Calm

Chapter 2: The Recording That Changed Everything

The hospital hallway had never felt so long.

Marcus Thorne stood outside the private suite with his arms crossed, staring at the closed doors where his wife was being examined.

Every second felt heavier than the last.

He had faced hostile investors who wanted to destroy his companies. He had sat across conference tables from people who had spent months planning his downfall. He had survived lawsuits, betrayals, and business wars that had made headlines around the world.

But nothing prepared him for this.

Nothing prepared him for seeing the woman he loved lying on the floor, protecting their unborn child from someone they both knew.

Someone they trusted.

The hallway lights reflected against the polished marble floor as doctors and nurses moved quickly around him.

But Marcus barely noticed.

His entire focus remained on one question.

Why?

Why would Isabella do this?

He had known her for years.

Or at least, he thought he had.

A few feet away, Richard Thorne stood silently.

Khloe’s uncle had always been different from the rest of the wealthy families Marcus knew.

He never cared about appearances.

He never cared about reputation.

While others in their world spent their lives protecting their public image, Richard spent his career exposing people who hid behind theirs.

That was why Marcus knew Isabella was in trouble.

Richard had already seen enough.

“You should have listened to her,” Richard finally said.

Marcus looked at him.

The words were calm.

But they carried disappointment.

Marcus lowered his eyes.

“I know.””

Richard studied him.

“No. You understand now.””

The billionaire said nothing.

Because Richard was right.

Understanding something after the damage was done was not the same as preventing it.

For months, Khloe had tried to tell him something was wrong.

She never demanded that he cut Isabella out of his life.

She never tried to control who he spoke to.

She simply wanted him to see what she saw.

The way Isabella always found reasons to be close.

The way conversations changed whenever Khloe entered a room.

The way Isabella looked at Marcus like she was waiting for something.

Marcus had called it insecurity.

Stress.

Pregnancy emotions.

He had convinced himself he was being reasonable.

Now those explanations felt like excuses.

“I thought I was protecting my marriage by avoiding unnecessary conflict,” Marcus said quietly.

Richard looked toward the suite doors.

“You weren’t protecting your marriage.””

A pause.

“You were protecting your comfort.””

The words hit harder than Marcus expected.

Because deep down, he knew they were true.

Avoiding difficult conversations had been easier.

Believing everything was fine had been easier.

Admitting that someone close to him had dangerous intentions meant accepting that he had failed to recognize the warning signs.

A security officer approached them.

“Mr. Thorne?””

Marcus immediately looked up.

“Yes?””

“We have reviewed the initial footage.””

Richard’s expression remained unreadable.

“What does it show?””

The officer hesitated.

“It shows the incident clearly.””

Marcus felt his chest tighten.

“Play it.””

The officer glanced toward the suite.

“Are you sure?””

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“Yes.””

A few minutes later, they entered a small security room near the hospital’s private wing.

A large monitor displayed the camera footage.

The image was silent at first.

The private suite appeared peaceful.

Almost normal.

Then Isabella entered.

Marcus watched carefully.

He saw her walk into the room with the same confident expression she had shown at countless events.

Then Khloe appeared.

Even through the screen, Marcus could see his wife trying to remain polite.

Trying to avoid conflict.

Trying to keep the peace.

That was who Khloe was.

She always searched for a solution before a fight.

The footage continued.

The two women spoke.

The security officer adjusted the volume.

The room filled with their voices.

“You were never supposed to stand beside him.””

Marcus froze.

He heard Isabella’s words clearly.

No confusion.

No misunderstanding.

No hidden meaning.

Just hatred.

Richard leaned forward.

The footage continued.

“You were supposed to smile for the cameras, give him the child he wanted… and disappear.””

Marcus felt his hands tighten into fists.

Those words were not spoken in anger alone.

They revealed something deeper.

Isabella had created an entire fantasy in her mind.

A fantasy where Khloe was temporary.

Where the marriage was an obstacle.

Where Marcus belonged to her.

The video continued.

Khloe told her to leave.

She remained calm.

She tried to end the conversation.

Then Isabella moved.

The moment happened quickly.

But there was no denying it.

No ambiguity.

No possibility of misunderstanding.

Isabella attacked.

Marcus watched himself entering the room minutes later.

He saw the exact moment when Isabella changed.

The tears.

The fear.

The performance.

The lie.

The security officer stopped the footage.

Nobody spoke.

The silence was unbearable.

Finally, Richard leaned back.

“That is enough.””

Marcus stared at the frozen image of Isabella standing over his wife.

A strange calm settled over him.

Not because he felt better.

Because his confusion was gone.

For months, he had wondered if Khloe had misunderstood Isabella.

Now he knew.

She had not.

“Save every copy,” Marcus said.

The security officer nodded.

“We already secured the files.””

“Send one copy to my attorney.””

Richard looked at him.

“And another?””

Marcus looked back at the screen.

“The police.””

Richard gave a small nod.

That was the Marcus Thorne people knew.

The man who moved quickly when a decision was made.

But this time, it was different.

This was not about business.

This was about his family.

When they returned to the hallway, Isabella was waiting.

She had been sitting in a chair near the window.

The moment she saw Marcus, she stood.

“Marcus…”

Her voice trembled.

“I know this looks bad, but you need to understand—”

“Stop.””

The single word silenced her.

Isabella stared at him.

She had expected anger.

She had expected questions.

She had expected a chance to explain.

But she did not expect this.

Cold certainty.

“You lied to me.””

Her face changed.

Only slightly.

But Marcus noticed.

“I was scared,” she whispered.

“No.””

His voice remained quiet.

“You were calculating.””

Isabella looked hurt.

“You think I wanted this?””

Marcus stared at her.

“You attacked my wife.””

“I didn’t mean to hurt her.””

The answer came instantly.

Again.

Too instantly.

Marcus noticed every detail now.

Every pause.

Every movement.

Every attempt to manipulate emotion.

“You didn’t mean to hurt her,” he repeated.

His expression hardened.

“Then why did you keep going?””

Isabella had no answer.

For the first time, she looked completely lost.

The hospital doors opened.

A nurse stepped out.

“Mr. Thorne?””

Marcus immediately turned.

“How is she?””

The nurse’s expression softened.

“She is stable.””

Marcus released a breath he did not realize he was holding.

“But the doctor wants to monitor her and the baby closely overnight.””

“Can I see her?””

The nurse nodded.

“Yes. One person at a time.””

Marcus started walking toward the room.

Then he stopped.

He looked back at Isabella.

There was a time when he would have felt responsible for her emotions.

He would have tried to soften the situation.

He would have searched for a reason to forgive.

Not tonight.

Tonight, he understood something.

Some betrayals did not happen because people made mistakes.

Some betrayals happened because people made choices.

And Isabella Rossi had made hers.

Inside the suite, Khloe was awake.

Her face looked exhausted, but when she saw Marcus enter, her eyes immediately filled with emotion.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

Marcus froze.

“Sorry?””

“I tried to warn you.””

His heart broke.

He walked to her bedside and gently held her hand.

“No.””

His voice was softer now.

“You don’t apologize.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“I thought maybe I was imagining things.””

“You weren’t.””

Marcus looked at her.

“I should have believed you.””

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

The pain between them was not only from what happened tonight.

It was from all the moments before tonight.

All the times Khloe felt unheard.

All the times she stood alone while someone slowly tried to destroy her life.

Marcus brought her hand to his lips.

“I promise you something.””

Khloe looked at him.

“I will find out everything.””

A shadow crossed his face.

“Not just what happened tonight.””

He glanced toward the closed door.

“Everything Isabella has been hiding.””

Outside the room, Isabella stood alone.

And for the first time in months, she realized something terrifying.

She had planned to destroy Khloe’s marriage.

She had planned to make Marcus see Khloe as the problem.

She had planned to become the woman everyone sympathized with.

But she had made one mistake.

A mistake she could not undo.

She had created the evidence herself.

And now, that evidence belonged to the one man powerful enough to bring her entire world crashing down.
