Chapter 3: The Secret Hidden Behind the Wedding

I printed the document before I read it.

I don't know why.

Maybe because some part of me still believed paper made things real.

Maybe because after twenty years of being told I mattered, I needed proof that I wasn't imagining everything.

The agreement was between Robert Hayes and Elena.

At first glance, it looked harmless.

A promise.

A family arrangement.

Then I saw the date.

Three months ago.

Exactly when Robert returned.

I read the first page.

Then the second.

Then I stopped.

Because I finally understood.

This wasn't about a father wanting to reconnect with his daughter.

It was about control.

Robert had promised Elena something.

Something she had always wanted.

Financial security.

A new home.

Help with her future.

And in exchange, there was one condition.

He wanted to publicly reclaim his role as her father.

The wedding was the stage.

The aisle was the announcement.

I sat there holding the papers, feeling something colder than anger.

Betrayal.

Not from Robert.

I expected disappointment from him.

But from Elena.

Because she had looked me in the eyes and told me this was about love.

When it was also about a promise.

A deal.

I drove straight to the church.

The rehearsal was already beginning.

Elena stood near the altar wearing a simple white dress.

She looked happy.

Until she saw me.

Then her smile disappeared.

"Daniel.""

I held up the papers.

Her face changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

"You know about this?""

She didn't answer.

That was enough.

Miriam looked between us.

"What is that?""

I handed her the document.

She read it.

Her expression slowly fell.

"Elena...""

"Mom, it's not what you think.""

"Then explain it.""

Elena looked at me.

"You went through my things?""

"No.""

I held up my phone.

"Robert sent it.""

That shocked everyone.

"Why would he do that?"" Elena asked.

I looked at her.

"Maybe because even he knows this isn't right.""

She took a step back.

"You don't understand.""

"Then help me understand.""

Her eyes filled with tears.

For the first time since yesterday, I saw the little girl I remembered.

The girl who used to run to me when life scared her.

"I wanted him to choose me.""

The words were barely above a whisper.

Everyone became still.

"I spent my whole childhood wondering why I wasn't enough for him.""

I softened.

Because underneath everything, there was pain.

Real pain.

"He came back," she continued.

"He apologized. He told me he wanted to fix everything.""

"And you believed him.""

She nodded.

"Because I needed to.""

That sentence hurt.

Because I understood.

Children don't stop wanting their parents.

Even when parents fail them.

They keep hoping.

They keep waiting.

They keep believing someday they will finally be chosen.

But then Elena looked at me.

"And you don't understand what it feels like.""

I froze.

"Don't understand?""

"No.""

Her tears fell.

"Because you were always there.""

The words surprised me.

"You had my whole life. He didn't.""

I stared at her.

"And somehow," she whispered, "I thought if he walked me down the aisle, maybe I could finally get the father I always wanted.""

Nobody spoke.

Because suddenly this wasn't about a wedding.

It was about a little girl who had spent years waiting for someone who never came.

But then I looked at the agreement again.

"And what about this?""

Her expression changed.

"I needed help.""

"Help?""

"Robert offered to pay off my debts.""

I frowned.

"What debts?""

She looked away.

And that was when I realized there was another secret.

"What debts, Elena?""

She didn't answer.

Miriam stepped closer.

"Sweetheart?""

Finally Elena whispered:

"The wedding isn't fully paid for.""

My stomach dropped.

"What?""

"The deposits.""

She wiped her face.

"I thought Robert could help.""

I looked at the folder on the table.

The expensive venue.

The flowers.

The perfect wedding.

All built on promises from a man who had only been back three months.

Then my phone rang.

Everyone looked at it.

The caller ID appeared.

Robert.

I answered.

His voice was urgent.

"Daniel, listen carefully.""

"What?""

"Do not let Elena marry tomorrow until she knows the truth.""

My heart stopped.

"What truth?""

A pause.

Then Robert said:

"The money I promised her was never mine to give.""

I looked at Elena.

She was watching me.

"What does that mean?""

Robert lowered his voice.

"It means someone else has been controlling the account.""

The church suddenly felt colder.

"Who?""

Another pause.

Then:

"Her fiancé.""

The call ended.

May you like

And in that moment, I realized Elena hadn't just chosen the wrong father.

She might have chosen the wrong husband.
