Chapter 9: The Person Behind the Curtain
The hallway outside the server room became completely silent.
Even the fire alarm seemed distant.
Vanessa's words remained in the air.
*Someone inside the CEO's office.*
Everyone looked at Michael.
Not because they believed he was guilty.
Because they understood what it meant.
The person closest to the CEO had been closest to the information.
Michael's assistant.
His advisors.
His executive staff.
Someone who knew every meeting.
Every decision.
Every document.
Thomas studied Vanessa carefully.
"You said you know who.""
Vanessa nodded.
"I do.""
Michael stepped forward.
"Then say the name.""
Vanessa looked down.
For the first time since Thomas had met her, she looked genuinely ashamed.
"I didn't know at first.""
Nobody interrupted.
"I thought Richard was controlling everything.""
She looked at the burning server room.
"I thought I was helping him pressure the board into approving restructuring.""
Thomas watched her.
"And then?""
Vanessa swallowed.
"Then I started noticing things.""
"What things?""
"Information.""
She looked at Michael.
"Private information.""
Michael's expression changed.
"What kind of information?""
"Things only your office should have known.""
David stepped closer.
"Such as?""
Vanessa looked at Thomas.
"The moment you were hired.""
Thomas said nothing.
She continued.
"Richard knew you were coming before your contract was finalized.""
Michael frowned.
"Impossible.""
"No.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"I thought so too.""
She looked toward the elevator.
"Until I saw the emails.""
Michael's face hardened.
"What emails?""
"The ones between Richard and someone from your office.""
The hallway went quiet again.
Thomas felt something click.
The answer had been close the entire time.
Someone had always been one step ahead.
Someone knew what documents he was reviewing.
Someone knew what questions he would ask.
Someone knew when to plant evidence.
Michael looked at Vanessa.
"Who?""
She closed her eyes.
"Claire.""
David immediately reacted.
"Claire Whitmore?""
Michael's chief of staff.
The woman who had worked beside Michael for eleven years.
The woman who managed his calendar.
His communications.
His private meetings.
Michael stared.
"No.""
Vanessa nodded slowly.
"Yes.""
Michael looked genuinely shaken.
"Claire would never.""
Thomas interrupted.
"Why?""
Michael turned toward him.
"Because she has been with me since before Sterling became what it is today.""
Thomas nodded.
"That doesn't answer the question.""
Michael went silent.
Thomas continued.
"Long-term employees are often trusted because nobody thinks to question them.""
Vanessa looked at Michael.
"She was the only person who knew you hired Thomas before the announcement.""
Michael looked away.
David asked, "How do you know?""
Vanessa hesitated.
"Because I asked her.""
Everyone looked at her.
"When?""
"The day before Thomas arrived.""
Thomas frowned.
"Why?""
Vanessa looked embarrassed.
"Because Richard wanted to know what kind of person you were.""
"And Claire told him?""
Vanessa nodded.
"She told him everything.""
Michael walked toward the elevator.
"We need to find her.""
Thomas stopped him.
"No.""
Michael turned.
"No?""
"If she knows we're coming, she runs.""
Michael looked frustrated.
"Then what do you suggest?""
Thomas looked at Vanessa.
"You said you saw emails.""
Vanessa nodded.
"Yes.""
"Where?""
"Claire's assistant account.""
David looked confused.
"How would you access that?""
Vanessa looked down.
"I shouldn't have.""
Thomas understood.
She had been spying too.
Vanessa saw his expression.
"I was suspicious.""
"Of Claire?""
"Of everyone.""
Thomas almost smiled.
"That's new.""
She ignored the comment.
"I found a folder.""
"What folder?""
"Project Harbor.""
The same name.
Thomas's expression changed.
"Where is it?""
"On Claire's encrypted drive.""
Michael stared.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Vanessa looked at him.
"Because I thought Richard was behind everything.""
"And now?""
She looked toward the server room.
"Now I think Richard was only one piece.""
Thomas nodded.
That made sense.
Richard had influence.
Money.
Connections.
But he didn't have the one thing needed to manipulate every move inside Sterling Global.
Information.
Claire had that.
The group moved quickly toward the executive floor.
Security followed.
When the elevator doors opened, Thomas immediately noticed something strange.
The office was empty.
Too empty.
It was the middle of the afternoon.
The executive floor was usually filled with assistants, managers, and employees.
Now, everyone was gone.
Michael looked around.
"Where is everyone?""
David checked his phone.
"No messages.""
Thomas walked toward Claire's office.
The door was open.
Inside, everything looked normal.
Too normal.
Claire's desk was perfectly organized.
Her computer was closed.
Her chair pushed in.
Thomas looked around.
"She's not running.""
Michael frowned.
"What?""
"If she knew we were coming, she would have taken something.""
Thomas walked closer to the desk.
"Unless she wants us to find it.""
Michael looked alarmed.
"Don't touch anything.""
Thomas stopped.
Good.
Michael was finally thinking like an investigator.
Security photographed the room.
Then opened Claire's computer.
Password required.
Michael stepped forward.
"I know it.""
He entered the password.
The screen unlocked.
Thomas watched him.
"What?""
Michael looked uncomfortable.
"It's her work password.""
"You knew it?""
"She handled my schedule.""
Thomas nodded.
"And that's exactly why she was dangerous.""
The files appeared.
Hundreds.
Emails.
Documents.
Reports.
Then one folder.
Project Harbor.
Nobody spoke.
Michael opened it.
Inside were communications dating back eight months.
Richard Cole.
Vanessa Blake.
Ethan Cole.
And Claire Whitmore.
Thomas read the messages.
At first, they looked ordinary.
Planning.
Strategy.
Asset discussions.
Then he found the first shocking email.
From Claire.
To Richard.
*Michael is resisting the Lakewood recommendation. Additional pressure may be required.*
Thomas looked at Michael.
Michael said nothing.
Another email.
*The new consultant has been selected. He will expose the reporting issues if directed properly.*
David frowned.
"Directed?""
Thomas kept reading.
The next message was from Claire.
*Thomas Reed is exactly the type we need. Experienced. Predictable. He will follow inconsistencies.*
Michael stared.
Thomas felt cold.
The entire plan had been built around him.
Not because they underestimated him.
Because they understood him.
Another email appeared.
*Once Reed uncovers the false reporting, we move blame toward his unauthorized investigation.*
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Thomas continued.
The final email in the chain was the most important.
It was sent three days before his arrival.
From Claire.
*After Reed is removed, Michael will have no choice but to approve Harbor.*
Michael stepped back.
"What does that mean?""
Thomas looked at him.
"It means you were the final obstacle.""
Michael stared at the screen.
Claire wasn't trying to help Richard take over.
She was trying to remove Michael.
David whispered, "Why?""
Thomas kept scrolling.
Then he found it.
A hidden ownership agreement.
Claire Whitmore.
Beneficiary of a private investment trust.
Connected to Cole Strategic Holdings.
The room went silent.
Michael looked devastated.
"Eleven years.""
No one spoke.
"Eleven years she worked beside me.""
Thomas looked at him.
"And you trusted her.""
Michael nodded slowly.
"Yes.""
Thomas closed the file.
"That's why she was valuable.""
A sound came from the hallway.
Everyone turned.
A woman stood there.
Claire.
She held a small bag.
And she wasn't surprised to see them.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Claire smiled.
"I was wondering how long it would take you.""
Michael stared at her.
"Why?""
Her smile faded.
"Because someone had to make the company better.""
Thomas looked at the bag.
"Leaving?""
Claire shrugged.
"Preparing.""
Security stepped forward.
She didn't resist.
Instead, she looked directly at Thomas.
"You were the only variable I couldn't predict.""
Thomas nodded.
"That's why you tried to control the story.""
Claire smiled faintly.
"You were supposed to find the numbers.""
"I did.""
"You were supposed to expose Vanessa.""
"I did.""
"You were supposed to become the reason Michael had to approve Harbor.""
Thomas looked at her.
"But I didn't.""
Claire's expression hardened.
"No.""
She looked toward Michael.
"Because you got lucky.""
Michael stared.
"Was anything real?""
Claire looked at him.
"What?""
"Any of it?""
For a moment, her expression softened.
Then it disappeared.
"No.""
That answer hurt more than anger.
Michael looked away.
Security escorted her toward the elevator.
Before leaving, Claire turned back.
"Mr. Reed.""
Thomas looked at her.
"You think you won.""
"No.""
Claire smiled.
"Then what?""
Thomas looked at the evidence.
"The truth doesn't win.""
She frowned.
"It survives.""
The elevator doors closed.
But Thomas didn't feel relief.
Because one question remained.
Who else knew about Project Harbor?
And why had Claire believed she could succeed?
The answer came ten minutes later.
When Security recovered one final message from Claire's computer.
A message she had scheduled to send after her arrest.
The recipient:
*Thomas Reed.*
