Chapter 5: The Daughter They Tried To Replace
Three weeks passed after I discovered my mother’s trust.
Three weeks of rebuilding my life.
Three weeks of learning that freedom felt terrifying before it felt powerful.
Daniel officially announced my position at his company.
The reaction was immediate.
People who once ignored my emails suddenly wanted meetings.
People who once questioned my abilities suddenly called me “a rising talent.””
It was strange.
The same world that had overlooked me suddenly acted like they had always believed in me.
But I remembered.
I remembered who answered my call when I had nothing.
I remembered who stood beside me when my own family stepped away.
One person.
Daniel.
My relationship with my father became complicated.
He called.
I didn’t answer.
He texted.
I didn’t respond.
Not because I hated him.
Because I needed space.
For years, every conversation with him ended with me questioning myself.
I needed time to remember who I was without his voice in my head.
But Olivia was not giving me space.
She posted constantly.
Photos.
Stories.
Interviews.
And every single one had the same message:
She was the chosen daughter.
Until one day, she made a mistake.
A very public mistake.
She gave an interview about the gala.
A reporter asked:
“Olivia, what was it like receiving a VIP invitation from your family?””
She smiled.
“It was amazing. My father has always supported me.””
The reporter continued.
“Were you surprised when Mr. Anderson personally introduced Emily Hayes?””
Olivia’s smile disappeared.
Only for a second.
But cameras caught it.
“Yes, well…”
She recovered quickly.
“Emily is talented.””
A pause.
“But talent isn’t everything. Opportunities come to people who know how to use them.””
That sentence spread everywhere.
Because everyone understood what she meant.
She was saying I didn’t deserve my success.
And for the first time, people started questioning her.
Two days later, Olivia showed up at my office.
Uninvited.
My assistant looked uncomfortable.
“Emily, your stepsister is here.””
I sighed.
“Send her in.””
Olivia walked inside wearing expensive clothes and a confident expression.
But I noticed something.
She looked tired.
“You’re doing well,” she said.
“Thank you.””
She looked around.
“You really got this position.””
“Yes.””
“Must be nice.””
I studied her.
“What do you want, Olivia?””
She smiled.
“Straight to the point. I like that.””
“Answer.””
Her expression changed.
“I need your help.””
I almost laughed.
“My help?””
“Yes.””
“After everything?””
She looked annoyed.
“You’re acting like I stole your entire life.””
I stared at her.
“You took my ticket.””
“That was Dad’s decision.””
“And you accepted it.””
Silence.
That was the truth.
She had no answer.
Finally, she sat down.
“I didn’t know about the trust.””
That surprised me.
“What?””
“Dad never told me.””
For some reason, I believed her.
Because Olivia loved attention.
But she wasn’t stupid.
Even she understood the danger of hiding something that important.
“What do you want?””
She looked uncomfortable.
“I think Dad is in trouble.””
I leaned back.
“What kind of trouble?””
She hesitated.
“Financial.””
My expression changed.
“What?””
She lowered her voice.
“His company isn’t doing as well as everyone thinks.””
I remembered the article.
The expansion.
The perfect family image.
“What happened?””
“I don’t know everything.””
“But you know something.””
She looked away.
“Dad has been using family assets to cover losses.””
My heart sank.
Including the trust.
My trust.
Suddenly everything made sense.
The reason he kept control.
The reason he never told me.
He wasn’t protecting me.
He was protecting himself.
That night, I opened the documents again.
I studied every detail.
Then I found something I missed before.
A signature.
My father’s signature.
And below it:
A transaction approval.
My inheritance had been used.
Not completely.
But enough.
My hands started shaking.
He didn’t just hide my future.
He borrowed from it.
Without permission.
Without telling me.
I picked up my phone.
This time, I called him.
He answered quickly.
“Emily?””
His voice sounded hopeful.
Maybe he thought I was finally ready to forgive him.
I wasn’t.
“Did you use my mother’s trust?””
Silence.
A long silence.
Then:
“Who told you?””
My eyes closed.
That was all the answer I needed.
“You did.””
“Emily, listen—”
“No.””
“Please.””
“No.””
My voice remained calm.
“You spent years telling me I wasn’t mature enough to make decisions.””
I paused.
“But you were mature enough to spend what belonged to me?””
“Your company was part of your future too.””
“My future?””
I laughed.
“You mean your future.””
He became quiet.
Then he said something unexpected.
“I was trying to save everything.””
The anger inside me softened slightly.
Because for the first time, I heard fear in his voice.
Not arrogance.
Fear.
But fear did not erase betrayal.
“I hope you find a way to fix what you broke.””
“Emily—”
“I really do.””
I ended the call.
And for the first time, I realized something.
My father had spent years trying to replace me.
But now?
May you like
He was the one who needed me.
And I wasn’t sure I wanted to save him.
