Chapter 9: The Choice Between Blood and Loyalty

The accusation remained in the air.

Daniel Whitmore was assigned to protect Ethan.

But he was also assigned to watch him.

The words felt heavier than any weapon.

Ethan stared at his father, searching for something.

A denial.

An explanation.

A reason.

Anything.

But Daniel said nothing.

And that silence hurt more than the truth.

“Tell me it isn’t true.””

Ethan’s voice was barely above a whisper.

Daniel looked at him.

“Ethan…”

“No.””

He stepped back.

“Don’t use my name like that.””

The pain on Daniel’s face was obvious.

But Ethan was no longer sure what pain meant.

He had spent his entire life believing he understood his father.

The strict rules.

The discipline.

The expectations.

He thought those things came from love.

Now he wondered if they came from an assignment.

A responsibility.

A mission.

“You were watching me?””

Daniel took a slow breath.

“At first.””

The answer was devastating.

“At first?””

Ethan’s anger grew.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked down.

“When Arthur gave me the assignment, I believed I was protecting you.””

“But you were reporting on me.””

“Yes.””

Ethan shook his head.

“How?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

“How did you report on a child?””

“I didn’t.””

“Then what?””

Daniel looked at him.

“I stopped.””

“When?””

“The first night I met you.””

Ethan froze.

Daniel continued.

“You were three years old.””

The room became silent.

“You were sitting alone in a hospital room.””

Ethan listened despite himself.

“Your parents had disappeared. You had no idea what was happening. You didn’t understand why everyone around you looked afraid.””

Daniel’s voice softened.

“I was supposed to observe you.””

A pause.

“But I couldn’t.””

“Why?””

“Because you weren’t a mission.””

Ethan looked away.

Daniel continued.

“You were a child.””

The words carried emotion Ethan had never heard from his father.

“You reached for my hand.””

Daniel swallowed.

“And at that moment, I made a decision.””

“What decision?””

“To stop being Arthur’s soldier.””

Ethan looked at him.

“And become my father?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

The answer should have comforted him.

It didn’t.

Because there was still a missing piece.

“You still lied.””

Daniel accepted it.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because every person who knew about you became a target.””

Adrian interrupted.

“That’s not the whole truth.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Enough.””

“No.””

Adrian stepped closer.

“Ethan deserves all of it.””

Marcus watched them carefully.

“You’re enjoying this.””

Adrian looked at him.

“No.””

His expression changed.

“I’m trying to make sure he survives.””

Ethan looked between them.

“Everyone keeps saying they’re protecting me.””

He laughed quietly.

“But somehow, every protection came with a lie.””

Nobody answered.

Because nobody could argue.

A sudden movement outside caught Marcus’s attention.

He looked toward the window.

“They’re closer.””

Daniel immediately became alert.

“How long?””

“Not long.””

Laura looked terrified.

“Who is coming?””

Daniel answered quietly.

“Arthur.””

The name alone changed everything.

Ethan felt something strange.

He had spent his entire life knowing Arthur as a grandfather.

A man who gave him gifts.

A man who taught him chess.

A man who told him stories about courage.

Now every memory felt corrupted.

“Did he ever love me?””

The question surprised everyone.

Ethan looked at Daniel.

“Did Arthur ever love me?””

Daniel had no easy answer.

Finally:

“I don’t know.””

That hurt more than anything.

Adrian looked down.

“Arthur was not incapable of love.””

Everyone looked at him.

“He was incapable of choosing love over his beliefs.””

Ethan stared.

“That sounds like something you’ve thought about.””

Adrian nodded.

“Because I knew him longer than anyone.””

“How?””

Adrian looked at the old photograph.

“Because Arthur was my mentor.””

The room went silent.

“You worked for him?””

“Yes.””

“And then?””

“I discovered what he was doing.””

“What did you do?””

Adrian’s face hardened.

“I tried to stop him.””

Marcus looked at him.

“By helping Arthur’s enemies?””

Adrian didn’t respond.

Ethan noticed.

“There’s more.””

Daniel nodded.

“There always is.””

Before Ethan could ask, the secure device activated.

A voice came through.

Everyone froze.

A calm voice.

An older voice.

A familiar voice.

“Daniel.””

Ethan’s blood turned cold.

Arthur.

Daniel grabbed the device.

“Arthur.””

The room became silent.

The voice continued.

“You have made this far more difficult than necessary.””

Daniel’s face tightened.

“You’re alive.””

A quiet laugh.

“You sound disappointed.””

“You manipulated everyone.””

“No.””

Arthur’s voice remained calm.

“I guided them.””

Ethan stepped closer.

“Grandfather?””

There was a pause.

Then:

“Ethan.””

Hearing his name from that voice made him uncomfortable.

“You’ve grown.””

Ethan felt anger rise.

“You’ve been watching me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because you are important.””

“I’m not a project.””

Another pause.

Arthur replied:

“No.””

A moment of silence.

“You are much more than that.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Leave him alone.””

Arthur’s tone changed slightly.

“Still protecting him.””

“Yes.””

“You disappoint me, Daniel.””

Daniel looked at the device.

“I stopped being your soldier a long time ago.””

“No.””

Arthur’s voice became colder.

“You stopped following orders.””

A pause.

“But you never stopped being mine.””

The words struck Daniel.

Ethan noticed.

There was history there.

A wound that never healed.

“What do you want?””

Daniel asked.

Arthur answered:

“What I always wanted.””

A pause.

“My family.””

Nobody spoke.

Ethan felt disgust.

“You call this family?””

Arthur ignored him.

“You were always special, Ethan.””

“I’m not yours.””

“You don’t understand.””

“I understand enough.””

Arthur continued calmly.

“You think your parents protected you from me.””

A pause.

“They didn’t.””

Ethan froze.

“What?””

“They protected you from the truth.””

Daniel immediately reacted.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Arthur laughed.

“That’s exactly what he would say.””

Ethan looked at Daniel.

“What truth?””

Daniel’s face changed.

Arthur answered:

“Your parents did not discover the program.””

A pause.

“They created it.””

The room went silent.

Ethan felt like the ground disappeared.

“No.””

Arthur continued.

“They believed they were building a better future.””

Daniel shouted:

“Enough!””

Arthur ignored him.

“But when they realized what they created, they wanted to destroy it.””

Ethan looked at Adrian.

Nobody moved.

“Is that true?””

Adrian looked away.

That was enough.

Ethan felt betrayed all over again.

“My parents…”

Daniel spoke quietly.

“They were involved in the research.””

Ethan looked at him.

“And you knew?””

“Yes.””

The pain became too much.

“Everyone knew.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

“But enough people.””

Silence.

Arthur’s voice returned.

“Come to me, Ethan.””

Daniel immediately said:

“No.””

Arthur continued.

“You deserve to know who you are.””

Ethan stared at the device.

“I know who I am.””

Arthur replied:

“Do you?””

A pause.

“Then why do you have your father’s instincts?””

Ethan froze.

“Why do you solve problems before people ask?””

Silence.

“Why do you read people before they speak?””

Ethan felt uncomfortable.

Because some of it was true.

Arthur continued.

“Because your parents gave you a gift.””

Daniel looked horrified.

“A gift?””

Arthur answered:

“An ability.””

Ethan shook his head.

“No.””

Arthur’s voice softened.

“You can deny it.””

A pause.

“But you cannot deny yourself.””

The signal ended.

Nobody spoke.

The house felt empty.

Finally, Marcus said:

“He wants you to come to him.””

Ethan looked at him.

“Yes.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“And you won’t.””

Ethan looked at his father.

For the first time, he saw something clearly.

Daniel wasn’t afraid of losing control.

He was afraid of losing Ethan.

“Dad.””

Daniel stopped.

“I need answers.””

“I know.””

“And Arthur has them.””

Daniel looked away.

“I know.””

Ethan picked up the photograph from the table.

The one showing his parents.

The one showing his grandfather watching.

“I’m going.””

Everyone reacted immediately.

“No.””

Daniel’s voice was firm.

But Ethan shook his head.

“You spent my whole life making decisions for me.””

A pause.

“Now I make one.””

Daniel looked at him.

“I won’t let you walk into a trap.””

Ethan looked at Marcus.

Then Adrian.

Then back at his father.

“Maybe it is a trap.””

He held the photograph tightly.

“But it’s the only place where the truth is.””

Daniel knew he couldn’t stop him.

Because he recognized that look.

The same determination Ethan had inherited.

The same stubbornness.

The same refusal to surrender.

Finally, Daniel whispered:

“Then I’m coming with you.””

Ethan looked surprised.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked at his son.

“Because I failed your parents.””

A pause.

“I won’t fail you.””

Outside, engines approached.

Multiple vehicles.

The final confrontation had begun.

Arthur Whitmore was waiting.

And this time, Ethan would not arrive as a secret.

May you like

He would arrive as the one person who could destroy everything Arthur built.

Or become the final piece of his plan.
