Chapter 4: The Enemy Behind the Uniform

The sound of the vehicle outside changed everything.

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

The Whitmore home, the place Ethan had always considered the safest place in the world, suddenly felt unfamiliar.

The walls that held family photographs and memories now felt like they were hiding secrets.

The windows that once looked out over peaceful streets now looked like possible entry points.

Ethan watched his father carefully.

Daniel Whitmore was a man who had faced impossible situations.

He had stood in dangerous places.

He had made decisions that affected lives.

He had walked into rooms where everyone else was afraid to enter.

But Ethan had never seen him react like this.

Not when Marcus appeared.

Not when the truth about the mission was revealed.

Only now.

Only after that phone call.

“Dad,” Ethan said quietly.

“Who is outside?””

Daniel did not answer immediately.

Instead, he moved toward the kitchen counter and picked up a small object hidden beneath a stack of papers.

Ethan recognized it instantly.

A secure communication device.

His father had never brought military equipment into the house before.

Not openly.

Not where the family could see it.

“Mom,” Daniel said.

Laura looked at him.

“Take Ethan upstairs.””

Ethan immediately shook his head.

“No.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Ethan.””

“No. Every time something dangerous happens, you tell me to leave the room.””

His voice grew stronger.

“And every time I leave, I learn later that everyone lied to me.””

The words struck harder than he intended.

Laura looked down.

Daniel remained silent.

Because he knew his son was right.

Marcus stood near the window, watching the street.

“There are two vehicles.””

Daniel turned.

“You’re sure?””

“Yes.””

“How many people?””

“I can’t see.””

Marcus moved away from the window.

“But whoever they are, they’re not here to talk.””

Ethan looked between them.

“You both keep saying ‘they.’”

Nobody answered.

“Who are they?””

Daniel’s expression became serious.

“People who believe some secrets are worth killing for.””

The answer sent a chill through the room.

Before Ethan could ask another question, the lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then the entire house went dark.

Laura gasped.

Daniel immediately moved.

“Everyone away from the windows.””

The command was automatic.

The general had taken over.

Ethan followed his father’s instructions, but his mind was racing.

This was no longer a family argument.

No longer a mystery.

Something real was happening.

Something dangerous.

The quiet neighborhood outside had disappeared into darkness.

No porch lights.

No street lamps.

Nothing.

Only shadows.

Marcus moved beside Daniel.

“You knew this would happen.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“I knew it was possible.””

“No.””

Marcus looked at him.

“You knew they were watching.””

Daniel didn’t deny it.

Ethan heard those words.

“They were watching us?””

Daniel looked away.

And that answer was enough.

“You knew?””

Ethan’s voice cracked.

“You knew someone was watching our family?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

Ethan stared at him.

“By not telling me?””

Daniel looked like he wanted to respond.

But he couldn’t.

Because there was no easy answer.

A sound came from outside.

A faint movement.

Someone near the house.

Marcus immediately raised his hand.

Everyone froze.

Then came a knock.

Three slow knocks.

Not aggressive.

Not rushed.

Almost polite.

That somehow made it worse.

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“Stay back.””

Marcus’s expression hardened.

“You think I’m letting you face him alone?””

“Him?””

Ethan repeated.

“Who is him?””

Daniel ignored the question.

He walked toward the front door.

Laura grabbed his arm.

“Daniel.””

He looked at her.

“If this goes wrong—”

“Don’t say that.””

Her voice broke.

For the first time, Ethan saw fear between his parents.

Not disagreement.

Not anger.

Fear.

Daniel gently removed her hand.

“I need you to trust me.””

Laura looked at him.

“That’s difficult when I don’t know what I’m trusting.””

A painful silence followed.

Then Daniel opened the door.

Nobody stood outside.

Only an envelope sitting on the porch.

Ethan felt confused.

Daniel stepped forward carefully and picked it up.

Marcus immediately reacted.

“Don’t open it.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because that’s what they want.””

Daniel examined the envelope.

No name.

No markings.

Just like the one he had left for Ethan.

But this time, there was something written on the back.

A single sentence.

You should have finished the job.

Daniel’s face changed.

Marcus saw it.

“He’s here.””

Ethan looked at them.

“Who?””

Daniel slowly opened the envelope.

Inside was another photograph.

He unfolded it.

And immediately went silent.

Marcus stepped closer.

“What is it?””

Daniel did not answer.

Ethan moved forward.

“Let me see.””

His father hesitated.

Then handed him the photograph.

Ethan looked down.

His blood ran cold.

It was a picture of Daniel, Marcus, and another man.

A man Ethan had never seen before.

But his father had.

Because the person standing beside them was wearing the same uniform.

The same military insignia.

The same expression of confidence.

On the back of the photo was a name.

Colonel Adrian Cross.

Ethan looked up.

“Who is he?””

Daniel’s face became unreadable.

“Someone who should have been exposed years ago.””

Marcus looked at the photograph.

“He was the reason we were sent there.””

Ethan frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus answered.

“Adrian Cross wasn’t just another officer.””

Daniel finished the sentence.

“He was the person who controlled the operation.””

The realization hit Ethan.

“So he knew what happened.””

“Yes,” Daniel said.

“And he lied?””

Daniel looked at the photo.

“Yes.””

The word carried years of pain.

Then Marcus spoke.

“He didn’t just lie.””

Everyone looked at him.

“He made sure nobody could ever tell the truth.””

A cold silence filled the room.

Ethan stared at the photograph.

A military officer.

A respected figure.

Someone who probably appeared honorable to everyone around him.

Yet behind that image was something darker.

“How is he connected to you now?””

Daniel folded the photograph.

“Because he knows Marcus is alive.””

“And?””

“And because if Marcus is alive, the truth can come out.””

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“You mean your truth.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“No.””

His voice became firm.

“Our truth.””

For a moment, the two men looked at each other.

The anger was still there.

The betrayal was still there.

But beneath it was something else.

A shared understanding.

They both knew the danger was larger than their personal conflict.

Ethan’s phone suddenly vibrated.

Everyone turned.

He looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

A message.

His hands became cold.

“Who is it?”” Laura asked.

Ethan didn’t answer.

Daniel stepped closer.

“What does it say?””

Ethan opened the message.

Only one sentence appeared.

Your father taught you to protect secrets. Now learn what secrets cost.

Below the message was an attachment.

A video.

Ethan looked at his father.

Daniel’s face changed when he saw the screen.

“What?””

Ethan pressed play.

The video began.

A dark room.

A chair.

A person sitting with their back facing the camera.

Then a voice.

A voice that none of them recognized.

“Daniel Whitmore.””

The recording continued.

“You spent ten years pretending you made the right choice.””

A pause.

“You didn’t.””

The person in the chair slowly turned.

Ethan stopped breathing.

Because the person on the screen was not Adrian Cross.

It was someone else.

Someone who should not have been involved.

Someone connected to their family.

Someone Ethan knew.

The video ended.

The screen went black.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Ethan whispered:

“Dad…”

Daniel looked at him.

“What?””

Ethan lifted his phone.

“The person in the video…”

His voice shook.

“Was Grandpa.””

The room froze.

Because Ethan’s grandfather had been dead for eight years.

May you like

And somehow…

he had just appeared in a message that was meant to destroy them.
