Chapter 8: The Memory Hidden Inside a Child's Fear
Sofia didn't speak for several minutes.
She sat in Daniel's arms inside the old warehouse while rain began tapping against the broken windows.
The sound reminded her of that night.
The night she had spent years trying to forget.
Daniel held her tightly.
"It's okay.""
But Sofia shook her head.
"No.""
Her voice was tiny.
"I remember.""
Everyone became still.
Marcus looked away.
Dolores covered her mouth.
Even Renata, standing near the entrance, looked nervous.
Daniel noticed.
"Tell me.""
Sofia closed her eyes.
"I was awake.""
The words came slowly.
"Mommy and Daddy were talking.""
Daniel frowned.
"You were home?""
She nodded.
"I couldn't sleep.""
Her fingers grabbed his sleeve.
"Mommy was upset.""
"Why?""
"She said someone was lying.""
Daniel felt his chest tighten.
"Who?""
Sofia opened her eyes.
"She didn't say.""
A pause.
"Then Renata came.""
The room changed.
Daniel looked at Renata.
Renata immediately shook her head.
"No.""
But Sofia continued.
"Mommy told her to leave.""
Daniel's breathing slowed.
"What happened next?""
Sofia looked down.
"Someone was yelling.""
"Who?""
"I don't know.""
"Was it Marcus?""
She shook her head.
"No.""
Everyone looked at Marcus.
His face was full of confusion.
"Then who?""
Sofia began crying.
"I don't know his name.""
Daniel held her tighter.
"That's okay.""
"But I saw him.""
Her voice became smaller.
"He was wearing a black coat.""
Marcus went completely still.
"Black coat?""
Sofia nodded.
"Mommy was scared of him.""
Daniel looked at Marcus.
"You know who that is?""
Marcus didn't answer.
That was worse than an answer.
"Who?""
Marcus looked at Renata.
Then back at Daniel.
"The man who hired me.""
Daniel felt like the ground disappeared.
"You?""
Marcus lowered his eyes.
"I was supposed to scare your wife.""
Nobody spoke.
Daniel's anger exploded.
"You threatened her?""
"No.""
Marcus looked broken.
"I was supposed to make her stop investigating.""
"Investigating what?""
Marcus hesitated.
Then:
"Money.""
Daniel waited.
"Your company.""
The words hit harder than expected.
"My company?""
Marcus nodded.
"Someone was moving money through accounts connected to your business.""
Daniel looked at Renata.
She didn't deny it.
That was the worst part.
"You knew.""
Renata's silence answered.
Daniel stepped toward her.
"How long?""
She looked exhausted.
"You wouldn't understand.""
"I understand enough.""
"No.""
Her voice cracked.
"You don't.""
For the first time, Renata looked like someone who had been carrying fear, not power.
"I was trying to protect myself.""
"By destroying my family?""
"I didn't destroy anything.""
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"My daughter was afraid to speak.""
Renata looked at Sofia.
Something flashed across her face.
Regret.
But it disappeared quickly.
"I didn't want things to go this far.""
Marcus stepped forward.
"You always say that.""
Renata looked at him.
"You don't get to judge me.""
"No.""
Marcus shook his head.
"I don't.""
A pause.
"Your wife was the one who tried to warn me.""
Daniel turned.
"My wife?""
Marcus nodded.
"She knew I wasn't the person she needed to fear.""
The warehouse became silent.
"Then who?""
Marcus looked toward the doorway.
"The person who ordered everything.""
A phone rang.
Everyone froze.
Again.
Not Daniel's.
Renata's.
She looked at the screen.
Her face changed.
Daniel saw it.
"Who is calling?""
She didn't answer.
"Renata.""
Slowly, she turned the phone around.
The name appeared.
*Unknown Caller.*
Marcus stepped back.
"No.""
"What?""
He looked terrified.
"That's impossible.""
The phone kept ringing.
Daniel stared.
"Who is it?""
Marcus whispered:
"The man who has been cleaning up this mess.""
The call stopped.
Then a message appeared.
One sentence.
May you like
Everyone saw it.
*You should have left the box where it was.*
