Chapter 9: The Hidden Enemy in Our Home
I read the letter three times.
Then a fourth.
Because my mind refused to accept the words.
The person who wrote it claimed Adrian’s betrayal had started years before Vanessa.
Before the affair.
Before the gala.
Before the slap.
There were secrets inside my marriage that even I didn’t know.
I called Marcus immediately.
He arrived within twenty minutes.
Julian and Caleb followed shortly after.
I handed Marcus the letter.
Nobody spoke while he read.
Finally, he looked up.
“Who sent this?””
“I don’t know.””
Julian took it carefully.
“I’ll find out.””
Caleb looked at me.
“What does it say?””
I hesitated.
Then I answered.
“Adrian wasn’t just cheating.””
The room became quiet.
“He was planning something.””
Marcus’s expression hardened.
“What kind of something?””
I looked at the letter.
“I don’t know.””
Julian scanned the page.
“There are references here.””
“To what?””
He pointed.
“Your marriage.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“There are dates.””
My heart stopped.
“What dates?””
“The year you married Adrian.””
I stared.
That was impossible.
The letter suggested Adrian had chosen me for a reason.
Not because he loved me.
Not because he wanted a life with me.
But because of something connected to my family.
I felt sick.
“No.””
Marcus immediately stepped forward.
“Elena.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I refuse to believe that.””
Because betrayal was one thing.
But realizing your entire marriage might have been a lie?
That was something else.
Caleb looked furious.
“We need to know the truth.””
For the first time, I agreed.
Not because I wanted revenge.
Because I needed answers.
Julian began searching.
Within hours, he discovered something.
A company.
Created six months before Adrian met me.
A company connected to his family.
And connected to mine.
I stared at the information.
“What does this mean?””
Marcus read the documents.
“Your father.””
My heart tightened.
“My father?””
He nodded.
“There was a business dispute years ago.””
I shook my head.
“My father never mentioned Adrian.””
“Because Adrian’s family hid it.””
The pieces started falling into place.
The marriage.
The timing.
The sudden interest Adrian showed in me.
The way he pushed for a wedding quickly.
I remembered.
The first year of our relationship.
The questions he asked.
Not about my dreams.
Not about my childhood.
About my family.
About my brothers.
About our businesses.
At the time, I thought he was curious.
Now?
I wasn’t sure.
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice spoke.
“Elena.””
I froze.
I recognized it.
Vanessa.
“What do you want?””
A shaky breath.
“I need your help.””
I almost laughed.
“My help?””
“Yes.””
“Why would I help you?””
“Because Adrian is going to destroy both of us.””
The room went silent.
I put the phone on speaker.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa’s voice trembled.
“He lied to me too.””
Nobody moved.
“He told me he loved me.””
She swallowed.
“But I was just part of his plan.””
I looked at my brothers.
Marcus’s eyes narrowed.
“Explain.””
Vanessa continued.
“Adrian never planned to leave you.””
My stomach turned.
“He wanted your family’s connections.””
The words hit like a physical blow.
“He wanted access to the Whitmore name.””
I closed my eyes.
The woman who had been my enemy was now confirming my worst fear.
“He married you because of who you were.””
Silence.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“Elena… your husband never loved you.””
I ended the call.
Not because I didn’t believe her.
Because I did.
And that was the most painful truth of all.
For eight years, I had wondered why my husband stopped choosing me.
May you like
Now I understood.
Maybe he never chose me at all.
