Chapter 5: The Hidden Witness Who Knew the Truth
Marcus Thorne had spent his entire life believing information was power.
In business, the person who knew the most usually controlled the outcome.
That belief had helped him build an empire.
It had helped him survive situations where others would have failed.
But now, standing alone in the hospital hallway with an anonymous message glowing on his phone, Marcus realized something terrifying.
The most dangerous information was not the information he had.
It was the information someone else was hiding from him.
He stared at the message again.
*Ask who really benefits when your family falls apart.*
A normal person might have ignored it.
A normal person might have assumed it was a threat from someone trying to create fear.
But Marcus knew better.
The person who sent it knew exactly what to say.
They knew Daniel and Isabella were already exposed.
They knew Marcus was searching for answers.
And they wanted him to look deeper.
The question was why.
A doctor stepped out of the examination room.
“Mr. Thorne?””
Marcus immediately put the phone away.
“Yes?””
The doctor offered a professional but reassuring expression.
“Your wife and the baby are stable.””
The words brought a wave of relief.
“Are you sure?””
“Yes. There are no signs of immediate danger. However, because of what happened, we want her to remain under observation.””
Marcus nodded.
“Whatever she needs.””
The doctor hesitated.
“There is one more thing.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Your wife mentioned something.””
“What?””
The doctor glanced toward the room.
“She said the woman who attacked her had been threatening her for weeks.””
Marcus’s expression changed.
“Threatening?””
“Not physically. More emotionally.””
The doctor paused.
“Your wife said she felt watched.””
That sentence stayed with Marcus.
Felt watched.
Because Khloe was not someone who exaggerated.
She avoided drama.
She avoided conflict.
She had spent months trying to convince herself that Isabella was harmless.
If she said she felt watched, then something had happened.
Something Marcus did not know about.
When he returned to the room, Khloe was awake.
She looked exhausted.
But when Marcus walked in, she gave him a small smile.
“How is the baby?””
“Strong.””
Her eyes immediately softened.
“Good.””
Marcus sat beside her.
But this time, he did not start with questions.
He started with an apology.
“I need to know everything.””
Khloe looked at him.
“Everything?””
“Yes.””
She understood what he meant.
The moments she had kept quiet.
The conversations she had ignored.
The things she had dismissed because she did not want to create more problems.
Khloe looked down at her hands.
“After we announced the pregnancy, Isabella changed.””
Marcus listened carefully.
“How?””
“She started sending messages.””
“What kind of messages?””
“Nothing obvious.””
Khloe looked frustrated.
“That was the problem.””
She took a breath.
“She was careful.””
Marcus leaned closer.
“She would say things that sounded friendly.””
“Examples?””
Khloe looked toward the window.
“She once told me I was lucky.””
Marcus frowned.
“Lucky?””
“Yes.””
A bitter smile appeared.
“She said, ‘Not every woman gets to have a man like Marcus. You should appreciate how difficult it is for someone like him to stay loyal.’”
Marcus felt uncomfortable.
Because the words sounded harmless.
But the meaning behind them was different.
“She was testing you,” he said.
Khloe nodded.
“I think so.””
“What else?””
“She asked me strange questions.””
“About what?””
“About our marriage.””
Marcus’s expression hardened.
“What questions?””
“She asked if you ever regretted settling down.””
The room became silent.
“She asked if you felt trapped.””
Marcus looked away.
A painful realization formed.
Isabella had not been trying to steal him overnight.
She had been slowly creating doubt.
Planting ideas.
Searching for weaknesses.
“She wanted me to feel insecure,” Khloe whispered.
Marcus looked back at her.
“No.””
Khloe met his eyes.
“She wanted both of us to feel insecure.””
That was the moment Marcus understood the true strategy.
Isabella did not simply want Khloe gone.
She wanted the marriage damaged first.
She wanted distance.
Suspicion.
Arguments.
She wanted Marcus and Khloe to destroy their own relationship before she ever had to do anything.
A knock interrupted them.
Richard entered.
His expression was serious.
“We found the person who gave Isabella the envelope.””
Marcus immediately stood.
“Who?””
Richard looked at him.
“You might not like the answer.””
Marcus waited.
“It was Elaine Parker.””
The room froze.
Elaine.
The charity event coordinator.
The woman who had walked into the suite with Marcus.
The woman who had witnessed the aftermath.
Marcus stared.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
Richard nodded.
“That’s why we investigated further.””
He handed Marcus a document.
“Elaine has worked with the Thorne Foundation for six years.””
Marcus scanned the page.
“Yes.””
“She also has a personal connection to Daniel Voss.””
Marcus looked up.
“What connection?””
Richard’s expression darkened.
“Her brother.””
Marcus stopped.
“Her brother?””
“Michael Parker.””
The name meant something.
Marcus searched his memory.
Then his face changed.
“Michael Parker was involved in the accounting scandal.””
Richard nodded.
“Seven years ago.””
A scandal Marcus remembered clearly.
An executive had been accused of manipulating financial records.
The company had recovered.
The executive had disappeared.
But Marcus never forgot the damage.
“Daniel defended him.””
Richard nodded.
“Because Michael Parker was working for Daniel at the time.””
The pieces were falling together.
Daniel.
Isabella.
Elaine.
A network.
Not random people.
People connected by old secrets.
“Where is Elaine now?”” Marcus asked.
Richard looked at him.
“She left the hospital ten minutes ago.””
Marcus immediately grabbed his phone.
“Find her.””
But before he could make another call, the security officer rushed into the room.
“Mr. Thorne.””
Everyone turned.
“What happened?””
The officer looked nervous.
“We found something in the hospital security system.””
“What?””
“A camera angle we didn’t know existed.””
Richard frowned.
“Another camera?””
“Yes.””
The officer handed over a tablet.
“This camera covers the hallway near the private elevator.””
Marcus watched the footage.
At first, nothing.
Then Isabella appeared.
She was not alone.
A man stood with her.
Not Daniel.
Not Elaine.
Someone else.
Marcus moved closer.
The man turned slightly toward the camera.
And Marcus felt the air leave his lungs.
Because he knew him.
He knew him very well.
“No…”
Khloe looked at him.
“Marcus?””
He did not answer.
He simply stared at the screen.
The man beside Isabella was someone who had been trusted by the entire Thorne family.
Someone who had access to their home.
Someone who knew their schedules.
Someone who knew their secrets.
Richard noticed his reaction.
“Who is he?””
Marcus’s voice was barely audible.
“My brother.””
Silence filled the room.
Khloe’s eyes widened.
“Your brother?””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“Adrian Thorne.””
The name carried weight.
Because Adrian was not just Marcus’s younger brother.
He was family.
The last person Marcus ever imagined standing on the other side.
The video continued.
Adrian handed Isabella something.
Then he looked directly toward the camera.
Almost as if he knew someone would eventually see it.
Marcus felt a cold realization settle over him.
The attack on Khloe had not been caused by one person.
It had not been a moment of jealousy.
It had been a plan.
A plan created by people close enough to know exactly where to strike.
And now Marcus understood the real danger.
May you like
The enemy was not outside his family.
The enemy had already entered it.
