didn't move.

“I'm staying.””

“This concerns my family.””

“And I'm marrying into it.””

I stared at her.

“You may not be.””

Daniel flinched.

“Mom.””

Vanessa immediately looked wounded.

“There it is.””

“What?””

“She never wanted me here.””

I didn't answer.

Instead, I took the phone from her hand before she could pull it away again.

The screen was still open.

The message had come from an unknown number.

I showed it to Daniel.

“I don't know who sent this.””

“Can we trace it?””

“Martin may be able to.””

Daniel looked toward Vanessa.

“Did you get any other messages?””

She hesitated.

“No.””

“Show me.””

“I deleted them.””

“Why?””

“Because they were private.””

I watched her face.

There was fear now, but it seemed carefully measured.

Not the fear of someone who had been threatened.

The fear of someone trying to decide how much information to reveal.

I handed the phone back.

“I want you both downstairs.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Why?””

“Because we're going to have dinner.””

Vanessa stared at me.

“Dinner?””

“Yes.””

“At a time like this?””

“Especially at a time like this.””

Daniel gave me a strange look.

But he followed.

Sometimes the smartest way to catch a liar is to make them believe they have regained control.

At seven-thirty, we sat at the long dining table.

The staff had already left for the evening.

Only Harold remained in the kitchen, waiting for my signal.

Dinner arrived quietly.

Soup.

Roast chicken.

Potatoes.

The normal things families ate when everything was supposed to be normal.

Vanessa barely touched her plate.

Daniel kept looking at me.

Finally, he said, “Tell me about Dad.””

I put down my fork.

“What do you want to know?””

“The truth.””

Vanessa looked up.

I met her eyes.

“The public story is that your father had a heart attack.””

Daniel nodded.

“I know.””

“He did.””

“But?””

“There was a second part.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Your father had been investigating someone.””

“Who?””

“A man named Richard Bell.””

Daniel frowned.

“Who was he?””

“An investment consultant.””

Vanessa suddenly stopped moving.

It lasted only half a second.

But I saw it.

“So you know that name,” I said.

She slowly looked at me.

“No.””

Daniel turned toward her.

“Why did you react like that?””

“I didn't.””

“You did.””

She pushed her chair back.

“This is ridiculous.””

I remained seated.

“Richard Bell worked with several foundations in South Carolina.””

Daniel frowned.

“Why would Dad investigate him?””

“Because money was disappearing.””

Daniel's face went still.

“From the foundation?””

“Yes.””

The fork in Vanessa’s hand slipped.

It struck her plate.

I continued.

“Your father discovered several shell companies receiving payments from charitable organizations.””

Daniel swallowed.

“And he confronted them?””

“He intended to.””

“What happened?””

“He received a phone call the night before he died.””

“From Richard Bell?””

“I don't know.””

“You don't know?””

“I was asleep when he got up.””

Daniel stared at me.

“What happened then?””

“He told me someone was threatening him.””

My son's eyes widened.

“You never told me that.””

“I know.””

“Why?””

“Because you were twenty-one.””

“That doesn't answer the question.””

“No,” I said.

“It doesn't.””

He pushed his chair away from the table.

“So all these years, you let me believe Dad just died?””

“I let you believe the part that was safe.””

“Safe for who?””

I looked down.

“For you.””

Daniel stood.

“You don't get to decide what I can handle.””

I absorbed the anger in his voice.

He had every right.

“You're right.””

Vanessa watched us from the other side of the table.

Then she said quietly, “There is more, isn't there?””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“You're not telling him everything.””

My eyes narrowed.

“How would you know?””

She gave a small smile.

“Because you don't look like a woman remembering a dead husband.””

Daniel turned toward her.

“What does that mean?””

“It means she looks guilty.””

I stood so quickly my chair scraped the floor.

“You should be very careful.””

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

Daniel stepped between us.

“Stop.””

I looked at my son.

He was caught between us now.

Exactly where someone wanted him.

I sat down again.

“Your father discovered that someone had been transferring foundation assets through private accounts.””

Daniel whispered, “Like what's happening now.””

“Yes.””

“And what happened after he found out?””

“He was supposed to meet a federal investigator.””

“Did he?””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because he died the night before.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he asked the question I had dreaded for fifteen years.

“Was he murdered?””

I looked directly at him.

“I don't know.””

Vanessa laughed softly.

Daniel turned on her.

“What?””

“I'm sorry,” she said.

“It's just convenient.””

“What is?””

“That after all these years, your mother suddenly has a secret murder mystery when she's accusing me of stealing money.””

I stared at her.

“You think this is convenient?””

“I think everyone has secrets.””

“That part is true.””

She leaned back.

“Maybe yours are finally catching up with you.””

I wanted to demand answers.

Instead, I asked a different question.

“Who is Adrian Blake?””

Her face went blank.

Daniel looked at her.

“Mom already asked you that.””

“And I already answered.””

“No,” I said.

“You didn't.””

Vanessa stood.

“I don't know him.””

“Then why did he send you money?””

Daniel's head snapped toward her.

“What?””

I had been waiting for that reaction.

I opened my phone and displayed the banking records Martin had sent.

“Three payments,” I said.

“Twenty thousand each.””

Vanessa stared at the screen.

Daniel took the phone.

“Vanessa?””

Her lips parted.

“I can explain.””

“Please do.””

“He owed me.””

“For what?””

She looked at him.

“I don't know.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“You don't know why a man you've supposedly never met sent you sixty thousand dollars?””

She began shaking her head.

“You're twisting this.””

I remained calm.

“The payments were transferred from the same company that received nearly half a million dollars from the foundation.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Are you sure?””

“Martin traced them.””

Vanessa's face was pale.

Then she did something unexpected.

She smiled.

“Fine.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Fine?””

“I know Adrian.””

The room went silent.

“I never said I didn't know him.””

“You just did,” I said.

“I said I didn't know him like that.””

“Like what?””

She ignored me.

“Adrian was involved in a business deal with my family years ago.””

Daniel frowned.

“What business?””

“Real estate.””

“What happened?””

“My father lost money.””

“And Adrian helped?””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“Your husband did.””

My chest tightened.

“What are you talking about?””

Vanessa folded her arms.

“Your husband bought a property my father wanted.””

“That isn't a crime.””

“No.””

Her smile returned.

“But it ruined my father.””

Daniel looked between us.

“Why are we just hearing this?””

“Because it wasn't important.””

I shook my head.

“You knew my husband's name before you met me.””

Vanessa didn't answer.

“How?””

“Small social circles.””

“No.””

I stepped toward her.

“You knew exactly who I was.””

She stared at me.

“And you pursued my son anyway.””

Daniel looked stunned.

“Vanessa?””

She quickly turned toward him.

“Daniel, this is not what you think.””

“Then tell me what it is.””

She grabbed his hand.

“Your father destroyed mine financially.””

Daniel pulled his hand away.

“Did you come into my life because of that?””

“No.””

“Then why did you know all of this?””

“I did research.””

“Before meeting me?””

She hesitated.

“That isn't unusual.””

I felt something cold settle in my stomach.

This had never been a coincidence.

Vanessa had entered our family knowing more than she admitted.

The wedding.

The estate.

The foundation.

My husband's history.

Perhaps even Daniel himself.

I looked at her.

“When did you first meet Adrian Blake?””

She didn't answer.

“Vanessa.””

“Three years ago.””

Daniel stared.

“Three years?””

“We weren't together then.””

“Who introduced you?””

She looked toward the window.

“No one.””

“That isn't possible,” I said.

She snapped her eyes toward me.

“You don't know everything.””

“No,” I said.

“But I'm learning.””

Harold appeared in the doorway.

“Mrs. Carter?””

I nodded.

“What is it?””

“There's been an issue with the security system.””

Daniel frowned.

“What kind of issue?””

“The east camera was disconnected at 6:14 this evening.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Harold looked at Vanessa.

“I'm not sure how it happened.””

I already knew.

“Who has access to the security panel?””

“Three people.””

“Me. Daniel. And?””

Harold hesitated.

“Miss Vanessa.””

Daniel looked at her.

Vanessa stepped back.

“I didn't touch it.””

I walked toward Harold.

“Can we recover the footage?””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“Do it.””

He left.

Vanessa suddenly grabbed her purse.

“I need to go upstairs.””

I stepped in front of her.

“No.””

She glared at me.

“Move.””

“No.””

“I'm not your prisoner.””

“Then you'll have no problem staying right here.””

Daniel looked frustrated.

“Mom, what's happening?””

I lowered my voice.

“Something is happening in this house tonight, and I'm done pretending it isn't.””

Vanessa's phone buzzed.

She looked down.

The color vanished from her face.

I reached for it.

She quickly pulled it away.

Daniel saw the screen.

“What was that?””

“Nothing.””

“Let me see.””

“No.””

He stepped closer.

“Vanessa.””

She backed away.

Then her purse slipped from her shoulder.

Everything inside spilled onto the floor.

Lipstick.

Keys.

Wallet.

Perfume.

A small black flash drive.

It landed beside my chair.

I bent down.

Vanessa lunged for it.

Too late.

I picked it up.

“What is this?””

“Give it back.””

“Why?””

“Because it's mine.””

“That isn't an explanation.””

Daniel looked at the drive.

“What's on it?””

Vanessa's breathing became rapid.

“Nothing.””

I looked at her.

“You're lying.””

She suddenly screamed.

“You don't know anything about me!””

The entire room froze.

Her composure was gone.

Completely.

She pointed at me.

“You think you're so smart because you own this house?””

“This house isn't the issue.””

“You've been spying on me!””

“I've been protecting my family.””

“You've been humiliating me!””

“You threw a bucket of dirty water on me this morning.””

Daniel looked at her.

She said nothing.

I held up the flash drive.

“Now tell me why you have this.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

Then she whispered something so quietly that I almost didn't hear it.

“Because Adrian told me to take it.””

Daniel stopped breathing.

I looked at her.

“Take what?””

She didn't answer.

I stepped toward her.

“What's on the drive?””

Her lips trembled.

“I don't know.””

“Then why did you take it?””

“Because he said I had to.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Who is Adrian Blake?””

Before Vanessa could answer, every light in the estate went out.

The house plunged into darkness.

A second later, the security alarm began screaming.

Harold shouted from the hallway.

“Mrs. Carter!””

I heard footsteps running upstairs.

Then another sound.

A door slamming.

I grabbed Daniel's arm.

“Don't move.””

But Vanessa was already gone.

She had vanished into the darkness.

And when the emergency lights flickered back on, the office door upstairs stood open.

The same office where confidential documents had disappeared.

The same office where my husband's old files were stored.

And the same office where someone had just broken in.

I ran.

Daniel followed.

When we reached the doorway, I stopped dead.

The desk drawers had been ripped open.

Files were scattered everywhere.

The safe door was open.

And on the floor, beneath the framed photograph of my husband, someone had left a single white envelope.

My name was written across it.

*EVELYN.*

My hands shook as I picked it up.

Inside was one photograph.

I looked at it.

Then my knees almost gave way.

It was a picture of my husband taken the night he died.

Standing beside him was a man I had not seen in fifteen years.

Richard Bell.

And in the corner of the photograph, half-hidden in the shadows, was someone else.

A much younger Vanessa.

Daniel came up behind me.

“Mom?””

I couldn't speak.

He took the photograph from my hand.

His face drained of color.

“Why was Vanessa there?””

I finally looked at my son.

“I don't know.””

But deep down, I knew one thing.

The woman Daniel planned to marry had not entered our family by accident.

May you like

She had been walking toward us for years.

And now I had three weeks to discover why.
