Chapter 8: The Family Secret That Began Before Sofia Was Born
The world had a strange way of becoming quiet when everything fell apart.
I expected anger.
I expected shouting.
I expected my mind to explode with questions.
But instead, I felt nothing.
A strange emptiness.
Because there was a limit to how much betrayal a person could process at once.
My wife.
My brother.
My mother.
My father.
The people who were supposed to be the foundation of my life had all been hiding pieces of a truth that involved my daughter.
And now they were standing in front of me, each carrying a different version of the same nightmare.
I looked at my mother.
The woman who held me when I was a child.
The woman who taught me that family was everything.
The woman who had spent years watching me fight for Sofia.
"Tell me he's wrong.""
My voice was quiet.
Almost calm.
My mother looked at the floor.
She did not answer.
That was worse than any confession.
Because my mother had always been strong.
She could argue with anyone.
She could face any problem.
But now she could not even look at me.
"Mother.""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Adrian...""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"Not this time.""
I pointed toward Sofia.
"My daughter spent three years believing her body betrayed her.""
My voice became heavier.
"She watched her sister run while she sat there wondering why she couldn't.""
I looked at my mother.
"And you knew something.""
She closed her eyes.
"I was trying to protect her.""
The words made my blood boil.
"Everyone says that.""
I stepped forward.
"Everyone uses that excuse.""
My father remained silent.
Clara looked away.
Because they all knew.
They had all said the same thing.
Protect.
Protect.
Protect.
But nobody had protected Sofia.
They had protected their secrets.
My mother finally spoke.
"It was never supposed to happen this way.""
I stared at her.
"Then tell me how it was supposed to happen.""
She looked at Sofia.
A painful expression crossed her face.
"I loved her.""
I almost laughed.
"Love doesn't hide the truth.""
"No.""
Her voice broke.
"But fear does.""
The room became quiet.
She sat down slowly.
And for the first time, my mother looked old.
Not powerful.
Not untouchable.
Just tired.
"Before Sofia was born, your father discovered something.""
I looked at my father.
He nodded.
"Something about the hospital?""
My mother nodded.
"But it went deeper than that.""
She looked at me.
"Your father discovered that someone had been changing medical records for years.""
"Why?""
"To cover mistakes.""
"Whose mistakes?""
She hesitated.
Then:
"People with influence.""
I narrowed my eyes.
"Meaning?""
My father answered.
"The hospital was not the only place involved.""
He walked toward the files.
"There were people who wanted certain information buried.""
I looked at the documents.
"About Sofia?""
"No.""
My father looked at me.
"About you.""
That stopped me.
"Me?""
He nodded.
"You were never supposed to inherit the empire.""
I frowned.
"What are you talking about?""
My father opened another file.
Inside were documents I had never seen.
Old legal records.
Ownership agreements.
Names.
Dates.
"I discovered that someone had been manipulating our family for decades.""
I looked at my mother.
"Who?""
My father didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he looked at Clara.
"She knows.""
Everyone turned.
Clara froze.
"Adrian...""
I looked at my wife.
"What does he mean?""
She swallowed.
"I didn't know everything.""
"Enough.""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I knew there was a plan.""
"What plan?""
She looked at Sofia.
"A plan to weaken you.""
The room became colder.
"Weaken me?""
Clara nodded.
"Your father built this family on control. Power. Loyalty.""
She looked down.
"Some people wanted to take that away from you.""
"Who?""
Her voice dropped.
"Your own family.""
I looked at Matteo.
My brother had been silent the entire time.
"Matteo?""
He looked away.
That hurt more than I expected.
Because anger from enemies was easy.
Betrayal from strangers was expected.
But from my brother?
That was different.
I walked toward him.
"Did you know?""
He didn't answer.
"Matteo.""
Finally, he spoke.
"Yes.""
One word.
One answer.
And somehow it hurt more than anything else.
I grabbed his shirt.
Marco moved immediately.
But I raised my hand.
No.
This was family.
This was something I needed to hear.
"You knew.""
Matteo's eyes were red.
"I didn't know everything.""
"You knew enough.""
He looked ashamed.
"I was trying to fix it.""
"By kidnapping my daughter?""
"I didn't take her.""
"Then why was she with you?""
His face changed.
"Because she was in danger.""
I stared at him.
"From who?""
He looked at our mother.
And suddenly, the room became silent again.
My mother whispered:
"Matteo.""
But he continued.
"From the person who has been making decisions for this family for years.""
I looked at my mother.
She looked away.
The truth was finally breaking through.
Slowly.
Painfully.
"Tell me everything.""
Nobody moved.
Then Matteo sighed.
"I found out three years ago that Sofia's condition was not permanent.""
I looked at him.
"How?""
"Because I found the original hospital records.""
"The ones that were changed?""
He nodded.
"They showed Sofia had a chance to recover.""
My hands tightened.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
His eyes filled with guilt.
"Because Mother stopped me.""
I looked at my mother.
She whispered:
"I was afraid.""
"Afraid of what?""
She looked at Sofia.
"That if you knew the truth, you would destroy everyone involved.""
I stared.
"Maybe I would have.""
She nodded.
"I know.""
The honesty surprised me.
Then she continued.
"But there was another reason.""
"What?""
She looked at my father.
"He was not supposed to survive.""
My father remained still.
My eyes moved between them.
"What does that mean?""
My mother took a deep breath.
"The night your father supposedly died...""
She stopped.
"The accident was not an accident.""
The room went silent.
I felt cold.
"Someone tried to kill him.""
My father nodded.
"And when they failed, they needed him to disappear.""
I looked at the man standing in front of me.
All these years.
Alive.
Hidden.
Watching from the shadows.
"Why didn't you come back?""
My father's expression broke.
"Because the person who tried to kill me was still close to you.""
I looked around the room.
At my family.
"Who?""
Nobody answered.
Then my father said:
"Your mother.""
My mother closed her eyes.
But this time, she didn't deny it.
My chest tightened.
"You?""
She looked at me.
"I didn't order it.""
"Then why?""
"Because I knew it would happen.""
Her words were barely audible.
"I knew people around us were planning something.""
"And you let it happen?""
"No.""
She shook her head.
"I tried to stop it.""
"Then why hide?""
"Because I made a deal.""
The room went quiet.
"A deal with who?""
My mother looked toward the door.
Then toward Sofia.
"The person who has been controlling everything.""
I waited.
"Who?""
She whispered:
"The hospital director.""
I frowned.
"The hospital director?""
My father nodded.
"He wasn't just a doctor.""
"He was connected to our family.""
"How?""
My mother looked at me.
"Because he is your uncle.""
The revelation hit like a storm.
Another family member.
Another hidden enemy.
Another person who had been close enough to destroy us.
Then Marco's phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed.
"Mr. Moretti.""
"What?""
"We found Elena.""
My heart immediately changed.
"Where?""
Marco looked at the screen.
"At the hospital.""
I frowned.
"Which hospital?""
He hesitated.
"The same hospital where Sofia was born.""
A terrible feeling moved through me.
"Why is she there?""
Marco looked at me.
"Because she discovered something before she disappeared.""
"What?""
His voice lowered.
"She found the original birth records.""
I looked at Sofia.
Then at my family.
The truth was finally coming.
But somehow, I knew the worst part was still ahead.
Because if Elena had gone back to the hospital...
She was not looking for answers.
May you like
She was looking for the person who had destroyed my daughter’s life.
And now that person knew she had found them.
