Chapter 9: The Man Behind the Mask
For several seconds, I forgot how to breathe.
The photograph sat between us.
A piece of paper.
A few pixels.
A frozen moment in time.
Yet somehow, it carried the weight of an explosion.
Because the person in that image looked like Julian.
My husband.
The man lying unconscious inside the ICU.
The man whose life I had spent the entire night trying to save.
The detective watched me carefully.
He wasn't accusing me.
Not yet.
But he was waiting.
Waiting to see if I would defend Julian.
Waiting to see if I would deny what my own eyes were telling me.
I looked at the picture again.
The angle was not perfect.
The lighting was poor.
The person's face was partially hidden.
But the shape.
The height.
The posture.
Everything looked familiar.
Too familiar.
"No.""
The word came out quietly.
Detective Reed leaned forward.
"No?""
I shook my head.
"That can't be him.""
"Why?""
"Because Julian was unconscious.""
The detective didn't answer immediately.
That silence bothered me.
"What?""
He placed another document on the table.
"Security footage shows the person entered the ICU corridor at 2:51 a.m.""
My eyes moved to the timestamp.
2:51.
Before the ambulance arrived.
Before I reached the hospital.
Before anyone knew what was happening.
"And?""
"And according to hospital records, Mr. Whitmore was already inside emergency care at that time.""
I frowned.
"That doesn't make sense.""
"Exactly.""
The word hung in the air.
Exactly.
The detective wasn't telling me Julian was guilty.
He was telling me something impossible had happened.
Something that needed an explanation.
I looked at Teresa.
She had gone completely pale.
"Did you know about this?""
Her eyes filled with fear.
"No.""
But this time...
I believed her.
Because Teresa was many things.
Manipulative.
Controlling.
Secretive.
But she looked genuinely shocked.
"Then what is happening?""
Nobody answered.
Because nobody knew.
The detective collected the photograph.
"We need to verify the identity.""
"How?""
"Facial comparison. Access records. Timeline reconstruction.""
I stood up.
"Do it quickly.""
The detective looked surprised by my urgency.
"You don't want to know what the result is?""
I looked toward the ICU.
"Of course I do.""
I paused.
"But if that is Julian...""
My voice became quieter.
"Then I need to know why.""
The detective nodded.
He understood.
Because the question wasn't only whether Julian had entered that hallway.
The question was why.
Why would a man poison himself?
Why would a man stage his own attack?
Why would he warn me about his family?
Nothing made sense.
Unless there was a piece missing.
A piece that changed everything.
I walked out of the interview room.
Arthur was waiting.
The moment he saw my face, his expression changed.
"What happened?""
I studied him.
For eight years, I had looked at Arthur and seen my husband's father.
Tonight, I saw something else.
A man who knew how to hide.
A man who had controlled people through fear.
A man who had destroyed my career.
"Did Julian ever tell you about the hospital incident eight years ago?""
The question caught him off guard.
Only for a second.
But it was enough.
"No.""
Too fast.
I noticed.
"You knew.""
His expression hardened.
"Be careful with your accusations.""
"I'm not accusing you.""
I stepped closer.
"I'm asking why you destroyed my life.""
The hallway became silent.
Arthur's face changed.
"You don't know what you're talking about.""
"Then explain.""
"I don't owe you an explanation.""
There it was.
The same arrogance.
The same belief that he could decide what others deserved to know.
But something was different now.
I wasn't afraid of him.
Not anymore.
"You told everyone I was responsible.""
His jaw tightened.
"You were the doctor.""
"Yes.""
"And doctors make mistakes.""
The words hit me.
Because they were exactly what I had believed.
For eight years.
I whispered:
"Did I make a mistake?""
Arthur looked away.
That was the answer.
Not the one he said.
The one he couldn't say.
My heart started beating faster.
"Arthur.""
He didn't respond.
"Did I actually make a mistake?""
Finally, he looked at me.
And for a moment...
I saw regret.
Only for a moment.
Then it disappeared.
"You should let the past stay buried.""
My stomach dropped.
Because innocent people didn't say that.
They said:
"You are wrong.""
They said:
"I had nothing to do with it.""
They fought.
Arthur didn't fight.
He warned me.
And that told me everything.
Before I could push further, Serena approached.
Her face was pale.
"Clara.""
I turned.
"What?""
She looked around.
Then lowered her voice.
"We need to talk.""
"About what?""
"About Julian.""
I almost laughed.
"Everyone wants to talk about Julian.""
She ignored my tone.
"Because nobody knows him the way I do.""
That sentence hurt.
But I didn't show it.
"Do you mean because you were with him at three in the morning?""
Her face tightened.
"I told you. It wasn't what you think.""
"Then what was it?""
She looked toward Arthur.
Then Teresa.
Then back at me.
"Julian came to my apartment because he needed help.""
"Help with what?""
"Finding the person who was betraying him.""
My eyes narrowed.
"You?""
"No.""
She shook her head.
"Someone inside the family.""
I already knew.
But I wanted her to say it.
"Arthur?""
She didn't answer.
And again...
Silence was confirmation.
"What did Julian find?""
Serena took a deep breath.
"Records.""
"What kind of records?""
"Old hospital records.""
Everything stopped.
My past.
Again.
Why?
Why did everyone keep returning to that night?
"What do those records have to do with his company?""
Serena looked confused.
"What company?""
I froze.
"You just said Julian was investigating his family.""
"Yes.""
"Then why would he need hospital records?""
Her expression changed.
A terrible realization appeared on her face.
"Wait.""
"What?""
"Julian never told me about a company investigation.""
My heart sank.
"What are you saying?""
"I'm saying...""
She looked terrified.
"I'm saying maybe there were two secrets.""
The words landed heavily.
Two secrets.
One about money.
One about me.
One about his family.
One about my past.
Maybe everyone had been chasing different pieces of the same puzzle.
Before I could respond, Detective Reed returned.
His face told me everything.
The result was ready.
Everyone looked at him.
"What did you find?""
He looked at me first.
Then at the others.
"The person in the security footage was not Julian Whitmore.""
A wave of relief passed through me.
But it disappeared when he continued.
"It was someone else.""
"Who?""
The detective held up a tablet.
The image appeared.
The person in the hallway.
The face was clearer now.
And my heart stopped.
Because I knew him.
Everyone knew him.
He wasn't a stranger.
He wasn't a random employee.
He wasn't an outsider.
He was someone who had been helping us all night.
Someone who had access to Julian's treatment.
Someone who had earned everyone's trust.
The detective said the name.
"Dr. Ethan Cole.""
I froze.
My former colleague.
My old friend.
The man who had worked beside me eight years ago.
The man who was there the night my career ended.
The man who knew exactly what happened.
"No...""
The memory came rushing back.
The investigation.
The missing records.
The accusation.
The person who testified against me.
Ethan.
Detective Reed looked at me.
"You know him?""
I couldn't answer.
Because suddenly the past wasn't buried.
It had been walking beside me the entire night.
"He was my colleague.""
"How well did you know him?""
I stared at the image.
At the man who had returned after eight years.
The man who had entered the ICU.
The man who had access to Julian.
Finally, I whispered:
"Well enough to know...""
I swallowed.
"That he would never do anything without a reason.""
The detective studied me.
"And what reason would that be?""
I looked toward Julian's room.
Then at the picture.
And a terrifying thought appeared.
Maybe Ethan wasn't here to hurt Julian.
Maybe he was here because he knew the truth.
The truth about the night that destroyed my career.
The truth about Arthur.
The truth about Julian.
And the truth about why someone wanted all of us silent.
I turned to Detective Reed.
"Find him.""
"Why?""
"Because eight years ago, Ethan Cole was the only person who knew what really happened.""
A pause.
"And if he is involved tonight...""
I looked at the ICU doors.
"Then he knows why Julian almost died.""
The detective nodded.
But before he could leave, my phone vibrated.
Another message.
I looked down.
Unknown number.
This time, only one sentence.
*Ask Ethan what happened to the woman who died because of you.*
My blood went cold.
Because there was only one person who knew that sentence could destroy me.
Only one person who knew the wound I had spent eight years hiding.
And that meant one thing.
The person sending these messages...
Was not guessing.
They knew me.
May you like
They knew my past.
And they had been waiting eight years for this night.
