Chapter 7: The Document That Changed the Thorne Legacy
For several seconds, Marcus Thorne could not move.
The old document in Adrian’s hand seemed heavier than it should have been.
It was only paper.
A few pages covered in ink.
But Marcus knew that sometimes the smallest pieces of evidence could destroy everything a person believed about their own life.
Adrian watched him carefully.
For the first time in years, Marcus saw something different in his brother’s expression.
Not anger.
Not jealousy.
Pain.
“You want to know why I did it?”” Adrian asked.
Marcus did not answer.
His eyes remained fixed on the document.
“Because I spent my entire life watching everyone believe you were the only one who mattered.””
Adrian’s voice shook slightly.
“You were the son who got the responsibility. The son who got the trust. The son who got the meetings with our father.””
Marcus finally looked at him.
“That doesn’t mean he loved you less.””
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“You still don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
Adrian stepped closer.
“You always thought being chosen was a gift.””
He held up the document.
“But sometimes being chosen means being trapped.””
Marcus frowned.
“What is that supposed to mean?””
Adrian looked down at the papers.
“Read it.””
Marcus hesitated.
Every instinct told him to be careful.
To leave.
To take the document and have his lawyers examine it.
But this was Adrian.
His brother.
The person he had trusted for decades.
Slowly, Marcus took the document.
The first page looked official.
A legal agreement.
A family trust amendment.
His eyes moved across the words.
Then stopped.
A strange feeling spread through his body.
“What is this?””
Adrian’s expression remained cold.
“The original plan.””
Marcus continued reading.
The document was dated years before their father died.
It contained details about the future ownership of several family assets.
But something was wrong.
Something that made no sense.
According to the document, their father had planned to divide control of the family empire between both sons.
Not Marcus alone.
Both.
Marcus looked up.
“This doesn’t prove anything.””
Adrian’s face hardened.
Marcus turned the page.
Then another.
And another.
Near the end was a signature.
Their father’s.
But beneath it was something else.
A note from a legal advisor.
A note explaining that the agreement had been changed after a private conversation with Marcus.
Marcus felt confused.
“I never saw this.””
“Exactly.””
Adrian’s voice became sharper.
“You never saw it because it disappeared.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Are you saying I had something to do with this?””
Adrian did not answer.
That silence was worse than an accusation.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Say it.””
Adrian looked at him.
“I’m saying you benefited from it.””
The words landed like a punch.
Because that was the one thing Marcus could not deny.
He had benefited.
He had inherited control.
He had become the face of the family.
He had never questioned why.
Because he trusted his father.
But now a question appeared.
A question he never wanted to ask.
Had his father hidden something from him?
“Where did you get this?””
Adrian looked away.
“From our father’s private storage.””
“When?””
“Six months ago.””
Marcus’s eyes narrowed.
“Six months?””
Adrian nodded.
“And you waited until now?””
“I needed time.””
“For what?””
Adrian smiled sadly.
“To decide whether I wanted justice or revenge.””
Marcus stared at him.
“And you chose revenge.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
For a moment, Marcus saw regret.
Then it disappeared.
“You don’t get to judge me.””
Marcus shook his head.
“I’m not judging your pain.””
His voice became colder.
“I’m judging your choices.””
The silence between them became unbearable.
Then Adrian said something unexpected.
“You think Isabella was the mastermind?””
Marcus said nothing.
Adrian continued.
“She wasn’t.””
A chill moved through Marcus.
“What?””
“She was angry. She was obsessed. She wanted your life.””
Adrian looked directly at him.
“But she wasn’t the person who created the plan.””
Marcus felt his heart sink.
“Then who was?””
Adrian remained silent.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Who?””
Before Adrian could answer, Marcus’s phone rang.
Richard.
Marcus answered immediately.
“What happened?””
Richard’s voice was urgent.
“Where are you?””
“Meeting Adrian.””
A pause.
“Marcus, leave.””
The seriousness in Richard’s voice immediately caught his attention.
“Why?””
“We found something.””
“What?””
“It’s about your father.””
Marcus froze.
Adrian noticed.
“What did he say?””
Marcus ignored him.
“Tell me.””
Richard lowered his voice.
“The document Adrian showed you.””
Marcus looked at Adrian.
“You know about it?””
“Yes.””
The answer shocked him.
“How?””
“Because I found the same document.””
Marcus became silent.
Richard continued.
“But there’s something Adrian doesn’t know.””
“What?””
“The document he has is incomplete.””
Marcus looked down at the papers.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying someone removed pages.””
The room suddenly felt colder.
Adrian watched Marcus.
“Who is Richard?””
Marcus ignored the question.
“Where are the missing pages?””
“We’re trying to find out.””
Marcus looked at Adrian.
For the first time, uncertainty appeared on his brother’s face.
Maybe Adrian knew less than he thought.
Maybe someone had used him too.
“Adrian,” Marcus said.
His brother looked up.
“Where did you get this?””
“I told you.””
“From where exactly?””
Adrian hesitated.
“A storage room.””
“Whose storage room?””
Another hesitation.
Then:
“Daniel’s.””
The answer changed everything.
Marcus stared at him.
“You found this at Daniel Voss’s property?””
Adrian nodded slowly.
“He gave it to me.””
Marcus felt a wave of realization.
Daniel had not only manipulated Isabella.
He had not only targeted Marcus’s company.
He had been controlling Adrian.
Using his resentment.
Using his pain.
Using the one weakness Marcus never thought anyone would exploit.
Family.
“You were never trying to take what was yours,” Marcus said quietly.
Adrian looked confused.
“What?””
“You were being used.””
Anger flashed across Adrian’s face.
“Don’t do that.””
“Do what?””
“Act like you understand.””
Marcus shook his head.
“I understand enough.””
“No, you don’t.””
Adrian stepped back.
“You had everything. You don’t know what it feels like to spend your entire life being compared to someone else.””
Marcus looked at his brother.
“You’re right.””
Adrian stopped.
Marcus continued.
“I don’t know what that feels like.””
The honesty surprised him.
“But I know what it feels like to lose someone I love because of my mistakes.””
Adrian looked away.
Marcus lowered his voice.
“I lost my wife’s trust because I refused to see the truth.””
A pause.
“And now I’m losing my brother because you refused to see yours.””
For a moment, Adrian looked like he wanted to say something.
But then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
Marcus noticed.
“Who is it?””
Adrian did not answer.
The phone rang again.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Adrian.””
Slowly, Adrian turned the phone around.
The name on the screen made Marcus’s blood run cold.
Daniel Voss.
Adrian answered.
Neither brother spoke.
They only listened.
A voice came through.
“You should not have shown him the document.””
Adrian’s face changed.
Because Daniel was not angry.
He was disappointed.
Like a parent speaking to a child who had made a mistake.
Marcus immediately understood.
Daniel had been watching.
He knew about the meeting.
He knew Marcus had seen the document.
“How did you know?”” Adrian asked.
Daniel ignored the question.
“You were supposed to wait.””
Adrian looked confused.
“Wait for what?””
Silence.
Then Daniel answered:
“For Marcus to destroy himself.””
Marcus felt a chill.
Daniel continued.
“The plan was never to attack him directly.””
A pause.
“The plan was to make him lose everything important first.””
Adrian slowly looked at Marcus.
The truth finally reached him.
Daniel had never cared about his pain.
He had only cared about using it.
“You lied to me,” Adrian whispered.
Daniel’s voice remained calm.
“I gave you purpose.””
“No.””
Adrian’s face hardened.
“You gave me hatred.””
The call ended.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Marcus looked at his brother.
And for the first time that night, he did not see an enemy.
He saw someone who had been manipulated.
Someone who had made terrible choices.
Someone who might still have a chance to change.
But before Marcus could speak, Adrian’s phone received a message.
One sentence.
Both brothers read it.
*You have ten minutes before everyone learns what your family has been hiding.*
Marcus looked at Adrian.
“What does that mean?””
Adrian’s face turned pale.
“I don’t know.””
Then another message arrived.
This time, there was an attachment.
A photograph.
Marcus opened it.
And his entire world stopped.
The picture showed his father.
Alive.
Standing beside Daniel Voss.
Taken years after everyone believed their father had died.
Marcus stared at the image.
Impossible.
His father had been gone for years.
But there he was.
And beneath the photograph was one final message.
May you like
*Your father never told you the truth.*
*Now you’re going to find out why.*
