Chapter 9: The Secret Adrian Never Wanted Me to Find
The next morning, I woke up before sunrise.
I couldn’t sleep.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Adrian’s face.
Not the face from the gala.
Not the angry face.
The face from years ago.
The man who promised forever.
The man who held my hand and told me I was his safe place.
That was the hardest part.
Not losing him.
Realizing I had lost someone who never truly existed.
I walked into Marcus’s kitchen at 5:30 a.m.
He was already there.
Of course he was.
My oldest brother had always been the person who woke up early when everyone else needed him.
“You didn’t sleep,” he said.
Neither did you.””
He smiled slightly.
“Fair.””
I sat across from him.
“Marcus.””
“Yes?””
“What if I had never found out?””
He became quiet.
That question had been haunting me.
What if Adrian had never made that mistake?
What if he had continued pretending?
What if I had spent another ten years believing a lie?
Marcus answered carefully.
“Then you would have eventually discovered the truth.””
“How?””
“Because people like Adrian always reveal themselves.””
I looked down.
“I feel stupid.””
His expression changed.
“Elena.””
“I ignored everything.””
“No.””
His voice became firm.
“You trusted someone you loved.””
“That sounds stupid.””
“No.””
He leaned forward.
“The shame belongs to the person who betrayed trust, not the person who offered it.””
Those words stayed with me.
Later that day, Julian discovered something hidden in Adrian’s company records.
Something nobody expected.
A second foundation account.
Not connected to Cross Hope.
A private account.
The beneficiary name shocked all of us.
My name.
“Elena Whitmore.””
I stared at the screen.
“What is this?””
Julian frowned.
“We’re still investigating.””
Marcus looked concerned.
“Adrian created an account under your name?””
“Yes.””
“But why?””
That was the question.
Why would Adrian create something connected to me?
The answer came hours later.
And it changed everything.
Caleb called from his office.
“I found something.””
His voice was serious.
“What?””
“A document filed six years ago.””
“About what?””
He paused.
“Your inheritance.””
My heart stopped.
My inheritance.
Very few people knew about that.
When my parents died, my family trust was established.
I had access to it.
But I never cared about the money.
I wanted my own life.
My own success.
I had told Adrian about it before we married.
But I made one thing clear.
The money was separate.
Mine.
Not his.
“What does the document say?””
Caleb answered.
“Adrian tried to gain access.””
Silence.
“He failed.””
I closed my eyes.
Six years ago.
That was before Vanessa.
Before the public betrayal.
Before the gala.
He had been planning.
For years.
The picture became clearer.
Adrian didn’t suddenly become cruel.
He had been calculating.
I had just been too loyal to notice.
That evening, I stood outside my old house.
The house Adrian and I shared.
The place where I had spent eight years believing I was building a future.
Now it looked different.
Smaller.
Colder.
A car pulled into the driveway.
Adrian stepped out.
He looked exhausted.
Broken.
But I knew better than to confuse weakness with regret.
“Elena.””
I turned.
“What are you doing here?””
“I need to talk.””
I almost laughed.
“About what?””
“About us.””
“There is no us anymore.””
Pain crossed his face.
Real pain.
But I couldn’t let that erase everything.
“You don’t understand.””
I looked at him.
“Then explain.””
He took a step closer.
“I made mistakes.””
I waited.
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
He looked away.
“Of losing everything.””
I stared at him.
“You were afraid of losing everything, so you tried to take everything from me?””
He had no answer.
That was answer enough.
Finally, he whispered:
“I never thought you would fight back.””
I nodded slowly.
“I know.””
The sadness in my voice surprised him.
“That was always your mistake.””
I walked past him.
But before I reached the door, he said something that stopped me.
“Elena.””
I turned.
“I really did love you.””
For a moment, my heart hurt.
Because some part of me wanted to believe him.
Then I remembered the ballroom.
The slap.
The humiliation.
The plan to destroy me.
I looked at the man I once loved.
“I believe you loved the version of me that never challenged you.””
His face changed.
“But you never loved the woman I actually was.””
I entered the house.
And closed the door.
Behind me, Adrian Cross stood alone in the darkness.

For the first time in his life…
He finally understood what it felt like to lose something he thought would always belong to him.
