Chapter 5: The Gun, the Lie, and the Name in My Husband’s Will

For one terrible second, nobody moved.

Rain hammered against the carriage house roof.

Water dripped from Vanessa’s coat onto the old stone floor.

And in her right hand was a gun.

Not pointed at me.

Not pointed at Daniel.

Pointed directly at Richard Bell.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Vanessa, put the gun down.””

She shook her head.

“Don't come any closer.””

Her voice was trembling, but the gun in her hand wasn't.

Richard stared at her.

“You shouldn't have come here.””

She laughed bitterly.

“You knew I had no choice.””

I looked from Vanessa to Richard.

“No choice?””

Vanessa's eyes met mine.

“You don't understand what happened.””

“Then explain it.””

She swallowed.

“You would never have listened.””

“You stole from my foundation.””

“I didn't steal anything.””

“You entered my office.””

“I was looking for evidence.””

“You photographed confidential documents.””

“Because I was trying to find out the truth.””

“You took a flash drive.””

“Because Adrian ordered me to.””

I stared at her.

“And now you're holding a gun.””

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

“I'm not going to hurt anyone.””

Richard gave a humorless laugh.

“That is exactly what you said fifteen years ago.””

Daniel looked at him.

“What happened fifteen years ago?””

Richard's eyes remained on Vanessa.

“She knows.””

Vanessa's hands tightened around the weapon.

“Stop talking.””

“No.””

“Richard.””

“You've been running from this for years.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Running from what?””

She closed her eyes.

For the first time, she looked less like the polished woman who had walked into our home months earlier and more like someone who had been carrying a secret too heavy for her.

Then Richard said something that changed everything.

“Your father wasn't killed because of the foundation.””

Daniel went rigid.

“Then why?””

“Because of you.””

My heart stopped.

Richard continued.

“Your father discovered someone was planning to use you as leverage.””

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

“He found evidence that a group of investors was using fraudulent property transfers to take control of several charitable holdings.””

Richard looked at me.

“Your husband discovered the scheme.””

“And?””

“He refused to cooperate.””

Daniel's voice was low.

“So they threatened me.””

“Yes.””

“Did Dad know who was behind it?””

Richard looked at Vanessa.

“Yes.””

Daniel turned toward her.

“Why are you looking at her?””

Vanessa whispered, “Because my father was involved.””

The words landed like a gunshot.

Daniel stared at her.

“Your father?””

She nodded.

“My father worked with Richard Bell.””

Richard corrected her.

“Your father worked against me.””

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“You always say that.””

“Because it's true.””

I stepped forward.

“Vanessa, what was your father's name?””

She hesitated.

“Thomas Hale.””

The name struck me like lightning.

I remembered it.

Thomas Hale.

A real estate developer who had attended several charity events with my husband.

A man my husband had once described as charming.

A man who disappeared from the public eye shortly before my husband's death.

I looked at Daniel.

“Your father knew him.””

“And you never told me?””

“I didn't know Vanessa was his daughter.””

“She knew who I was.””

“Yes.””

“She knew everything.””

Vanessa looked away.

Daniel's voice cracked.

“How long have you known who I am?””

“Since before we met.””

He stared at her.

“How much before?””

“About three years.””

“You researched me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Vanessa lowered the gun slightly.

“Because Adrian told me to.””

Richard interrupted.

“Don't blame everything on Adrian.””

She turned on him.

“You don't know what he did.””

“I know exactly what he did.””

Richard's expression changed.

“He killed your father.””

Silence.

Vanessa froze.

“What?””

Daniel looked stunned.

Richard repeated it.

“Adrian Blake had Thomas Hale killed.””

Vanessa's face drained of color.

“No.””

“I have proof.””

“You're lying.””

“I watched the man who arranged the payment.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Adrian told me my father abandoned us.””

“Your father didn't abandon you.””

“Then where was he?””

“Running.””

“From who?””

“From Adrian.””

I felt dizzy.

Too many names.

Too many secrets.

Too many pieces of a puzzle that had been buried for years.

I turned to Richard.

“How are you alive?””

He looked at me.

“Because your husband saved me.””

I couldn't breathe.

Richard continued.

“When the threats began, Daniel's father realized the people behind the scheme were willing to eliminate anyone who stood in their way. He arranged for me to disappear.””

“You disappeared for fifteen years?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't you contact me?””

“Because your husband ordered me not to.””

My chest tightened.

“He told me if I contacted you, you'd become a target.””

Daniel whispered, “Dad knew he was going to die.””

Richard looked at him.

“He knew he might.””

“Did he know who would kill him?””

Richard hesitated.

“I suspected he did.””

“Who?””

“I never learned the name.””

Daniel's expression hardened.

“You keep saying people did things, but nobody ever says who.””

Richard looked toward me.

“Because every time we got close to the truth, someone inside your family moved the evidence.””

I immediately thought of the missing file.

“Who inside my family?””

Richard said nothing.

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“Me.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What?””

“I moved the evidence.””

She lowered the gun.

“I was the one who took the file from the office.””

My heart sank.

“Why?””

“Because Adrian told me to.””

“You knew where it was?””

“I was told exactly what to look for.””

“How?””

“My father kept records.””

“Records of what?””

“Your husband.””

Daniel stared.

“You've been keeping files on my family?””

Vanessa looked ashamed.

“My father kept them. After he disappeared, Adrian got control of them.””

I stepped closer.

“Why marry my son?””

She looked directly at Daniel.

“At first, I was supposed to get close to him.””

Daniel flinched.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I was supposed to learn where your father had hidden the original documents.””

My son's face went completely still.

“And then?””

“I fell in love with you.””

He laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“That's your explanation?””

“Yes.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I don't care what you believe.””

“Then why are you crying?””

She touched her face.

Only then did she realize tears were running down her cheeks.

“I didn't plan for this.””

“Did you plan the wedding?””

“No.””

“Did you plan to steal from Mom?””

“No.””

“Did you plan to photograph those documents?””

“Yes.””

He stared at her.

“And you still expect me to believe you loved me?””

Vanessa whispered, “I did.””

I watched my son absorb the answer.

Then Richard spoke.

“She's telling you only part of it.””

Vanessa turned.

“Shut up.””

“You have to tell him.””

“No.””

“You know what Adrian will do if he discovers the truth.””

Her eyes filled with terror.

Richard looked at Daniel.

“Your father hid something worth far more than the money stolen from your mother's foundation.””

I asked, “What?””

“The original beneficiary agreement.””

I frowned.

“What agreement?””

“The one that determines who legally controls the Carter family's charitable assets.””

My heart stopped.

“My husband never told me about such a document.””

“He didn't trust anyone with it.””

“Where is it?””

Richard looked at Daniel.

“Inside your father's estate plan.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Mom has Dad's will.””

I nodded.

“It's in the library safe.””

Richard smiled faintly.

“Not the will you think.””

I felt a chill.

“What are you saying?””

“Your husband created two versions.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Why would he do that?””

“To protect the real one.””

I remembered the old estate planning meeting.

Fifteen years ago.

My husband had insisted that his attorney prepare a second sealed document.

At the time, I thought it was standard.

Now I wasn't so sure.

“Where is the real will?”” I asked.

Richard pointed toward the flash drive.

“On there.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“You stole it?””

She shook her head.

“I copied it.””

“Where is the original?””

“Still in the office.””

I turned toward Daniel.

“We need to go back.””

Richard suddenly raised a hand.

“No.””

I stopped.

“What?””

“You're not safe in the office.””

“Why?””

“Because someone else is already there.””

Daniel looked toward the carriage house entrance.

“Who?””

Richard's face became grim.

“Adrian.””

A gunshot exploded.

The sound was deafening.

The wooden beam beside Richard splintered.

Daniel grabbed me and pulled me behind the workbench.

Harold shouted.

Vanessa dropped behind a stack of crates.

Another shot shattered a window.

“Stay down!”” Richard yelled.

I pressed my hand over my mouth.

Daniel's body was between mine and the doorway.

“Mom, are you hurt?””

“No.””

“Stay here.””

“Daniel—”

“Don't move.””

Another shot rang out.

Then silence.

Richard crawled toward the side wall.

He whispered something to Vanessa.

She nodded.

A moment later, she looked toward me.

“There's a back exit.””

I stared at her.

“You knew that?””

“This was my father's old property.””

I didn't ask how she knew.

We moved through the rear storage area.

Rain poured through the open doorway.

Harold remained behind with Richard.

Daniel grabbed my hand.

We ran.

The emergency lighting from the estate cast long shadows across the lawn.

Then Daniel stopped.

“Where's Vanessa?””

I turned.

She wasn't behind us.

“Vanessa!””

No answer.

My heart sank.

“She went back.””

“For what?””

I didn't know.

Then I saw movement at the upstairs window of the estate.

A silhouette.

Vanessa.

She was heading toward my office.

Daniel ran toward the house.

I followed.

Inside, the halls were dark.

The alarm had stopped.

Too quiet.

We climbed the stairs.

The office door was open.

Vanessa stood beside the safe.

She held something in her hand.

A document.

When she saw us, she froze.

Daniel's voice was cold.

“Put it down.””

She turned.

“This isn't what you think.””

“You keep saying that.””

“I found the original will.””

I stepped forward.

“Give it to me.””

She hesitated.

Then she handed it over.

I opened the document.

The first pages were familiar.

Property.

Trusts.

Inheritance.

Then I reached the final section.

My husband's handwriting appeared beneath the attorney's signature.

I read the first sentence.

My hands began shaking.

Daniel saw my face.

“What is it?””

I couldn't answer.

He took the document.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then he looked at me.

“Mom…”

I whispered, “Keep reading.””

His face changed with every line.

The document stated that if I were incapacitated, deceased, or unable to administer the foundation, control would temporarily transfer to Daniel.

That part was expected.

But the next clause was not.

If Daniel married before the foundation's internal investigation was completed, his spouse would have no authority over any family assets.

Vanessa's expression collapsed.

Then Daniel read the final paragraph.

His father's handwriting was unmistakable.

*If my son marries Vanessa Hale, the inheritance trust is to remain sealed indefinitely.*

Daniel looked up.

“Dad knew her name.””

I nodded.

Vanessa took a step backward.

“He knew.””

Her voice was barely audible.

“What?””

“He knew who I was.””

I looked at her.

“How?””

She swallowed.

“Because he met me.””

Daniel stared.

“When?””

“The week before he died.””

Everything inside me went still.

“You were here?””

She nodded.

“I came to ask him about my father.””

“What did he say?””

“He told me Thomas was trying to use me.””

“And?””

“He gave me a warning.””

“What warning?””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“He told me never to trust Adrian Blake.””

I looked at the document.

Then at her.

“Yet you did.””

She shook her head.

“I thought he was the only person who could help me find my father.””

“And you believed him when he told you your father abandoned you.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I was young.””

I stared at her.

“You're asking me to believe that for years you helped the man who destroyed your family.””

“I didn't know.””

“Until now?””

She nodded.

Daniel looked down at the will.

“Then why did you still come after my family?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Because Adrian had something on me.””

“What?””

She whispered four words.

“My father's confession.””

I froze.

“What confession?””

Vanessa looked toward the locked desk drawer.

“He admitted he helped arrange your father's death.””

Nobody spoke.

Then a slow knock came from the office door.

Three deliberate knocks.

We all turned.

The door opened.

A man stood in the hallway.

Adrian Blake.

He looked older than the photographs.

Calm.

Dry.

Almost amused.

His eyes settled on Vanessa.

“You've disappointed me.””

Vanessa backed away.

Daniel stepped in front of her.

Adrian smiled.

“Daniel Carter.””

He said my son's name like they had met before.

I felt the fear rise in my chest.

Adrian looked at the will in Daniel's hands.

“Your father should never have written that.””

Daniel tightened his grip.

“What do you want?””

Adrian's smile disappeared.

“The original document.””

“No.””

“Then I'll take it from you.””

He raised a gun.

May you like

And before I could react, Vanessa stepped directly between Adrian and my son.

“Then you'll have to shoot me first.””
