Chapter 13: The Person Sofia Was Too Afraid to Name

The door opened slowly.

Not dramatically.

Not with the force of someone trying to intimidate them.

Just a quiet movement.

A simple turn of the handle.

But somehow that was worse.

Because everyone inside the warehouse understood the same thing at once.

The person standing outside did not need to break in.

They were already expected.

Daniel moved instantly.

He pulled Sofia behind him.

Marcus stepped forward.

Dolores grabbed the edge of the table.

Even Renata froze.

The figure entered.

And Daniel felt the last piece of his reality collapse.

It wasn't Victor.

It wasn't a stranger.

It wasn't someone from the shadows.

It was someone he knew.

Someone who had been in his home.

Someone who had sat at his dinner table.

Someone Sofia had trusted.

"Uncle...""

The word escaped Sofia before she could stop it.

Daniel looked at her.

Then at the person standing in the doorway.

His blood ran cold.

"Thomas.""

The man smiled sadly.

"Hello, Daniel.""

Thomas Reed.

Daniel's attorney.

His business advisor.

The man who had handled every legal matter after his wife's death.

The man who had helped Daniel organize the estate.

The man who had told him:

"We will get through this.""

Daniel stared.

"No.""

Thomas stepped inside.

"I know how this looks.""

Daniel laughed once.

A broken, angry sound.

"Do you?""

Thomas looked around.

At the box.

The computer.

The people gathered together.

"Yes.""

His eyes moved toward Sofia.

"Because I know what you found.""

Daniel felt sick.

"You knew.""

Thomas sighed.

"Yes.""

The admission was almost calm.

Too calm.

"You knew about Victor.""

"Yes.""

"You knew about Renata.""

Thomas hesitated.

"Yes.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"And you knew about my wife.""

A long silence.

Then Thomas said:

"Yes.""

The answer destroyed the last piece of patience Daniel had.

He grabbed the edge of the table.

"How?""

Thomas looked away.

"Because I helped her.""

Nobody expected that.

Even Victor looked surprised.

"You?""

Thomas nodded.

"Your wife contacted me before she died.""

Daniel stared.

"Why?""

"Because she found evidence.""

"About Victor?""

Thomas shook his head.

"About everyone.""

The room went quiet.

Daniel looked at the laptop.

The final message.

The hidden truth.

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

Thomas looked at him.

"Because she asked me not to.""

Daniel froze.

"She asked you?""

Thomas nodded.

"She believed you were being watched.""

"By who?""

Thomas looked at Victor.

Then Renata.

Then back at Daniel.

"By someone who had access to everything.""

Daniel's face hardened.

"Who?""

Thomas looked at Sofia.

The sadness in his eyes made Daniel's stomach turn.

"Your daughter saw it.""

Sofia stepped back.

"No.""

Daniel immediately turned.

"Don't.""

Thomas raised his hands.

"I'm not trying to hurt her.""

"Then stop making her remember.""

Thomas looked devastated.

"I wish I could.""

Sofia shook her head.

"No.""

Her voice became louder.

"No, I don't want to.""

Daniel knelt beside her.

"It's okay.""

But Sofia looked at Thomas.

"I know you.""

Thomas froze.

"What?""

"I know you.""

Everyone stared.

Sofia's hands trembled.

"You were there.""

Daniel felt his heart stop.

"Thomas?""

Thomas closed his eyes.

And that was when Daniel knew.

The truth was finally here.

The person Sofia had been unable to name.

The person she had been afraid to describe.

Was standing in front of them.

"What happened that night?"" Daniel whispered.

Thomas opened his eyes.

And for the first time, he looked like a man who had been carrying guilt for years.

"Your wife found out everything.""

"Everything about what?""

"The company.""

"The money.""

"The people.""

A pause.

"And me.""

Daniel stared.

"You were involved?""

Thomas nodded slowly.

"At the beginning.""

Victor laughed bitterly.

"Don't pretend you were innocent.""

Thomas looked at him.

"Neither were you.""

The two men stared at each other.

And Daniel understood.

This wasn't one betrayal.

It was an entire network of people who had used his trust as a weapon.

"Tell me the truth.""

Thomas looked at Daniel.

"I was desperate.""

Daniel said nothing.

"I made a deal.""

"With Victor?""

Thomas nodded.

"Years ago.""

Victor smiled.

"You always act like you had no choice.""

Thomas looked angry.

"I had a family.""

"So did Daniel.""

The sentence silenced him.

Thomas lowered his head.

"You're right.""

Daniel looked at Sofia.

Then back at Thomas.

"What happened the night she died?""

Thomas swallowed.

"I went there to convince her to stop.""

Daniel's face changed.

"You went to my house.""

"Yes.""

"While my daughter was there.""

Thomas looked at Sofia.

"I didn't know.""

Sofia whispered:

"You saw me.""

Thomas closed his eyes.

"I did.""

The room became silent.

"I saw you hiding.""

Daniel felt his entire body go cold.

"And you left.""

Thomas nodded.

"Yes.""

"Why?""

Because Thomas had no answer.

Finally, he whispered:

"Because I was afraid.""

Daniel stared at him.

"You left my wife there.""

Thomas's eyes filled.

"I thought Victor only wanted the evidence.""

A pause.

"I didn't know what he was going to do.""

Daniel looked at Victor.

"And you?""

Victor said nothing.

That silence was enough.

Daniel stepped toward him.

"You killed her.""

Victor's expression hardened.

"No.""

The answer surprised everyone.

"I didn't.""

Daniel stopped.

Victor looked exhausted.

"Your wife died because she tried to expose something bigger than all of us.""

He looked at Thomas.

"Something even he didn't understand.""

Thomas looked confused.

"What are you talking about?""

Victor smiled sadly.

"Ask Daniel.""

Daniel froze.

"What?""

Victor pointed toward the laptop.

"Open the last file.""

Daniel turned.

"There was another file?""

Thomas looked alarmed.

"No.""

Victor whispered:

"Yes.""

And Daniel knew.

May you like

The final truth had not been found yet.

It had been waiting.
