Chapter 8: The Partner Who Vanished With The Truth

The name Victor Hale stayed in the room like smoke.

Nobody spoke.

Because every person there understood the importance of it.

Victor Hale wasn't some random employee.

He wasn't a forgotten investor.

He was one of the original architects of Sterling Exotic Motors.

Before Adrian Sterling became a billionaire, there was Victor.

Before the company had showrooms across the country, there was Victor.

And before my name disappeared from the records…

Victor was there.

I looked at Adrian.

“You knew.””

He didn't deny it.

“Yes.””

“How long?””

Adrian sat down slowly.

“Almost from the beginning.””

Anger rose inside me.

“You let me believe you did this alone.””

“I was afraid.””

I stared at him.

“Afraid of Victor?””

Adrian nodded.

That answer shocked me.

Because Adrian Sterling was not someone who feared easily.

The world feared him.

Competitors feared him.

Employees feared disappointing him.

But Victor Hale?

That was different.

“What did Victor have over you?”” I asked.

Adrian looked at the old documents on the table.

“The truth.””

Claire crossed her arms.

“That doesn't explain anything.””

Adrian sighed.

“Victor was the one who handled the legal side of the company.””

I remembered.

That was true.

Back then, I focused on the cars.

The designs.

The business ideas.

Evelyn handled organization.

Adrian handled sales.

Victor handled contracts.

We trusted him.

That was our mistake.

“He told us he was protecting the company,” Adrian continued.

“He said the paperwork needed to change because investors wouldn't take us seriously.””

My eyes narrowed.

“And you believed him.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Adrian looked at me.

“Because I was desperate.””

That answer was honest.

Maybe the first honest thing he had said all day.

“When the company started growing, I was terrified of losing everything.””

He looked around the hidden room.

“All of this came from that fear.””

Claire looked disgusted.

“So you sacrificed everyone to protect yourself.””

Adrian didn't respond.

Because there was no defense.

I picked up another document.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

Adrian looked at me.

“Because by the time I realized what Victor had done, it was too late.””

“Too late?””

“Yes.””

His voice dropped.

“He already had control.””

I stared at him.

“You're telling me the billionaire was controlled by someone else?””

Adrian gave a bitter smile.

“Yes.””

That was the part nobody understood about power.

People assumed the person at the top had no chains.

But sometimes the highest person in the room was just the person hiding the biggest prison.

“What happened to Victor?”” Claire asked.

Adrian looked toward the dark shelves.

“He disappeared.””

“When?””

“Shortly after Evelyn vanished.””

The room became silent again.

My heart sank.

The timing was impossible to ignore.

I looked at Adrian.

“Did Victor have anything to do with Evelyn?””

His face tightened.

“I don't know.””

That answer wasn't enough.

“You don't know?””

“I searched.””

“For how long?””

“Years.””

I stepped closer.

“And you never found him?””

Adrian shook his head.

“No.””

Then Ethan suddenly spoke.

“What if he found you?””

Everyone looked at him.

Adrian frowned.

“What?””

Ethan looked nervous.

“I mean…”

He hesitated.

“Someone like Victor Hale wouldn't disappear without a reason.””

He looked at the documents.

“Maybe he didn't run.””

Nobody moved.

“Maybe he stayed hidden.””

The thought settled over us.

Because it made sense.

A man who helped build a billion-dollar empire.

A man who knew every weakness.

A man who controlled the paperwork.

He wouldn't just vanish.

He would wait.

And if he had been waiting…

Then why?

My phone suddenly vibrated.

Everyone looked at me.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

Then I saw the message.

One sentence.

My blood went cold.

*Stop searching for Evelyn Bennett. You already lost once. Don't make the same mistake.*

Claire saw my expression.

“What happened?””

I showed her the screen.

Adrian immediately stood.

“That number…”

“What?””

He stared at the message.

His face had gone pale.

“You don't understand.””

“Then explain.””

Adrian looked at me.

Because he recognized something.

Something I didn't.

“The number.””

I waited.

“It belongs to Victor Hale.””

Nobody spoke.

Because the man we thought was gone…

The man who controlled the secret…

May you like

Had just proven he was watching us.

And he knew exactly what we were doing.
