Calm

Chapter 6: The Secret My Brother Buried for Three Years

There are moments in life when fear feels different.

Not the fear you feel before a fight.

Not the fear you feel when an enemy threatens you.

I had lived through those moments countless times.

I knew how to handle danger.

I knew how to negotiate with people who wanted to destroy me.

I knew how to survive.

But standing in my daughter’s empty room, staring at a message written by someone who had taken her from me, I felt something I had never felt before.

Helplessness.

The kind of helplessness no amount of money could defeat.

No army could fix.

No reputation could protect me from.

My daughter was gone.

And someone inside my family had taken her.

I picked up the paper from Sofia’s bed.

The ink was still fresh.

"Ask your brother.""

Three words.

A message.

A challenge.

A confession.

Because whoever left it wanted me to know one thing.

Matteo knew.

My brother.

The person who had grown up beside me.

The person who had shared my childhood.

The person I had trusted enough to stand beside me in business.

He knew something about Sofia.

Something big enough that someone was willing to take my daughter to force the truth into the open.

I turned around.

"Lock down the estate.""

My voice was calm.

Too calm.

Marco immediately reached for his radio.

"Nobody leaves. Nobody enters.""

The guards moved quickly.

The mansion that once felt like my fortress suddenly felt like a prison.

A prison built by people I trusted.

I walked to Sofia’s bed.

Her stuffed rabbit was still there.

The same rabbit she carried everywhere.

The same rabbit Elena had given her confidence to hold while learning to stand.

I picked it up.

And for a moment, I was no longer Adrian Moretti.

I was just Sofia’s father.

A father who had failed to protect his little girl.

The thought almost destroyed me.

Almost.

Then anger replaced it.

Because anger was familiar.

Anger gave me direction.

"Find Matteo.""

Marco looked at me.

"We are searching.""

"Search faster.""

"We don't know if he is still on the property.""

I turned.

"He is.""

Marco frowned.

"How do you know?""

I looked at the note.

"Because this wasn't a kidnapping.""

The room became quiet.

"What do you mean?"" Marco asked.

"Someone wanted me to find out something.""

I looked around Sofia’s room.

"They could have taken her anywhere. They could have hidden her. They could have demanded money.""

My hand tightened around the paper.

"But they left a message.""

Marco understood immediately.

"They want you to follow.""

I nodded.

"Exactly.""

A trap.

A message.

A family secret.

Everything pointed to Matteo.

And I knew where he would go.

The old family house.

The place where everything began.

The old Moretti residence sat outside the city, hidden among tall trees and forgotten roads.

My grandfather built it before our family became powerful.

Before the empire.

Before the reputation.

Before the enemies.

It was where Matteo and I spent our childhood summers.

It was where my father taught us that family loyalty mattered more than anything.

Funny.

Because years later, family was the thing threatening to destroy us.

When we arrived, the house was dark.

Too dark.

I stepped out of the vehicle.

Three security men followed.

Marco stayed beside me.

"Do you want backup?""

"No.""

"Adrian—"

"If Matteo took Sofia, he expects me.""

I walked toward the entrance.

The door was unlocked.

That worried me.

Someone who wanted to hide did not leave doors open.

Someone who wanted to be found did.

Inside, the house smelled exactly the same.

Old wood.

Dust.

Memories.

I walked through the hallway.

Pictures covered the walls.

My father.

My mother.

Matteo and me as children.

Two brothers who believed nothing could ever separate them.

I stopped in front of one picture.

Matteo was twelve.

I was fourteen.

He was smiling.

I was standing protectively beside him.

I had spent my entire life protecting my younger brother.

Until now.

A sound came from upstairs.

A small noise.

A movement.

I immediately ran.

"Adrian!""

Marco followed.

We reached the second floor.

The old study door was open.

Inside, someone was waiting.

Not Matteo.

My mother.

She sat behind my father's old desk.

Calm.

Almost peaceful.

I stopped.

"Where is my daughter?""

She looked at me sadly.

"Adrian...""

"Where is Sofia?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Safe.""

I stepped closer.

"If you say one more word without telling me where she is, I swear—"

"She is with Matteo.""

The words hit like a weapon.

My own mother.

Sitting there.

Admitting it.

"Why?""

She looked down.

"Because he knows the truth.""

"What truth?""

She touched an old photograph on the desk.

"The truth about Sofia's birth.""

I stared at her.

"I am tired of secrets.""

My voice became sharp.

"Everyone keeps saying they are protecting me while destroying my family.""

My mother closed her eyes.

"Your father made a mistake.""

I froze.

"What mistake?""

She looked at me.

"A terrible one.""

"Explain.""

She took a deep breath.

"When Sofia was born, your father was still alive.""

"I know.""

"He was investigating the hospital.""

I remembered the video.

Matteo.

The nurse.

The bracelet.

"Why?""

"Because something happened.""

"What?""

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

"The hospital records were changed.""

My chest tightened.

"By who?""

She looked at me.

"I don't know.""

Another secret.

Another incomplete answer.

I slammed my hand onto the desk.

"I need the truth.""

My mother looked broken.

"You think you know everything about your family.""

She shook her head.

"But you don't know what your father sacrificed to protect you.""

I stared at her.

"My father is dead.""

"But his secrets are not.""

Silence.

Then my phone rang.

Marco answered before I could.

He looked at the screen.

"Mr. Moretti.""

"What?""

"It's Matteo.""

My body went still.

"Where?""

"He sent a location.""

I grabbed the phone.

The message contained coordinates.

And one sentence.

"Come alone if you want Sofia alive.""

My mother stood immediately.

"No.""

I looked at her.

"What?""

"Don't go.""

"Why?""

Her face changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

"Because Matteo is not the person you should be afraid of.""

I stared at her.

"Then who?""

She looked toward the window.

And whispered:

"The person who started all of this.""

Before I could ask another question, a sound came from downstairs.

A door closing.

My security team moved instantly.

Marco touched his weapon.

"Someone is inside.""

I looked at my mother.

"You said nobody else knew we were here.""

She looked terrified.

"Because nobody else should.""

We moved toward the hallway.

Then the lights went out.

Again.

The same way they had at the mansion.

The same method.

The same person.

Someone who knew our security systems.

Someone who knew our weaknesses.

Someone close.

A figure appeared at the end of the hallway.

I raised my weapon.

"Who are you?""

The person stepped into the emergency light.

And my heart stopped.

Because it was someone I never expected.

Someone who should have been on my side.

Someone who had spent years pretending to care about my daughter.

My wife.

Clara.

She looked at me with tears in her eyes.

"Adrian...""

I stared at her.

"How did you get here?""

She said nothing.

"Where is Sofia?""

Her lips trembled.

Then she whispered:

"I can explain.""

I took one step forward.

"No.""

My voice was cold.

"You have explained enough.""

She looked down.

"I didn't take her.""

"Then why are you here?""

She swallowed.

"Because Matteo is not the one who has Sofia.""

Everything stopped.

"What did you say?""

Clara looked at me.

"The message was meant to make you blame him.""

I stared at her.

"Then who has my daughter?""

Her eyes filled with fear.

And when she finally answered, I felt the ground disappear beneath me.

"Adrian...""

She whispered:

"Your father.""

I froze.

"My father is dead.""

Clara shook her head.

"Not the man you buried.""

A terrible silence followed.

Then she said:

"The man who has been alive this entire time.""

And suddenly every secret, every lie, and every missing piece of the last three years changed.

Because if Clara was telling the truth...

May you like

Then the enemy inside my family was not just someone I knew.

It was someone I thought I had already lost.
