Chapter 14: The Last Lie Arthur Whitmore Told
The sound of Julian hitting the floor was louder than the thunder outside.
For one terrifying second, nobody moved.
Not me.
Not Ethan.
Not even Arthur.
The entire world seemed to freeze around that single moment.
Then instinct took over.
I ran.
"Julian!""
I dropped beside him.
His face was pale.
Too pale.
My hands immediately moved toward the wound on his shirt.
Blood.
Not a lot.
But enough.
Enough to tell me someone had wanted him silent.
Again.
"He's been stabbed.""
Ethan's voice was shaking.
I looked up.
"Call emergency services.""
"We're inside an abandoned building.""
"I don't care.""
My voice became sharp.
"Call them.""
Ethan grabbed his phone.
I pressed my hand against Julian's wound.
The same hands that had once held a scalpel.
The same hands that had once saved strangers.
The same hands that had spent eight years believing they weren't good enough.
Tonight, they knew exactly what to do.
"Julian.""
His eyelids moved.
Barely.
"Stay with me.""
His lips moved.
I leaned closer.
"What?""
A whisper.
"Arthur...""
I looked around.
The hallway was empty.
Arthur was gone.
The flash drive was gone.
But Julian wasn't looking toward the door.
He was looking at me.
"Not Arthur.""
My heart stopped.
"What?""
His fingers weakly grabbed my sleeve.
"Not him.""
I stared at him.
"What are you saying?""
His breathing became uneven.
"Clara...""
"Don't talk.""
"No.""
His eyes opened slightly.
"You need to know.""
I pressed harder against the wound.
"Save your strength.""
But Julian shook his head.
"I saw him.""
"Who?""
His eyes moved toward Ethan.
And then back to me.
"The person who attacked me.""
The emergency lights flickered.
The old building seemed to hold its breath.
"Who?""
Julian swallowed.
"The person who has been behind everything.""
A cold feeling moved through me.
"Who?""
His lips parted.
Then the lights went out again.
A second later, a loud crash echoed from upstairs.
Ethan immediately stood.
"Someone is still here.""
I looked at him.
"Stay with Julian.""
"I'll check.""
"No.""
My voice was firm.
"You won't leave him.""
Ethan hesitated.
Then nodded.
Because he knew.
Julian had already been attacked twice.
We weren't making the same mistake again.
I looked toward the stairs.
Someone was upstairs.
Someone who had taken the flash drive.
Someone who had attacked Julian.
Someone who knew all our secrets.
I stood.
"Clara?""
Julian's weak voice stopped me.
I looked down.
"Don't go.""
The words surprised me.
Not because he said them.
Because of the fear behind them.
Not fear for himself.
Fear for me.
"I have to.""
"No.""
He coughed.
"Please.""
For years, Julian had always been the person who made decisions.
Who hid things.
Who protected me without asking.
But now, lying there helpless, he wasn't controlling anything.
He was just a man afraid of losing someone he loved.
I softened slightly.
"Julian.""
His eyes met mine.
"This ends tonight.""
Then I walked upstairs.
Every step felt heavier.
The old hospital had become a maze of memories.
A place where the past refused to stay buried.
The second floor was dark.
Empty rooms lined the hallway.
Old patient records.
Broken equipment.
Dust covering everything.
Then I heard something.
A drawer opening.
I followed the sound.
At the end of the hallway was an old records room.
The door was slightly open.
I pushed it.
Inside...
Someone was searching through files.
"Stop.""
The person froze.
Slowly turned.
And my entire body went cold.
"Serena.""
She looked at me.
Her face was filled with exhaustion.
Not surprise.
Like she had expected me.
"What are you doing here?""
She didn't answer.
I stepped closer.
"The flash drive.""
Her expression changed.
"Where is it?""
"Clara...""
"No.""
My voice hardened.
"Not tonight.""
She looked down.
"I was trying to stop this.""
I almost laughed.
"Everyone says that.""
She looked hurt.
But I didn't care.
Not anymore.
Everyone had explanations.
Everyone had reasons.
Everyone had secrets.
And I was done being the person who suffered because other people were afraid.
"Did you attack Julian?""
Her eyes widened.
"No.""
The answer came instantly.
Too instantly.
"Then tell me the truth.""
She looked away.
"I took the flash drive.""
My stomach tightened.
"Why?""
"Because it wasn't safe.""
"From who?""
She didn't answer.
"Serena.""
Finally, she whispered:
"From Arthur.""
I stared at her.
"Arthur is gone.""
"No.""
She shook her head.
"You still don't understand.""
"What don't I understand?""
She stepped closer.
"Arthur wasn't the one controlling everything.""
The hallway became silent.
"What?""
Serena opened her bag.
She pulled out a second flash drive.
Not the one Arthur had.
A different one.
"Julian found something bigger than his father's fraud.""
I looked at it.
"What?""
She looked at me.
"The accident wasn't caused by Arthur alone.""
My heart tightened.
"What are you saying?""
"The medical system failure.""
She swallowed.
"Someone manipulated it.""
I remembered Ethan's words.
Julian.
The company.
The software.
But Serena continued.
"Arthur wanted to hide the scandal.""
"Yes.""
"But someone else wanted him to.""
A chill moved through me.
"Who?""
Serena looked toward the door.
Like she was afraid someone could hear.
"Someone inside the hospital.""
My mind raced.
"The hospital?""
She nodded.
"The person who changed your records.""
The person who destroyed my life.
The person who made me believe I was guilty.
"Who?""
Serena looked at me.
And whispered:
"Ethan.""
The world stopped.
"No.""
"I know what you're thinking.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
"You trust him because he looks guilty.""
"He admitted his mistake.""
"Exactly.""
I stared at her.
"What does that mean?""
Serena's expression became serious.
"It means he admitted enough to make himself look innocent.""
I felt sick.
"No.""
She handed me the flash drive.
"Watch it.""
My hands hesitated.
Then I plugged it into the old computer on the desk.
A video appeared.
Security footage.
Eight years old.
The hospital.
The night everything happened.
I watched.
A younger Ethan entered the emergency department.
Carrying a folder.
Then Arthur appeared.
They spoke.
I couldn't hear the audio.
But their expressions were clear.
They were not arguing.
They were planning.
My heart started pounding.
Then another person entered.
Someone I recognized.
Julian.
But younger.
Terrified.
The three men stood together.
Then the footage ended.
I stared at the screen.
"What was that?""
Serena looked at me.
"The reason Julian spent eight years trying to expose the truth.""
I shook my head.
"But Ethan said—"
"He lied.""
The room spun.
"No.""
Serena stepped closer.
"Clara.""
Her voice softened.
"You have to accept something.""
"What?""
"Everyone in this story has been hiding something.""
The sentence hurt because it was true.
My husband.
His father.
His mother.
Ethan.
Serena.
Everyone.
Except me.
The person everyone thought was broken.
The person everyone controlled.
The person everyone lied to.
I looked at the video again.
"Where is Ethan?""
Serena's face changed.
"Why?""
"Because I need to ask him.""
Before she could answer, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
I answered.
No one spoke.
Only breathing.
Then:
"You finally understand.""
My blood ran cold.
"Ethan?""
A quiet laugh.
"No.""
The voice changed.
Older.
Calmer.
Familiar.
"Arthur.""
Serena stepped back.
I put the phone on speaker.
"Where are you?""
"You still think this is about catching someone.""
"What do you want?""
A pause.
Then:
"I want you to understand why.""
I clenched my jaw.
"Why what?""
"Why I had to erase your past.""
My body froze.
"You erased my past.""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
Silence.
Then Arthur said:
"Because your sister knew the truth.""
I stopped breathing.
"About what?""
"About who really caused the accident.""
My heart raced.
"Who?""
Arthur's voice became quieter.
"Your sister didn't die because of a medical error.""
The world went still.
"She died because she discovered what Julian did.""
My hands trembled.
"You're lying.""
"Ask him.""
"Ask Julian what he did before the accident.""
The call ended.
I stood frozen.
Serena looked at me.
Neither of us spoke.
Because once again...
A new truth had appeared.
Another layer.
Another secret.
Another betrayal.
I ran downstairs.
Julian was awake.
Barely.
But awake.
His eyes found mine.
And immediately...
He knew.
He knew what I had heard.
"What did you do?""
The question came out before I could stop it.
Pain crossed his face.
Not confusion.
Not anger.
Recognition.
"Clara...""
"What did you do eight years ago?""
Silence.
Then Julian closed his eyes.
And whispered:
"I made a choice.""
My heart sank.
"What choice?""
His voice broke.
"The choice that killed your sister.""
The room went silent.
May you like
And for the first time all night...
I didn't know whether I wanted the truth anymore.
