Chapter 8: The Betrayal Inside the Corner Office
Nobody spoke for several seconds.
Michael's face was unreadable.
Richard stared at him.
Vanessa looked between them.
Ethan had stopped pretending to be calm.
David slowly closed the laptop.
The recording had changed everything.
But not enough.
Thomas knew that.
A recording could prove a conversation.
It couldn't prove everything surrounding it.
Richard was the first to recover.
"This has been manipulated.""
The board looked at him.
"You fabricated the recording.""
Michael's voice was quiet.
Richard pointed at the IT administrator.
"Can your system verify the file?""
The administrator nodded.
"The audio was recovered directly from a deleted executive session archive.""
"Whose archive?""
"Richard Cole's office.""
Richard shook his head.
"That proves nothing.""
Thomas looked at him.
"It proves your office recorded the conversation.""
Richard glared.
"Not who made it.""
"True.""
Thomas nodded.
"Which means we need context.""
Richard smiled.
"Exactly.""
For the first time, he seemed confident again.
Then he looked directly at Michael.
"This entire investigation has been orchestrated.""
Michael's eyes narrowed.
"By whom?""
Richard pointed at Thomas.
"Him.""
The room went quiet.
Thomas didn't react.
Richard continued.
"He was hired under suspicious circumstances.""
"You opposed my hiring him," Michael said.
"I opposed hiring an outsider without adequate background review.""
"His background was reviewed.""
"By your office.""
Michael stood.
"Careful.""
Richard's smile disappeared.
"This man arrived here claiming to be an operations consultant. Within days, he had access to sensitive reports, confidential files, and executive data.""
Thomas almost laughed.
"You gave me access.""
Richard ignored him.
"He found discrepancies that conveniently pointed toward people standing in opposition to my strategic recommendations.""
Thomas leaned forward.
"Your strategic recommendations involving the purchase of Lakewood property?""
Richard's face hardened.
"I'm talking about restructuring.""
Thomas nodded.
"Of course.""
A board member interrupted.
"Enough.""
Everyone looked toward the oldest director at the table.
"Let's stop arguing about motives.""
He pointed toward the evidence.
"We need facts.""
Thomas nodded.
"Agreed.""
He reached into his briefcase.
Removed a small USB drive.
And placed it on the table.
Richard's expression changed.
"What is that?""
"An independent copy.""
Michael looked at Thomas.
"Of what?""
"Everything I found before this meeting.""
Richard stared at the drive.
Thomas continued.
"Original reports. File histories. System timestamps.
Vendor agreements. Lakewood financials.""
He paused.
"And one file I haven't shown anyone.""
Richard's face went still.
Thomas looked at him.
"You know which one.""
For the first time, Richard looked genuinely frightened.
Vanessa turned toward him.
"What is he talking about?""
Richard said nothing.
Thomas slid the drive toward Michael.
"Open the folder called 'Project Harbor.''"
Michael inserted the drive.
A series of files appeared.
Contracts.
Property valuations.
Internal communications.
A spreadsheet.
Michael opened it.
His face changed.
David leaned closer.
"What?""
Michael turned the screen.
The document listed projected acquisition prices for multiple Sterling properties.
Not just Lakewood.
Seven facilities.
Thomas looked at the board.
"This wasn't a single closure.""
He pointed at the spreadsheet.
"It was a portfolio strategy.""
David whispered, "Seven sites.""
Thomas nodded.
"All under the same pattern.""
Each facility had been marked with an internal rating.
Then a projected sale value.
Then a projected acquisition value.
The difference was enormous.
Richard had positioned his investment group to purchase distressed properties after Sterling itself deliberately weakened their financial appearance.
The room became tense.
One board member looked at Richard.
"Did the board authorize this?""
Richard answered immediately.
"The board authorized exploration of strategic asset sales.""
"Not sweetheart acquisitions.""
Richard said nothing.
Thomas clicked another file.
A list of shell companies appeared.
"These entities are connected to Cole Strategic Holdings.""
Richard's voice rose.
"That's circumstantial.""
Thomas clicked again.
Banking records appeared.
"Then explain the payment transfers.""
Richard went pale.
Vanessa stared at the screen.
"Richard...""
He turned toward her.
"Be quiet.""
She stopped.
Thomas noticed her expression.
She was beginning to understand.
She had been promised a bonus.
Maybe more.
But she hadn't known how far it went.
Thomas looked at her.
"Did you know about the property acquisition?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"I knew about restructuring.""
"Not the sale?""
"No.""
Richard snapped.
"Don't answer him.""
Vanessa looked at Richard.
Something broke inside her expression.
"You told me it was a standard consolidation.""
Richard said nothing.
"You told me the Lakewood closure was necessary.""
Still nothing.
"You said the board wanted it.""
Richard finally spoke.
"They did.""
Vanessa looked toward the board.
"Did you?""
Nobody answered.
Her face crumpled.
Then she laughed.
A small, broken laugh.
"I ruined my career for this.""
Thomas looked at her.
"You ruined it when you stopped asking questions.""
Vanessa looked at him.
For once, there was no anger in her eyes.
Only regret.
"Why didn't you just let me destroy you?""
Thomas answered quietly.
"Because I don't destroy people.""
He looked toward the evidence.
"I expose choices.""
Vanessa looked down.
Richard suddenly reached for his phone.
Michael noticed.
"Put it down.""
Richard ignored him.
He stood.
"This meeting is over.""
"No.""
Michael's voice stopped him.
Richard looked toward the door.
Two security officers were already standing outside.
Richard stared at them.
"You're detaining a board member?""
"No.""
Michael shook his head.
"I'm preventing you from destroying evidence.""
Richard laughed bitterly.
"You think you can remove me?""
Michael looked around the table.
"Can we?""
One by one, the board members raised their hands.
Richard stared.
Nine.
Then ten.
Only Ethan's father and one other director kept their hands down.
The vote was overwhelming.
Richard sat.
Ethan looked at his father.
"You're done.""
Richard turned toward him.
"Don't.""
Ethan shook his head.
"You told me this was legal.""
"It was.""
"You told me everyone knew.""
"They did.""
"You told me Michael signed off.""
Michael looked at Ethan.
"I never did.""
Ethan closed his eyes.
Thomas watched him carefully.
The young man looked less like a criminal now.
More like someone realizing he'd been used.
"Where is the original server?"" Thomas asked.
Ethan looked at him.
"What?""
"The one storing the deleted recordings.""
Ethan hesitated.
Richard whispered, "Don't answer.""
Ethan looked at his father.
Then at Michael.
Finally, he said, "Basement archives.""
David frowned.
"Our old server room?""
Ethan nodded.
"There's a backup node there.""
Thomas stood.
"Then that's where we're going.""
Michael rose.
"Not without Security.""
Thomas nodded.
They left the boardroom together.
Vanessa remained behind, staring at the table.
Richard was escorted in the opposite direction.
Ethan followed Michael.
The elevator ride was silent.
When they reached the basement, Thomas immediately noticed something wrong.
The server room door was open.
Michael stopped.
"Nobody goes inside.""
Security moved ahead.
Then a shout.
"Fire!""
Smoke poured from the room.
Someone had started a fire around the old backup equipment.
Thomas stared.
"The evidence.""
Security officers rushed forward with extinguishers.
Michael grabbed Thomas's shoulder.
"Stay back.""
Thomas didn't move.
Then he saw something on the floor just outside the server room.
A small black notebook.
He recognized it immediately.
Richard's.
Thomas picked it up.
The pages were covered in handwritten notes.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
Facility codes.
At the very back was a single page.
Three words were underlined twice.
*Project Harbor — Final Authorization*
Beneath it was a signature.
Michael Grant.
Thomas looked up.
The hallway seemed to tilt.
Michael saw the page.
His face drained of color.
"No.""
Thomas stared at him.
"Is that your signature?""
Michael said nothing.
The fire alarm screamed overhead.
The server room filled with smoke.
Ethan backed away.
David whispered, "Michael?""
The CEO finally spoke.
"I never signed that.""
Thomas looked at the signature again.
It was identical to his genuine signature on the employment agreement.
Perfect.
Too perfect.
Thomas suddenly remembered something.
The forged consulting contract.
The fake account access.
The manipulated board reports.
All of it had one thing in common.
Someone wasn't merely forging documents.
Someone had access to executive identities.
Thomas looked at Michael.
Then at Ethan.
Then at the burning server room.
And suddenly he understood why the final authorization had been forged.
It wasn't meant to frame Michael.
It was meant to control him.
A voice came from behind them.
"Mr. Reed.""
Thomas turned.
Vanessa stood at the end of the hallway.
Security tried to stop her.
She raised both hands.
"I know who did it.""
Thomas stared at her.
"Who?""
Vanessa looked toward Michael.
Then her voice dropped.
"The person who has been feeding Richard information.""
She took a breath.
"It's someone inside the CEO's office.""
Michael went completely still.
May you like
Vanessa pointed toward the burning server room.
"And they have been working there for years.""
