Chapter 8: The Secret Robert Was Still Hiding

The guests expected an announcement about the wedding.

They didn't expect a confession.

The church fell silent when Elena stepped onto the small stage near the front.

Everyone watched her.

Some with sympathy.

Some with curiosity.

Some with the uncomfortable excitement people get when someone else's life falls apart.

I stood a few feet away.

Not beside her.

Not in the place she had taken from me.

Just close enough for her to know I was there.

Elena looked across the room.

Then she spoke.

"I know many of you came here expecting a wedding.""

A few people shifted.

"My wedding was supposed to happen today.""

She paused.

"But it won't.""

Whispers started.

She continued before they could grow.

"I found out that the person I was supposed to marry had hidden important things from me.""

Everyone became quiet.

"Things involving my finances. My future. My trust.""

Her voice shook.

"But this isn't just about him.""

She looked down.

"It's about me.""

That surprised everyone.

Including me.

"I spent my whole life wanting someone who left to come back.""

Her eyes moved toward Robert.

He stood at the back of the room.

Alone.

"I thought if my biological father finally chose me, all the pain would disappear.""

Robert lowered his head.

"But I forgot something.""

She looked toward me.

"I already had someone who chose me every day.""

The room was completely silent.

My throat tightened.

"I hurt him.""

Elena's voice broke.

"I hurt the person who never gave me a reason to doubt him.""

Miriam covered her mouth.

I looked away.

Because hearing your child admit your pain in front of everyone was both healing and heartbreaking.

After the announcement, the guests slowly left.

Some hugged Elena.

Some apologized.

Some avoided eye contact.

By the afternoon, the church was empty.

Almost.

Robert remained.

I found him outside near the parking lot.

He was staring at the ground.

"You should talk to her," I said.

He looked up.

"I know.""

"But?""

He sighed.

"I don't know if I deserve to.""

That surprised me.

Because for the first time, he didn't sound like a man trying to reclaim something.

He sounded like someone who finally understood what he had lost.

"Maybe you don't.""

He nodded.

"I know.""

The honesty caught me off guard.

"I spent twenty years telling myself I had reasons.""

He looked toward the church.

"Work. Money. Problems. Timing.""

He shook his head.

"But the truth is, I made choices.""

I said nothing.

"Leaving was a choice.""

His voice became quieter.

"Not coming back sooner was a choice.""

He looked at me.

"And I hate that you got to be the father I should have been.""

I looked away.

I didn't want his guilt.

I didn't need it.

But I understood it.

"Why did you really come back?""

He didn't answer immediately.

Then he said:

"Because I got sick.""

The words surprised me.

"What?""

"Three months ago, I found out I had a serious health issue.""

I stared at him.

"And that made you think about Elena.""

He nodded.

"I realized I had spent my whole life thinking I had more time.""

He laughed sadly.

"I thought I could fix things later.""

A familiar sentence.

One people told themselves until later disappeared.

"I came back because I didn't want my daughter to remember me only as the man who left.""

I studied him.

"Did you tell her about your health?""

"No.""

"Why?""

"Because I didn't want her pity.""

That was the first thing he had said that sounded like a father.

Not a man looking for forgiveness.

A father protecting his daughter.

Before I could respond, Elena came outside.

She saw us.

She stopped.

Robert immediately looked nervous.

"Elena.""

She didn't move.

For a moment, I thought she might walk away.

Instead, she said:

"I want to hear the truth.""

Robert nodded.

"I know.""

"All of it.""

"I will tell you.""

She looked at him.

"Even the ugly parts?""

He swallowed.

"Especially those.""

I watched them walk away together.

Not as a happy ending.

Not yet.

Too much damage existed between them.

But maybe healing didn't begin with forgiveness.

Maybe it began with honesty.

I turned back toward the church.

And that was when my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A woman's voice spoke.

"Is this Daniel Carter?""

"Yes.""

"My name is Rebecca.""

I frowned.

"Do I know you?""

"No.""

A pause.

"But I know something about Lucas.""

My grip tightened.

"What about him?""

Her voice dropped.

"He wasn't just hiding money.""

The world seemed to slow.

"What are you talking about?""

"He was planning something bigger.""

I looked back toward the church.

"What?""

May you like

Then she said the one thing I never expected.

"Your daughter wasn't his first victim.""
