Chapter 11: The Enemy Nobody Saw Coming

I left the restaurant with more questions than answers.

And that was exactly what Adrian wanted.

Confusion.

Doubt.

Uncertainty.

Because even when he was losing, he was still trying to control the story.

But this time, I refused.

I went directly to my brothers.

They were waiting.

One look at my face told them everything.

“What happened?”” Caleb asked.

I sat down.

“Adrian mentioned Dad.””

The room changed.

My father was a subject we rarely discussed.

Not because we forgot him.

Because losing him had changed all of us.

He had been the foundation of our family.

The person who taught us that success meant nothing if you couldn’t protect the people you loved.

“What did he say?”” Marcus asked.

I repeated everything.

Julian immediately started searching.

Within minutes, his expression changed.

“I found something.””

He turned the laptop around.

There was an old business record.

A company merger.

A failed investment.

A lawsuit.

My father’s name.

And Adrian’s father’s name.

Marcus read carefully.

“This happened twenty years ago.””

“What happened?””

Julian answered.

“Your father exposed financial fraud inside Adrian’s father’s company.””

I stared.

“He did what?””

“He discovered illegal activity.””

Caleb shook his head.

“So Adrian’s family blamed him.””

“Yes.””

The room became quiet.

Everything suddenly made sense.

Adrian didn’t just want money.

He wanted revenge.

My marriage wasn’t a love story.

It was a battlefield.

And I had been the prize.

A person.

A daughter.

A sister.

A woman.

Reduced to a strategy.

I felt sick.

“How could someone do that?””

Nobody answered.

Because there was no answer.

Some people wanted power so badly they forgot other people had hearts.

That evening, Vanessa contacted me again.

This time, she came in person.

I almost refused to see her.

Almost.

But curiosity won.

She looked completely different from the woman at the gala.

No designer dress.

No perfect makeup.

No confidence.

Just fear.

“You look terrible,” I said.

She laughed bitterly.

“I deserve that.””

I studied her.

“Why are you here?””

“To tell you everything.””

“Why?””

“Because Adrian is going to sacrifice me.””

That sounded exactly like him.

I crossed my arms.

“Start talking.””

Vanessa sat down.

“I met Adrian three years ago.””

I listened.

“He told me he was unhappy.””

I almost smiled.

The oldest excuse.

“He said his marriage was only an arrangement.””

My expression hardened.

“Of course he did.””

“He told me he would leave you.””

“He never planned to.””

“No.””

Vanessa looked ashamed.

“He didn’t.””

For once, I believed her.

“Why stay with him?””

She looked down.

“Because I was stupid.””

That answer surprised me.

She continued.

“I thought I won.””

Her eyes filled.

“I thought I replaced you.””

A painful silence followed.

“But I didn’t.””

“No.””

I answered.

“You were just another person he used.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

Then she handed me a folder.

“What is this?””

“Proof.””

I opened it.

Inside were copies of messages.

Adrian’s messages.

Planning.

Manipulating.

Using both of us.

One sentence caught my attention.

*Once Elena’s family trusts me completely, everything will fall into place.*

My hands shook.

Eight years.

Eight years of pretending.

Eight years of building a life with someone who was waiting for an opportunity.

Vanessa whispered:

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

The strange thing was…

I believed her.

Not because she deserved forgiveness.

But because I finally understood.

Adrian was the person who destroyed everyone around him.

Including the woman he claimed to love.

After she left, Marcus spoke.

“We have enough.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

He frowned.

“No?””

I closed the folder.

“We don’t just expose him.””

“What do you mean?””

I looked toward the window.

“We make sure everyone knows who he really is.””

Because this wasn’t about my broken marriage anymore.

May you like

It was about every person Adrian hurt while pretending to be a hero.

And I was done protecting him.
