Chapter 2: The Guest Who Was Never Invited

Three days later, my father walked into the gala believing he had won.

I knew because Olivia posted about it.

A picture appeared on her social media that afternoon.

She was wearing a designer dress, standing beside my father, holding the golden VIP envelope in her hand.

The caption said:

“Dreams really do come true when the right people believe in you.””

Thousands of people liked it.

Thousands of strangers congratulated her.

And for a few minutes, I felt the old pain return.

Because everyone saw the picture.

Nobody saw the truth.

Nobody saw my father taking my opportunity.

Nobody saw me sitting alone in my apartment wondering if I should even show up.

But then my phone rang.

It was the investor’s assistant again.

“Emily, are you coming tonight?””

I looked at myself in the mirror.

I was wearing a simple black dress.

Nothing expensive.

Nothing designed to impress.

“I’m not sure if I belong there anymore.””

The woman immediately responded.

“Mr. Anderson will be disappointed if you don’t come.””

Those words surprised me.

Not because they were dramatic.

Because they were sincere.

Someone important actually wanted me there.

Not because of my father.

Not because of my last name.

Because of me.

“I’ll be there,” I said.

And for the first time in days, I smiled.

When I arrived at the venue, the building looked like something from another world.

Luxury cars lined the entrance.

Photographers waited behind barriers.

People wearing expensive clothes walked past me like they belonged there.

For a second, insecurity whispered in my mind.

Maybe my father was right.

Maybe I didn’t belong among these people.

Then I remembered every night I worked alone.

Every client who rejected me.

Every person who told me my dreams were unrealistic.

I lifted my chin.

I walked inside.

“Invitation, please.””

The security guard checked my name.

His expression changed instantly.

“Ms. Hayes?””

“Yes.””

He stepped back.

“Welcome. We’ve been expecting you.””

People nearby turned.

A few whispered.

I ignored them.

Inside the ballroom, everything was breathtaking.

Crystal lights.

Massive decorations.

Famous faces.

Business leaders.

And then I saw him.

My father.

Standing proudly beside Olivia.

She was laughing with a group of people, enjoying every second.

My father noticed me.

His smile disappeared.

For a moment, he looked confused.

Then angry.

He walked toward me.

“What are you doing here?””

I almost laughed.

Not hello.

Not I’m glad you came.

Just:

What are you doing here?

“I was invited.””

His eyes narrowed.

“That’s impossible.””

“Apparently not.””

Olivia walked over.

She looked me up and down.

“Wow. You actually came.””

Her tone was sweet.

Too sweet.

“I did.””

She smiled.

“I thought you lost your invitation.””

“I thought so too.””

My father looked uncomfortable.

“Emily, this isn’t the place for this conversation.””

“No?””

“No.””

I looked around.

At the people.

At the cameras.

At the room where everyone important was gathered.

“You’re right.””

I smiled.

“This is actually the perfect place.””

Before he could answer, a voice came from behind me.

“Emily?””

Everyone nearby turned.

A man in his sixties approached.

Silver hair.

Confident posture.

The kind of presence that made people automatically move aside.

My father immediately recognized him.

His face changed.

“Daniel Anderson.””

The famous investor.

The man who could make or destroy companies with a single decision.

He ignored everyone else.

He walked straight toward me.

Then he smiled.

“Finally.””

My father looked shocked.

Finally?

As if he had been waiting for me.

Daniel extended his hand.

“Emily Hayes. I’ve been wanting to meet you.””

I shook his hand.

“Thank you for inviting me.””

He smiled.

“Inviting you?””

He glanced toward my father.

“No. I didn’t invite you.””

Confusion crossed my face.

“What?””

Daniel looked around the room.

“I reserved this entire section because tonight, I wanted everyone here to meet the next creative director of my company.””

The room went silent.

My father froze.

Olivia stopped smiling.

I felt like the entire world had shifted.

“Creative director?”” I whispered.

Daniel nodded.

“Your designs changed how I viewed my entire brand. I don’t offer opportunities like this often.””

My father stepped forward.

“Mr. Anderson, there must be some misunderstanding. Emily is talented, but—”

Daniel interrupted.

“But what?””

My father stopped.

Daniel looked at him carefully.

“Are you about to explain my decision to me?””

Nobody spoke.

And then Daniel smiled slightly.

“Interesting.””

He turned back to me.

“Emily, before tonight ends, I think you’ll discover something important.””

“What?””

“Sometimes losing a door is the best thing that can happen.””

I looked at my father.

He looked away.

Because for the first time in my life…

he wasn’t the person standing above me.

May you like

He was the person watching me rise.

And he had no idea that this night was only beginning.
