Chapter 6: The Wedding That Started Falling Apart

The next hour changed everything.

The wedding rehearsal continued without the bride.

The flowers arrived.

The musicians practiced.

The church staff moved around like nothing was wrong.

But inside the small room behind the sanctuary, Elena's entire world was collapsing.

She sat with the documents spread across the table.

I stood near the window.

Miriam sat beside her.

Robert stood across from us.

And Lucas was gone.

For now.

"I don't understand," Elena whispered.

Nobody answered.

She looked at Robert.

"How did you know?""

Robert looked ashamed.

"I found out before I came back.""

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

His eyes filled with regret.

"Because I was afraid you wouldn't believe me.""

Elena laughed sadly.

"You're right.""

That hurt him.

Good.

Maybe he needed to feel some of what he had caused.

"I spent my whole life waiting for you," Elena said.

Robert lowered his head.

"I know.""

"No, you don't.""

Her voice shook.

"You don't know what it feels like to wonder why your own father doesn't choose you.""

He looked broken.

"I was wrong.""

"Yes.""

She wiped her tears.

"You were.""

The honesty surprised me.

Because Elena wasn't the angry child from yesterday.

She wasn't defending him anymore.

She was finally seeing him.

Then she looked at me.

And I wasn't prepared for what she said.

"Daniel.""

I turned.

"I need to ask you something.""

I nodded.

"What?""

She hesitated.

"Did you know?""

The question hurt.

"What?""

"About Lucas.""

I shook my head.

"No.""

She looked down.

"I mean about Robert.""

I understood.

"Did I know he would come back?""

She nodded.

"No.""

I sat beside her.

"Elena, I didn't know.""

She studied my face.

"I believe you.""

Two words.

Simple.

But after everything, they felt enormous.

Then she whispered:

"I was cruel to you.""

I didn't answer.

Because she was right.

"I wanted him to choose me so badly that I convinced myself everyone else was the enemy.""

A tear rolled down her cheek.

"Even you.""

I looked away.

Because hearing an apology didn't erase the pain.

But it mattered.

"I don't know how to fix this," she said.

I looked at her.

"The wedding?""

She shook her head.

"No.""

She touched the documents.

"Everything.""

I thought about that.

About twenty years.

About all the moments that mattered.

Then I said:

"Start with the truth.""

She looked at me.

"Even if it ruins everything?""

I nodded.

"Especially then.""

A knock interrupted us.

Everyone turned.

A police officer stood at the door.

Behind him was Lucas.

My stomach tightened.

"What happened?"" Miriam asked.

The officer looked at Elena.

"Are you Elena Carter?""

"Yes.""

"We received a report regarding financial fraud.""

Lucas immediately stepped forward.

"This is ridiculous.""

The officer ignored him.

"Ms. Carter, we need to ask you some questions.""

Elena looked at Lucas.

For the first time, there was no love in her eyes.

Only realization.

"What did you do?""

Lucas shook his head.

"I did this for us.""

She stared at him.

"No.""

Her voice was quiet.

"You did this for yourself.""

The officer escorted Lucas away.

And as everyone watched him leave, I thought about the wedding that was supposed to happen tomorrow.

The dress.

The flowers.

The music.

The perfect moment.

All gone.

But maybe some things had to break before people could finally see what they were built on.

Elena walked over to me.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Like she was afraid I would disappear.

"Daniel.""

I looked at her.

She took a shaky breath.

"I don't know if I deserve to ask this.""

I waited.

"But...""

Her voice broke.

"Will you still be there?""

For twenty years, I had answered that question without hesitation.

This time was different.

Because being there didn't mean pretending I wasn't hurt.

It didn't mean forgetting.

It didn't mean letting someone destroy me and calling it love.

I looked at the woman I had raised.

The daughter I never needed to share my blood to love.

And I said:

"I never left, Elena.""

Her tears fell.

"But I need you to understand something.""

She nodded.

"What?""

I looked toward the church doors.

"Being your father was never about walking you down an aisle.""

A long silence passed.

"It was about being the person who stayed after everyone else walked away.""

And for the first time in two days, Elena reached for my hand.

Not because she needed something.

May you like

Not because she was afraid.

But because she finally remembered who had been holding it all along.
