Chapter 3: The Evidence Hidden Inside His Phone
The detective's question stayed in the air long after I answered.
"On what?""
I had said:
"On whether you mean enemies outside the family... or inside it.""
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
The kind of silence that followed was not normal silence.
It was the silence of people who were afraid their next words might reveal too much.
Detective Marcus Reed studied every face in front of him.
He had the expression of someone who had spent years watching people lie.
And he knew exactly what a lie looked like.
Arthur was the first to recover.
"Detective, my daughter-in-law is under a lot of stress.""
His voice was polite.
Controlled.
The same voice he used whenever he wanted to make someone appear unreasonable.
"Her husband is fighting for his life. She doesn't know what she's saying.""
I looked at him.
Eight years.
Eight years of watching this man pretend kindness whenever outsiders were present.
Eight years of hearing him tell Julian that I was too emotional.
Too stubborn.
Too difficult.
But tonight, he wasn't protecting me.
He wasn't even protecting Julian.
He was protecting something else.
"Mr. Whitmore," Detective Reed said calmly, "we still need to ask Mrs. Whitmore some questions.""
Arthur's expression tightened.
"But—"
"Alone.""
One word.
A simple word.
But it changed everything.
For the first time that night, Arthur Whitmore was not in control.
He stepped back reluctantly.
Teresa followed him, but before leaving, she gave me a look filled with disappointment.
Not concern.
Not gratitude.
Disappointment.
As if saving her son was something she expected from me.
As if my only value was what I could do for Julian.
The detective waited until they were several feet away.
Then he turned back to me.
"Mrs. Whitmore, start from the beginning.""
I crossed my arms.
"Which beginning?""
He looked surprised.
"The beginning of tonight.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
His eyebrows lifted.
"No?""
"The beginning was not tonight.""
I looked through the glass window again.
Julian was still unconscious.
Machines were keeping track of his heartbeat.
His life was being measured in numbers.
But his choices...
His choices had consequences.
"The beginning was eight years ago.""
The detective didn't interrupt.
So I continued.
"When I married Julian, his family never accepted me.""
I paused.
"That part isn't unusual. Many families don't like their child's spouse at first.""
"But?""
"But with the Whitmores, it was different.""
I looked down at my hands.
"They didn't just dislike me. They wanted me gone.""
Detective Reed wrote something down.
"Why?""
"Because they thought I wasn't from their world.""
That was the simplest explanation.
The truth was more complicated.
The Whitmores were wealthy.
Powerful.
Connected.
They measured people by reputation.
Money.
Family name.
And I had none of those things.
I only had my career.
My medical license.
My determination.
And somehow, that threatened them more than I understood.
"Did this have anything to do with tonight?"" Detective Reed asked.
"Maybe.""
"Maybe?""
I looked at him.
"Julian changed after we got married.""
"How?""
"He became more distant.""
"Did you suspect infidelity?""
The question was direct.
Almost too direct.
I felt something inside me tighten.
"I suspected something was wrong.""
"Because of Serena Hale?""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"Because of Julian.""
The detective looked up.
I continued.
"People think betrayal starts with another person.""
I swallowed.
"But it doesn't.""
"It starts when someone decides they no longer need to be honest with you.""
The detective was quiet.
Then he asked:
"When did you last speak with your husband before tonight?""
"Approximately eleven thirty.""
"What was the conversation?""
"He said he had a late work meeting.""
"Did he seem different?""
I thought about it.
Julian's face.
His voice.
The way he avoided looking directly at me.
"Yes.""
"What was different?""
"He was nervous.""
"Nervous because of the meeting?""
"I don't know.""
The detective looked at his notes.
"Did he take anything with him?""
I frowned.
"What do you mean?""
"His phone. Laptop. Documents.""
"His phone.""
I paused.
"He never leaves without it.""
The detective exchanged a glance with his partner.
That caught my attention.
"What?""
Detective Reed reached into his folder.
"We found his phone.""
My heartbeat changed.
"Where?""
"At Ms. Hale's apartment.""
I said nothing.
"Mrs. Whitmore, his phone screen was damaged. But our technical team was able to access some information.""
A cold feeling moved through my body.
"What information?""
He hesitated.
"Messages.""
The hallway suddenly felt smaller.
"Between Julian and Serena?""
The detective didn't answer directly.
Which meant the answer was yes.
"What did they say?""
"We're still reviewing everything.""
"Detective.""
My voice became sharper.
"My husband almost died tonight.""
"I understand.""
"No.""
I looked at him.
"You understand there is an investigation. I understand there is a man in that room whose life depends on knowing what happened before he collapsed.""
The detective studied me.
Then he slowly handed me a printed document.
Not the phone.
Not the messages.
Just a summary.
"These are the timestamps of some recent communications.""
I looked down.
The first message was from Julian.
Three days earlier.
*We need to talk before she finds out.*
My fingers went cold.
The next message was from Serena.
*You promised me this would be over.*
Then Julian:
*I said I would handle it.*
My breathing slowed.
There was more.
A message from Serena.
*If Clara discovers the truth, everything falls apart.*
I stared at the words.
Everything falls apart.
What truth?
What had Julian been hiding?
The detective watched my reaction.
"You didn't know about these messages?""
I slowly shook my head.
"No.""
"Do you recognize what they might be referring to?""
"No.""
A lie.
Not because I knew.
But because a small part of me suddenly remembered something.
Something strange.
A conversation from months ago.
Julian had been in the shower.
His phone was on the kitchen table.
A message appeared.
A woman's name.
Serena.
I hadn't opened it.
I trusted him.
Later that night, he told me I was being paranoid.
He said Serena was just a coworker.
I believed him.
Because I loved him.
The detective's voice interrupted my thoughts.
"Mrs. Whitmore?""
I looked up.
"Yes?""
"Are you aware your husband was involved in a confidential company project?""
"Yes.""
"Are you aware that Ms. Hale was leading that project?""
"Yes.""
"Did you know the project was facing problems?""
I hesitated.
"No.""
The detective exchanged another look.
Something was happening.
Something bigger than an affair.
"What kind of problems?""
He looked at his notes.
"Financial irregularities.""
The words hit differently.
Financial.
Not personal.
Not romantic.
Something much more dangerous.
"Are you saying Julian was involved in something illegal?""
"I am saying we are investigating.""
The careful wording told me enough.
Julian's collapse was no longer just a medical mystery.
It was becoming something else.
A crime.
A betrayal.
A secret.
The hospital doors opened.
A nurse rushed out.
"Family of Julian Whitmore?""
Everyone turned.
Arthur immediately stepped forward.
"I'm his father.""
The nurse looked around.
"His condition has stabilized temporarily.""
A wave of relief moved through the hallway.
Even I felt it.
But then the nurse continued.
"However, we found something unusual.""
The relief disappeared.
"What?"" Teresa asked.
The nurse looked uncomfortable.
"During treatment, the medical team noticed signs that suggest his condition may not have been caused by natural factors alone.""
Everyone froze.
Arthur's face changed.
"What does that mean?""
The nurse glanced at me.
Then at the detective.
"It means the doctors recommend further testing.""
Further testing.
The phrase was gentle.
But everyone understood.
Something had been done to Julian.
Someone might have caused this.
Serena stepped backward.
Just one step.
But enough.
Detective Reed noticed.
So did I.
The detective turned toward her.
"Ms. Hale.""
She stopped.
"Yes?""
"I need to ask you some additional questions.""
Her face became pale.
"Why?""
"Because your apartment was the last known location where Mr. Whitmore was conscious.""
"I already explained what happened.""
"We need the explanation again.""
She looked at Arthur.
Then Teresa.
Then me.
And for the first time since I arrived at the hospital...
Serena looked completely alone.
The detective walked her toward a private waiting area.
Before she disappeared, she turned back.
Our eyes met.
There was no anger now.
No confidence.
Only fear.
And I knew that fear wasn't because Julian might die.
It was because Julian might wake up.
Because if Julian woke up...
He could tell us everything.
I stood there watching the door close behind her.
Then I looked at the document still in my hand.
*We need to talk before she finds out.*
I read that sentence again.
Before who finds out?
Before me?
Or before someone else?
My phone suddenly vibrated.
A message.
Unknown number.
My heart stopped.
I opened it.
There was only one sentence.
*You should have let him die.*
I stared at the screen.
The hospital sounds disappeared.
The lights blurred.
Someone was watching me.
Someone knew what I had done.
Someone knew I had stopped the surgery.
And someone was angry that Julian was still alive.
I looked around the hallway.
Everyone was there.
Arthur.
Teresa.
The doctors.
The nurses.
The detective.
Even Serena behind the closed door.
Anyone could have sent it.
And that was the terrifying part.
May you like
Because the person who wanted Julian gone...
Was much closer than I thought.
