Chapter 2: The Necklace That Hid a Dangerous Truth

The flight back to Italy felt longer than any journey I had ever taken.

Normally, I hated waiting.

Waiting meant someone else controlled the situation.

In my world, control was everything.

But that night, sitting alone in my private jet, staring at the frozen image of Sofia standing for the first time in her life, I realized I was trapped between two impossible realities.

The first was a miracle.

My daughter had walked.

The second was a betrayal.

The woman who made it happen was being accused of stealing from my family.

I looked at the picture on my phone again.

Sofia’s small hands wrapped around Elena’s shoulders.

The pure happiness on her face.

There was no fear.

No sadness.

No frustration.

Only pride.

Elena had given my daughter something no amount of money could buy.

Hope.

And now my family wanted me to believe she was a criminal.

I closed my eyes.

Something was wrong.

I had spent my entire life reading people.

A nervous employee.

A dishonest partner.

A rival hiding an agenda.

I could see deception in a person's posture, their voice, even the way they avoided eye contact.

But Elena?

Nothing about her felt false.

When I arrived at Moretti Estate, it was almost midnight.

The mansion was brighter than usual.

That immediately told me something.

People only turned on every light in the house when they were afraid.

My security team opened the gates before my car even reached them.

I stepped outside.

The cold air hit my face.

Several guards stood near the entrance.

Too many.

"What happened?"" I asked Marco, my head of security.

He looked uncomfortable.

That bothered me more than anything.

Marco had worked for me for fifteen years.

I had seen him face armed men without blinking.

But now he looked uncertain.

"Your wife found the necklace missing around eight tonight," he said.

"The necklace?""

He nodded.

"The Moretti sapphire necklace.""

I stopped walking.

There were many valuable things inside the mansion.

Paintings worth millions.

Rare collections.

Jewelry passed down through generations.

But that necklace was different.

The Moretti sapphire was not just an expensive piece.

It was a family symbol.

My grandfather had given it to my grandmother on their wedding day. It had survived wars, betrayals, and decades of family conflicts.

Everyone knew its importance.

Everyone knew where it was kept.

"Where was it?"" I asked.

"In the master bedroom safe.""

"And who had access?""

Marco hesitated.

I turned toward him.

"Answer me.""

"Only family members and household staff with authorization.""

That answer made my jaw tighten.

Because everyone inside the house suddenly became a suspect.

I walked into the mansion.

The atmosphere was suffocating.

My employees avoided my eyes.

The servants stood silently along the walls.

Everyone knew something terrible had happened.

But nobody knew who would pay for it.

I entered the main sitting room.

Clara was there.

My wife stood near the fireplace, wearing a silk robe, her arms crossed.

Beside her were my mother, my younger brother Matteo, and two security officers.

The moment Clara saw me, relief crossed her face.

"Adrian.""

She walked toward me.

But I did not move.

"Where is Elena?""

Her expression changed slightly.

Only slightly.

But I noticed.

"She is being questioned.""

"Questioned?""

Clara looked away.

"Adrian, please. You need to understand what happened.""

"No.""

My voice was colder than I intended.

"First, I want to understand why the woman who helped our daughter walk is being treated like a criminal.""

Silence filled the room.

My mother looked uncomfortable.

Matteo shifted in his chair.

Clara's eyes hardened.

"Because she stole from us.""

I stared at her.

"You are certain?""

"Yes.""

"Based on what?""

She motioned toward the table.

The necklace box was sitting there.

Empty.

"She was the only person who spent time alone with Sofia tonight.""

I looked at her.

Slowly.

"You are accusing her because she was with our daughter?""

"No.""

Clara's voice became defensive.

"I am saying she had the opportunity.""

"Opportunity is not proof.""

"Adrian, don't do this.""

"Do what?""

"Protect someone you barely know.""

The words hit harder than she probably intended.

Because she was right about one thing.

I barely knew Elena.

But I knew my daughter.

And my daughter trusted her.

"Where was the necklace last seen?"" I asked.

"In the safe.""

"Who opened the safe?""

Clara looked away again.

That small movement caught my attention.

"Clara.""

She sighed.

"I opened it this afternoon.""

"For what?""

She hesitated.

"To look at it.""

"Why?""

"Because my mother wanted to see it.""

My eyes moved toward my mother.

She immediately shook her head.

"I never asked Clara to take it out.""

Interesting.

Very interesting.

"Then what happened after that?""

Clara crossed her arms.

"I put it back.""

"Did you lock the safe?""

"Of course.""

"Who saw you?""

Nobody answered.

The silence grew heavier.

I looked at each person in the room.

My wife.

My mother.

My brother.

People I had known for years.

And somewhere upstairs was the woman they had decided to blame.

"Bring Elena here.""

Clara stepped forward.

"Adrian—"

"Bring her here.""

My tone ended the argument.

A few minutes later, the door opened.

Elena walked inside.

Her face was pale.

But she was not crying.

That surprised me.

Most people facing accusations inside my house would break immediately.

Elena simply stood there.

Her hands were folded in front of her.

"I didn't steal anything, Mr. Moretti.""

Her voice was quiet.

Not desperate.

Not angry.

Just honest.

I studied her.

"Why should I believe you?""

The room became silent.

Elena looked down.

For a moment, I saw pain in her expression.

Then she looked back at me.

"Because I was with Sofia.""

Everyone reacted.

Clara immediately said, "Exactly. You were alone with her.""

Elena ignored her.

"Your daughter took her first steps tonight.""

My heart stopped.

She knew I had seen.

Of course she did.

The camera.

The room.

Everything.

"How long have you been practicing with her?"" I asked.

Elena looked surprised.

"Practicing?""

"Don't pretend you don't know what I mean.""

Her eyes softened.

"Almost two months.""

Two months.

I felt something twist inside me.

Two months.

And nobody told me.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Elena looked at the floor.

"Because everyone else already decided what Sofia could and couldn't do.""

Nobody spoke.

Even Clara went quiet.

Elena continued.

"Whenever I tried to encourage her, people told me not to push her. They said she needed to accept her limitations.""

My hands tightened.

Because I knew exactly who she meant.

"She didn't need someone to tell her what she couldn't do," Elena said softly.

"She needed someone to believe she could.""

The room became completely still.

Then Matteo laughed.

A short, cold laugh.

"That is a beautiful story.""

He stood.

"But stories don't explain missing jewelry.""

I looked at him.

"Sit down.""

He immediately stopped.

Matteo had always been arrogant.

But he knew when he had crossed a line.

I turned back to Elena.

"Did you enter my bedroom today?""

"No.""

"Did you see the necklace?""

"No.""

"Did you know where it was kept?""

"No.""

That answer caught my attention.

"Everyone in this house knows where it is kept.""

Elena shook her head.

"I don't.""

I believed her.

I did not know why.

But I did.

Then Marco entered the room.

"Mr. Moretti.""

Everyone turned.

"What is it?""

He held a tablet in his hand.

"The security system has been reviewed.""

"And?""

His eyes moved around the room.

"There is something unusual.""

"What?""

"The camera in the master hallway was disabled for twelve minutes tonight.""

Nobody moved.

"By who?""

Marco swallowed.

"We are checking.""

"Check faster.""

He nodded.

Then he added something else.

"But there is another recording.""

I looked at him.

"From where?""

"The nursery camera.""

My heart changed.

The nursery.

Sofia's room.

The same camera that had recorded her first steps.

Marco looked at the others.

"Someone attempted to delete the footage.""

The room exploded with reactions.

Clara looked shocked.

My mother gasped.

Matteo became completely still.

But Marco was not finished.

"Luckily, the backup system saved a copy.""

I stepped closer.

"What did it record?""

Marco looked directly at me.

"Everything that happened after Sofia walked.""

A strange feeling entered my chest.

Because suddenly I understood.

The necklace was not the real mystery.

Someone had created a distraction.

Someone wanted Elena gone.

Someone wanted the camera footage erased.

And whoever did it had made one mistake.

They forgot the person they were trying to silence was the same person who had been standing beside my daughter.

The one place in this mansion where the truth was still alive.

"Play the recording," I ordered.

Marco connected the tablet.

The screen turned black.

Then the nursery appeared.

My daughter.

Elena.

The first few seconds showed exactly what I had already seen.

Sofia walking.

Elena catching her.

Both of them laughing.

Then, several minutes later, something unexpected happened.

The nursery door opened.

And the person who entered was not Elena.

It was someone I trusted.

Someone who had been standing in that room accusing an innocent woman.

The video continued.

And for the first time that night, I realized the person who stole the necklace had never planned to escape with jewelry.

They had planned to destroy a secret.

May you like

A secret involving my daughter.

And they had no idea I was about to uncover it.
