Chapter 9: The Man Who Buried The Truth For Twenty-Seven Years

The message remained on my phone screen.

Ten words.

That was all.

But those ten words carried the weight of twenty-seven years of fear.

*Stop searching for Evelyn Bennett. You already lost once. Don't make the same mistake.*

Nobody spoke.

The hidden room beneath Adrian Sterling’s mansion suddenly felt smaller.

The walls felt closer.

The air felt heavier.

Because for years, I believed the past was something that had already happened.

Something finished.

Something buried.

But I was wrong.

The past wasn't buried.

It was waiting.

Adrian stared at the phone.

“He knows.””

I looked at him.

“Knows what?””

“That you have the documents.””

I held his gaze.

“You mean the documents you hid?””

His expression changed.

A mixture of shame and frustration.

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“Do you understand what your problem has always been, Adrian?””

He looked at me.

“You thought you were protecting yourself.””

I pointed toward the message.

“But all you did was protect the person who destroyed everything.””

Adrian looked down.

He couldn't argue.

Not anymore.

Claire stepped closer.

“My mother knew Victor was dangerous.””

Adrian looked at her.

“What did she tell you?””

Claire hesitated.

“She said there was a man who helped build the company.””

Her voice became quieter.

“She said that man was the reason she had to leave.””

My chest tightened.

“Leave?””

Claire nodded.

“She never said disappear.””

Everyone became silent.

That single word changed everything.

Because all these years, everyone assumed Evelyn vanished.

But what if she didn't?

What if she was forced away?

What if someone made sure nobody could find her?

I looked at Adrian.

“You told me she abandoned us.””

His eyes closed.

“I thought she did.””

“You thought?””

“I saw her leave.””

Claire immediately looked at him.

“You saw her?””

Adrian froze.

The room went silent.

I stepped closer.

“What did you just say?””

Adrian looked trapped.

“I saw her leave that night.””

The words hit me harder than anything else.

For twenty-seven years, I believed Adrian didn't know.

I believed he had answers but refused to share them.

But now I realized something worse.

He had been there.

“You watched her leave.””

“I tried to stop her.””

My voice became cold.

“Why?””

Adrian looked at me.

“Because she knew too much.””

The words escaped before he could take them back.

Claire stared at him.

“What did she know?””

Adrian didn't answer.

I did.

“She knew Victor was changing the records.””

Adrian looked at me.

“Yes.””

“And she was going to expose him.””

“Yes.””

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

“My mother wasn't running away.””

Nobody responded.

Because we all knew the truth now.

She was running toward something.

She was trying to protect the truth.

I looked at Adrian.

“And you let her go.””

His face collapsed.

“I was afraid.””

That answer again.

Fear.

The excuse that had followed him for decades.

But this time, I understood something.

Adrian wasn't afraid of losing money.

He was afraid of losing everything he had become.

His identity.

His empire.

His image.

And because of that fear, Evelyn paid the price.

A sound interrupted us.

Footsteps.

Everyone turned.

Monica appeared at the top of the stairs.

Her face was pale.

“Mr. Sterling.””

Adrian looked up.

“What?””

She held a tablet in her hand.

“There is a problem.””

“What problem?””

She looked at me.

“Someone accessed the company archives.””

My stomach tightened.

“When?””

“Ten minutes ago.””

Adrian walked toward her.

“From where?””

Monica swallowed.

“The original Sterling headquarters.””

Nobody moved.

Because the old headquarters had been abandoned years ago.

Nobody should have been there.

“Who accessed it?”” Adrian asked.

Monica looked at the screen.

Then she said:

“Victor Hale.””

The name echoed through the room.

I felt something I hadn't felt in years.

Certainty.

Fear had kept us searching.

But now we had something else.

A direction.

Victor wanted us to stop.

Which meant we were close.

“Where is the old headquarters?”” Claire asked.

Adrian looked at me.

Then at her.

“You don't want to go there.””

I almost smiled.

“That's exactly where we are going.””

The old Sterling headquarters sat on the edge of downtown Miami.

A forgotten building surrounded by newer, taller structures.

Time had moved on.

But that place hadn't.

The sign outside was broken.

The windows were dusty.

The parking lot was empty.

It looked abandoned.

But we knew better.

People don't break into abandoned places unless they are hiding something.

We entered through a side door.

Inside, everything smelled old.

Dust.

Paper.

Memories.

The walls were covered with faded photographs from the company's early years.

And there we were.

Me.

Adrian.

Evelyn.

Before everything changed.

Claire stopped in front of one photograph.

“My mother was happy.””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

She touched the glass.

“She trusted you.””

I looked at Adrian.

“She trusted all of us.””

We continued deeper into the building.

Then we found the old records room.

The door was open.

Inside, file cabinets had been pulled apart.

Someone had searched through everything.

But they missed one thing.

A small envelope sitting beneath the floorboard.

Adrian looked shocked.

“That's impossible.””

I picked it up.

“Why?””

“Because I checked this room.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten note.

One sentence.

Written by Victor Hale.

*If you found this, then Marcus finally knows the truth.*

I looked at Adrian.

May you like

The next line made my heart stop.

*Now he deserves to know what you did to Evelyn.*
