Chapter 5: The Name Buried in the Records
The message remained on the screen.
*STOP DIGGING, MR. REED.*
Nobody spoke.
The words were simple.
That was what made them frightening.
Michael Grant reached forward and shut Sarah's laptop.
"Disconnect it.""
Sarah looked at him.
"Sir?""
"Now.""
She pulled the power cable.
David stood near the window, staring down at the city.
Vanessa remained beside the conference table, arms folded tightly against her chest.
Thomas noticed something everyone else seemed to miss.
She wasn't frightened by the message.
She was frightened by the fact that someone had sent it.
That was different.
Thomas slowly turned toward her.
"You weren't surprised.""
Vanessa's eyes snapped toward him.
"What?""
"When the message appeared.""
"I was surprised.""
"No.""
Her expression hardened.
"You don't know me well enough to tell me what I'm feeling.""
Thomas nodded.
"You're right.""
He opened his briefcase.
Then removed a small notebook.
David looked at him.
"What are you doing?""
"Thinking.""
"About?""
Thomas flipped through several handwritten pages.
"People.""
Vanessa let out a frustrated breath.
"This is absurd.""
Thomas looked up.
"People who are innocent usually want to know who threatened them.""
She stared at him.
"And guilty people?""
"They usually want to know what the other person has found.""
Vanessa's face tightened.
Michael stepped between them.
"Enough.""
Then he looked at Thomas.
"What do you think we should do?""
Thomas considered the question.
"Nothing publicly.""
David turned.
"Nothing?""
"Not yet.""
Thomas pointed toward the disconnected laptop.
"Whoever sent that message knows the internal system.""
Michael nodded.
"Obviously.""
"They also know I've been looking at the reports.""
David folded his arms.
"So?""
"So they are close enough to know what I'm doing.""
Michael's expression darkened.
"You think this is someone inside the company.""
"I think it's someone with access.""
Vanessa gave a bitter laugh.
"Half the building has access.""
"Not to everything.""
Thomas opened his notebook.
"I want the security logs.""
Michael immediately shook his head.
"That's restricted.""
"I know.""
"I mean I can't give those to you.""
Thomas closed the notebook.
"Then have Security review them while I'm present.""
Michael stared at him.
"Why?""
"Because whoever did this is going to make another mistake.""
Vanessa stepped forward.
"And how exactly do you know that?""
Thomas looked at her.
"Because people who believe they've won become careless.""
Her eyes narrowed.
Michael studied Thomas for several moments.
Then he nodded.
"Fine.""
David looked surprised.
"You're going to let him investigate?""
"I'm going to let him observe.""
Thomas smiled faintly.
"That's enough.""
The meeting ended twenty minutes later.
Vanessa was escorted to a separate office while Legal began examining the documents.
Sarah was told not to discuss the matter with anyone.
David returned to Finance.
Michael disappeared into his office.
Thomas went downstairs.
Not because anyone had asked him to.
Because he wanted to see something.
The employee directory.
He stopped beside the security desk.
"Excuse me.""
The security officer looked up.
"Yes, sir?""
"I need access to the visitor records from Friday night.""
The guard immediately shook his head.
"Only authorized personnel.""
Thomas handed him a business card.
The guard read it.
His expression changed slightly.
"Senior Operations Consultant?""
Thomas nodded.
"I don't need the details. Just the names of people who entered the executive floor after ten.""
The guard hesitated.
Then made a phone call.
Ten minutes later, Thomas had the list.
Seven names.
Three executives.
One IT administrator.
Two cleaning employees.
And one security supervisor.
Thomas read them carefully.
Then stopped.
He recognized one name.
Not because it was famous.
Because it belonged to someone he had never seen before.
*Ethan Cole — Executive Strategy Office.*
Thomas stared at the name.
"Who is that?""
The security guard looked at the monitor.
"Mr. Cole?""
"Yes.""
"New executive strategy analyst, I think.""
"When did he start?""
"About three weeks ago.""
Thomas thanked him.
Then walked away.
He didn't return upstairs.
Instead, he entered the employee lounge and sat alone at a small table.
He searched his memory.
Three weeks.
A new strategy analyst.
Access to executive reporting systems.
Late-night building access.
Thomas opened his notebook again.
He wrote one line.
*Find Ethan Cole.*
Then he crossed it out.
Underneath, he wrote:
*Find who hired Ethan Cole.*
That was when he heard a voice behind him.
"You shouldn't be asking about him.""
Thomas looked up.
Sarah stood near the doorway.
Her face was pale.
"Why?""
She glanced around before sitting opposite him.
"I saw Ethan last Friday.""
Thomas closed his notebook.
"Where?""
"On the executive floor.""
"At what time?""
"A little after eleven.""
Thomas leaned forward.
"What was he doing?""
"I don't know.""
"Did you speak to him?""
Sarah shook her head.
"But I saw him come out of Vanessa's office.""
Thomas said nothing.
Sarah lowered her voice.
"He had a folder.""
"Did you see what was inside?""
"No.""
"What did he do next?""
"He went downstairs.""
Thomas stared at her.
"Did anyone else see him?""
Sarah hesitated.
"I don't know.""
Thomas stood.
"Thank you.""
Sarah grabbed his sleeve.
"Wait.""
He looked down.
"You need to understand something.""
"What?""
"Ethan isn't just some analyst.""
Thomas waited.
Sarah swallowed.
"His father sits on Sterling Global's board.""
Thomas's expression didn't change.
But something inside him clicked into place.
"What's his father's name?""
Sarah whispered it.
"Richard Cole.""
Thomas knew that name.
Everybody in manufacturing knew it.
Richard Cole had built a reputation as an aggressive investor who specialized in acquiring underperforming companies, cutting costs, selling assets, and exiting before the damage became obvious.
Thomas had encountered him fifteen years earlier.
Not personally.
But through one of his former plants.
A facility in Ohio had been acquired by a company connected to Cole.
Within eighteen months, the plant was closed.
The employees lost their jobs.
The machinery was sold.
The property was redeveloped.
And the acquiring company posted record returns.
Thomas remembered something else.
The same strategy had been used in Indiana.
Then Pennsylvania.
Then Missouri.
Always the same pattern.
Declining performance.
Emergency restructuring.
Facility closure.
Asset sale.
Executive bonuses.
Thomas looked toward the windows.
Chicago traffic crawled below.
"What are they trying to do with Lakewood?""
Sarah whispered, "I don't know.""
Thomas looked back at her.
"Yes, you do.""
She shook her head.
"No.""
"Then why are you scared?""
Sarah looked down.
After several seconds, she spoke.
"There was a meeting last week.""
"Between whom?""
"I wasn't supposed to know about it.""
"Who?""
She swallowed.
"Vanessa. Ethan. Richard Cole.""
Thomas's eyes hardened.
"Where?""
"Private dining room at the Palmer House.""
He stood completely still.
"How do you know?""
Sarah reached inside her purse and removed her phone.
"I saw the calendar.""
She showed him a screenshot.
The meeting title was vague.
*Lakewood — Final Alignment.*
Participants:
*Vanessa Blake. Ethan Cole. Richard Cole.*
The date was six days earlier.
Thomas studied the screen.
Then noticed something at the bottom.
The event had been created by someone else.
*Michael Grant.*
Thomas looked at Sarah.
"Did Michael know about this?""
"I don't know.""
Thomas took a slow breath.
There were suddenly too many questions.
Why was the CEO's name attached to a meeting involving Vanessa and Richard Cole?
Why had Ethan been in Vanessa's office after eleven?
Why had the executive system been accessed from Thomas's credentials?
And why had someone threatened him immediately after the discovery?
One possibility was beginning to emerge.
But Thomas refused to accept it without evidence.
He handed Sarah back the phone.
"Don't tell anyone you showed me this.""
She nodded.
He began walking away.
"Mr. Reed?""
Thomas stopped.
Sarah looked at him.
"Are you going to quit?""
He turned.
"No.""
"Why?""
Thomas gave her a faint smile.
"Because someone just told me to stop.""
Then he walked toward the elevators.
His phone vibrated before the doors opened.
Unknown number.
Thomas answered.
"Hello?""
Silence.
Then a man's voice.
Low.
Controlled.
"You were warned.""
Thomas recognized the voice.
Not immediately.
But enough to know it wasn't a stranger.
He stepped away from the elevator.
"Who is this?""
The man laughed softly.
"Ask yourself why Michael Grant hired you.""
The line went dead.
Thomas stared at the phone.
Then the elevator doors opened.
He stepped inside.
For the first time since arriving at Sterling Global, Thomas wasn't sure who he could trust.
And that uncertainty included the one person whose approval could have ended everything with a single signature.
May you like
The CEO.
Michael Grant.
