Chapter 8: The Man Who Carried the Forgotten Truth
Ethan stood frozen in the hallway.
The stranger’s voice echoed through the house.
Not because it was loud.
Because everyone recognized it.
Daniel Whitmore’s face had changed completely.
The confidence.
The control.
The authority.
Gone.
For the first time, Ethan saw his father look at someone else like he was afraid.
Not cautious.
Not suspicious.
Afraid.
“Adrian,” Daniel whispered.
The man stepped fully into the light.
Colonel Adrian Cross looked nothing like the photographs.
The man Ethan had seen on the old mission picture had been younger, sharper, almost untouchable.
This version looked tired.
Older.
His hair was gray, and his face carried the marks of years spent hiding.
But his eyes remained the same.
Cold.
Focused.
Calculating.
Marcus immediately moved in front of Ethan.
Daniel noticed.
“You still protect him.””
Marcus did not look away from Adrian.
“Someone has to.””
Adrian gave a small smile.
“That’s always been your problem, Marcus.””
“What?””
“You confuse protecting people with changing the outcome.””
The words carried history.
Pain.
Regret.
Ethan looked between them.
“You’re Adrian Cross.””
The man looked at him.
“So Arthur told you about me.””
Ethan felt his anger rise.
“You knew my grandfather?””
Adrian smiled faintly.
“Everyone knew Arthur Whitmore.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“No.””
Adrian looked around the room.
“But answers are exactly why I’m here.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
Adrian looked at him.
“You said that ten years ago.””
The silence that followed was heavy.
Ethan noticed something.
Daniel wasn’t denying anything.
“What happened between you three?””
Adrian looked at Ethan.
“Your father has spent years telling you that Marcus disappeared because of a mission.””
Ethan nodded.
“He said the mission failed.””
Adrian looked at Daniel.
“Your father always knew how to make failure sound honorable.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Careful.””
Adrian ignored him.
“The mission did fail.””
He paused.
“But not the way you think.””
Ethan crossed his arms.
“Then explain.””
Adrian looked at him for a long moment.
“You have your mother’s eyes.””
The comment caught Ethan off guard.
“You knew my mother?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Adrian’s expression changed slightly.
“Because she was the smartest person in that entire operation.””
Daniel looked away.
Ethan noticed.
“What operation?””
Adrian walked slowly into the room.
“The operation that destroyed your family.””
Laura stepped forward.
“Why are you here?””
Adrian looked at her.
“Because I’m tired of watching everyone carry pieces of the truth.””
He placed the old photograph he was holding on the table.
Ethan looked down.
It was the same photograph from his childhood.
His biological parents beside him.
But there was something strange.
A fourth person appeared in the background.
A man standing behind them.
Arthur Whitmore.
Watching.
Always watching.
“Your grandfather wasn’t just involved,” Adrian said.
“He was monitoring everything.””
Ethan looked at Daniel.
“You knew?””
Daniel’s silence answered.
Again.
“You knew he was watching my parents?””
“Yes.””
“And you did nothing?””
Daniel’s voice was quiet.
“I tried.””
Adrian laughed.
A bitter laugh.
“You tried.””
The anger in his voice surprised Ethan.
“You always say that.””
Daniel stepped toward him.
“Because it’s true.””
“No.””
Adrian shook his head.
“Because it makes you feel better.””
The words hit Daniel harder than any accusation before.
Marcus looked at Adrian.
“You’re here because of Arthur.””
“Yes.””
“You found him.””
Everyone froze.
Ethan looked at Marcus.
“Found who?””
Adrian answered.
“Arthur.””
The room became silent.
“You mean my grandfather is alive?””
Adrian nodded.
Ethan felt the same shock again.
“How?””
“Because he never died.””
Daniel stared at Adrian.
“I saw the records.””
“Fake.””
“I attended the funeral.””
“Staged.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
Adrian looked directly at him.
“You know better than anyone that paperwork can be manipulated.””
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone knew he was right.
Ethan felt overwhelmed.
His entire family history had become a maze of lies.
“Where is he?””
Adrian looked at him.
“That’s why I’m here.””
Daniel immediately reacted.
“No.””
Adrian turned.
“You don’t get to decide anymore.””
Daniel’s voice became sharp.
“Stay away from him.””
“Why?””
Adrian pointed at Ethan.
“Because you think hiding the truth protects him?””
A pause.
“You already tried that.””
Ethan stepped forward.
“Stop talking around me.””
Everyone looked at him.
“I’m tired of being the person everyone discusses.””
His voice became firm.
“I want the truth.””
Adrian studied him.
“You’re more like Arthur than your father.””
The comment angered Ethan.
“I’m nothing like him.””
Adrian’s expression softened slightly.
“That’s exactly what he wanted.””
“What?””
“He wanted you to believe you were ordinary.””
Ethan froze.
“What does that mean?””
Adrian looked at Daniel.
“Tell him.””
Daniel said nothing.
“Tell him what his parents discovered.””
The silence returned.
Ethan looked at his father.
“Dad.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
Then he finally spoke.
“Your parents discovered Arthur’s final project.””
“What project?””
“A system.””
Ethan frowned.
“What kind of system?””
“One designed to identify and control threats before they happened.””
“That sounds like intelligence work.””
“No.””
Daniel looked at him.
“It went beyond intelligence.””
Marcus added:
“It used people.””
Ethan listened.
“People?””
“Families,” Marcus said.
“Soldiers.””
“Children.””
The last word made Ethan uncomfortable.
“Children?””
Adrian looked at him.
“Children with specific backgrounds.””
Daniel immediately interrupted.
“Enough.””
But Adrian continued.
“Children who could be shaped into something.””
Ethan felt cold.
“Why are you looking at me?””
Nobody answered.
Then Adrian said:
“Because you were one of them.””
The words felt impossible.
“No.””
Ethan shook his head.
“No.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Ethan—”
“Don’t.””
His voice broke.
“Don’t tell me this is another thing you hid.””
Daniel stopped.
Adrian looked at him.
“He doesn’t know?””
“No.””
Adrian laughed quietly.
“Of course.””
Ethan looked at Daniel.
“What does he mean?””
Daniel struggled.
“The program wasn’t completed.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
“You were exposed to it.””
Ethan stared.
“What?””
“When you were young.””
“No.””
Daniel looked devastated.
“I thought it was harmless.””
The sentence destroyed him.
“You thought?””
Ethan stepped back.
“You experimented on me?””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice became desperate.
“No. Never.””
“Then explain.””
Adrian answered.
“Your parents found out Arthur was using children from military families, intelligence families, and influential families.””
“To do what?””
“To create perfect loyalty.””
The room became silent.
Ethan felt sick.
“And me?””
Adrian looked at him.
“Your parents discovered you were one of the subjects.””
Daniel immediately said:
“Not a subject.””
Everyone looked at him.
Daniel’s voice shook.
“You were a child.””
A painful silence followed.
“I got you out.””
Ethan stared.
“You saved me?””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because Arthur was still looking for you.””
Ethan looked at Adrian.
“And now?””
Adrian looked toward the window.
“Now he knows where you are.””
A sudden sound interrupted them.
A distant explosion.
Not close.
But close enough.
Everyone froze.
Daniel immediately moved toward the window.
“Everyone down.””
The house shook slightly.
Laura grabbed Ethan’s arm.
“What’s happening?””
Daniel looked outside.
Smoke rose in the distance.
Then his secure device activated.
A message appeared.
Daniel read it.
His face changed.
“What?””
Ethan asked.
Daniel handed him the device.
The message was simple.
Bring me the boy.
Below it was a location.
And a name.
Arthur Whitmore.
Ethan looked up.
“He wants me.””
Daniel took the device back.
“No.””
Adrian looked at him.
“Yes.””
A pause.
“That was always the plan.””
Marcus stared at Adrian.
“You knew.””
Adrian nodded.
“I knew the moment Ethan was born.””
Everyone turned.
Ethan felt his heart stop.
“What?””
Adrian looked at him.
“The truth is…”
He glanced at Daniel.
“Your father didn’t find you by accident.””
Ethan looked at Daniel.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel said nothing.
Because this time, there was no defense.
No explanation.
No excuse.
Only the truth waiting.
Adrian finished the sentence.
“Daniel Whitmore was assigned to protect you.””
A pause.
“But Arthur assigned him to watch you.””
Ethan stared at his father.
May you like
And for the first time, he wondered if the man who saved his life…
had also been the person closest to the secret that destroyed it.
