Chapter 9: The Family Meeting That Changed Everything
The announcement was scheduled for Friday morning.
My father planned to appear in front of cameras.
Beside him.
Victoria.
Olivia.
And apparently me.
Except I had never agreed.
I learned about the event from a reporter who called asking for a statement.
“Ms. Hayes, are you excited to join your father’s company leadership team?””
I froze.
“What?””
The reporter sounded confused.
“The announcement says you will be returning to Hayes Corporation.””
My blood ran cold.
“I never agreed to that.””
A pause.
“Are you denying the statement?””
“Yes.””
After I ended the call, I sat silently.
Then I laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
My father was still doing the same thing.
Creating a story.
Expecting me to follow it.
But I wasn’t the same person anymore.
I arrived at the press conference before it started.
The room was filled with reporters.
My father stood on stage.
Confident.
Prepared.
Until he saw me.
His expression changed.
“Emily.””
The room turned.
Cameras immediately moved toward me.
I walked forward.
“I think we need to clarify something.””
My father stepped down from the stage.
“Not here.””
“Yes.””
I looked around.
“This is exactly where.””
The reporters became interested.
My father lowered his voice.
“Please don’t do this.””
I stared at him.
“Do what?””
“Destroy your family.””
I smiled sadly.
“No.””
I looked at the cameras.
“I’m finally telling the truth about it.””
The room became silent.
My father looked afraid.
Not angry.
Afraid.
Because he knew.
The truth was the one thing he couldn’t control.
“I was told today that I would be announced as part of Hayes Corporation leadership.””
I looked directly at the cameras.
“I want everyone to know that I never agreed to this.””
Whispers spread.
My father stepped forward.
“Emily—”
I continued.
“I also want people to know that my father has been hiding information about our family for years.””
Victoria looked terrified.
Olivia stood frozen.
The reporters immediately started asking questions.
“What information?””
“Are you referring to the trust?””
My father’s face changed.
They knew.
Everyone knew.
I looked at him.
“You spent years building a perfect image.””
I paused.
“But families aren’t built on images.””
The room was silent.
“They’re built on honesty.””
After the press conference, everything exploded.
News outlets began investigating.
The trust.
The hidden documents.
The financial decisions.
The secrets.
But the biggest surprise came from Olivia.
She released her own statement.
Not defending her father.
Not attacking me.
The truth.
She admitted that she had accepted my VIP ticket without understanding the full situation.
She admitted that she had benefited from being favored.
And she admitted something nobody expected.
“My father made both Emily and me feel like we had to compete for love that should never have been conditional.””
The public reaction changed overnight.
For the first time, people saw the real story.
Not two sisters fighting.
Two daughters hurt by the same choices.
That evening, Nathan called.
“You okay?””
I smiled.
“Surprisingly, yes.””
“You realize everyone knows now.””
“Yes.””
“Are you scared?””
I looked out my window.
The city lights were shining.
“No.””
“Why?””
Because I finally understood something.
My father could take a ticket.
He could hide documents.
He could rewrite history.
But he couldn’t erase who I was.
“I’m not scared because the truth finally belongs to me.””
Nathan was quiet.
Then he said:
“Mom would be proud.””
I closed my eyes.
That was all I needed to hear.
But I knew something else.
The story wasn’t over.
Because my father still had one final secret.
May you like
And this time…
I was going to find it before he could hide it.
