Chapter 8: The Woman in the Red Dress Finally Cries
Vanessa Laurent disappeared from public view after the board meeting.
For three days, nobody saw her.
The woman who loved cameras suddenly hated them.
The woman who enjoyed being photographed beside Adrian suddenly avoided every reporter.
It was almost strange.
Almost.
But I knew Vanessa.
Not because I knew her personally.
Because I had spent years watching her from a distance.
She was the type of person who loved power more than people.
And now that Adrian’s power was disappearing…
So was her confidence.
I found out she requested a meeting on Friday morning.
I almost refused.
Then I remembered something.
I wanted answers.
Not from Adrian.
From her.
The meeting happened in a quiet hotel lounge.
When Vanessa entered, she looked completely different.
No designer gown.
No diamonds.
No perfect makeup.
Just a tired woman carrying the weight of her own choices.
She sat across from me.
“You look happy.””
I looked at her.
“Do I?””
“Yes.””
She smiled bitterly.
“I thought you would be destroyed.””
I stirred my coffee.
“So did Adrian.””
The silence between us was uncomfortable.
Finally, Vanessa spoke.
“He told me you would never fight back.””
Of course he did.
She looked down.
“He said you were too kind.””
I laughed softly.
“That was his mistake.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“You really loved him.””
It wasn’t a question.
“Yes.””
She looked surprised.
“Why?””
The honesty of the question shocked me.
Because maybe she truly didn’t understand.
“I loved the man he was before he became the man he wanted everyone to believe he was.””
Vanessa looked away.
For the first time, I saw something besides arrogance.
Regret.
“He promised me things.””
I didn’t respond.
“He said he was going to leave you.””
I expected those words to hurt.
But they didn’t.
Not anymore.
“How long did he say that?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Two years.””
I nodded.
“Of course.””
She looked at me.
“You’re not angry?””
“I was.””
I looked through the window.
“But anger doesn’t change the past.””
Vanessa was quiet.
Then she whispered:
“He never loved me either.””
That sentence surprised me.
Because I realized something.
Adrian didn’t destroy our marriage because Vanessa was special.
He destroyed it because he believed he deserved everything.
Attention.
Power.
Control.
He didn’t love women.
He loved being worshiped.
“Why did you come here?”” I asked.
Vanessa looked nervous.
“I have information.””
I waited.
She reached into her purse.
A small flash drive appeared.
“What is that?””
“Copies of emails.””
I didn’t touch it.
“From who?””
“Adrian.””
My expression changed.
Vanessa continued.
“He was planning to remove you from the foundation months ago.””
The words hit me.
“Why?””
“Because he thought you were becoming too involved.””
I stared at her.
Too involved.
With the charity I created.
The work I built.
The people I helped.
“He wanted to replace you publicly.””
My stomach tightened.
“With me.””
I looked at the flash drive.
Vanessa pushed it toward me.
“I know I was wrong.””
I studied her face.
“Why are you helping me?””
She looked down.
“Because I finally realized something.””
“What?””
“He would have done the same thing to me.””
And there it was.
The truth.
The thing about people like Adrian.
Eventually, everyone becomes disposable.
I took the flash drive.
But before leaving, I stopped.
“Vanessa.””
She looked up.
“You should tell the truth publicly.””
Her eyes widened.
“What?””
“You were part of this.””
Her face fell.
“I know.””
“Then don’t hide from it.””
I walked away.
Because justice wasn’t about destroying everyone around Adrian.
It was about everyone taking responsibility.
Including me.
Including Vanessa.
Including him.
That evening, Julian analyzed the files.
His expression changed several times.
Finally, he looked at me.
“Elena.””
“What?””
“There’s something bigger.””
My heart sank.
“What do you mean?””
He turned the laptop toward me.
The emails weren’t just about removing me.
They were about something much worse.
A plan.
A plan Adrian created months before the gala.
A plan to make me look unstable.
A plan to make people believe I was mentally unfit.
A plan to take control of my assets.
My blood ran cold.
“He wasn’t just leaving me.””
Julian looked at me.
“No.””
He closed the laptop.
“He was preparing to destroy you completely.””
For the first time since this began…
I felt afraid.
Not because I wanted Adrian back.
Not because I loved him.
Because I finally understood.

The slap at the gala wasn’t the beginning.
It was the moment he accidentally revealed the monster he had been hiding.
