Chapter 5: The Blue Box Beneath the Floorboards

The blue box had been missing for two years.

But Daniel remembered exactly where it was supposed to be.

The attic.

That was where his wife stored everything she considered important.

Not valuable.

Important.

There was a difference.

Jewelry could be replaced.

Money could be earned again.

But memories were fragile.

Once someone destroyed them, they were gone forever.

Daniel climbed the attic stairs with Sofia holding his hand.

Dolores followed behind them.

She didn't ask permission.

She didn't apologize.

For the first time in years, she acted like someone who understood she had a responsibility.

The attic door creaked open.

Dust filled the air.

Old furniture sat beneath white sheets.

Boxes were stacked along the walls.

Sofia looked around.

"Mommy used to come here.""

Daniel looked at her.

"You remember?""

She nodded.

"She said this was where she kept things nobody else needed to see.""

Nobody else.

The words stayed with him.

Daniel walked toward the corner where his wife kept her belongings.

Nothing.

The shelf was empty.

Too empty.

Someone had already searched.

Dolores noticed too.

"Someone has been here.""

Daniel turned.

"You're sure?""

She nodded.

"I clean this house every week. That shelf wasn't like this.""

Sofia stepped closer.

"Renata came here.""

Daniel looked down.

"When?""

"After Daddy left for work.""

A cold feeling moved through him.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Sofia looked ashamed.

"She told me you would be angry.""

Daniel immediately knelt.

"Sweetheart.""

His voice broke.

"I would never be angry at you for telling me the truth.""

"But she said...""

"I know.""

He placed his hands gently on her shoulders.

"And I'm sorry she made you believe that.""

A noise interrupted them.

A small sound.

Like something shifting behind the wall.

Dolores turned.

"Did you hear that?""

Daniel walked toward the old wooden panels.

One section looked different.

A small gap.

He pressed against it.

Nothing happened.

Then he remembered something.

A habit his wife had.

Whenever she hid something, she never used obvious places.

She used places people ignored.

The loose floorboard.

The false drawer.

The forgotten corner.

He looked down.

One floorboard was slightly raised.

Daniel removed it.

Underneath was a small space.

Empty.

Except for a piece of blue fabric.

Sofia gasped.

"Mommy's box.""

Daniel pulled it out carefully.

The blue paint was scratched.

The edges were worn.

But it was real.

The box Renata had been searching for.

The box his wife had hidden before she died.

Daniel opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Old receipts.

A small key.

And several documents.

Dolores picked up one paper.

Her face changed.

"What is it?""

She handed it to Daniel.

It was a bank record.

A large transfer.

Made months before his wife's accident.

The name attached to the account made Daniel freeze.

Renata.

"This can't be right.""

Dolores looked at him.

"It is.""

Daniel searched through the box faster.

Another document.

Then another.

Then a photograph.

A photograph that made Sofia hide behind him.

It showed Renata.

Standing outside a building.

With a man Daniel had never seen before.

On the back of the photo was a handwritten note.

*The person who knows the truth.*

Daniel stared.

"Who is he?""

Before anyone answered, a voice came from the attic door.

"Someone you should have never met.""

They turned.

Renata stood there.

No fear.

No pretending.

Just anger.

The kind Sofia knew too well.

Daniel stepped in front of his daughter.

"How did you know we were here?""

Renata smiled.

A cold, empty smile.

"Because I knew eventually you would find it.""

Dolores stepped forward.

"You were afraid of this box.""

Renata looked at her.

"You have always talked too much.""

Daniel held up the photograph.

"Who is he?""

Renata didn't answer.

Instead, she looked at Sofia.

And whispered:

"You really should have kept your mouth shut.""

Daniel's expression changed instantly.

"Don't talk to her like that.""

But Sofia wasn't looking at Renata.

She was looking at the photograph.

Her small face turned pale.

"Daddy...""

"What?""

"I know him.""

Everyone froze.

Daniel turned.

"What did you say?""

Sofia pointed at the picture.

"I saw him before.""

Renata's expression finally broke.

May you like

Because she knew.

The secret she had buried was not buried anymore.
