Chapter 8: The Papers That Stole a Childhood
The gunshot never came.
Deputy Harris moved first.
He grabbed Collins's wrist and slammed it against the SUV.
The sheriff's weapon dropped onto the gravel.
"Don't move!""
Victor stepped backward.
Two men emerged from the vehicles behind him.
Duke moved toward Boone.
"Brother, we've got more trouble.""
Boone kept Sophie behind him.
"Get Evelyn and the girl inside the house.""
Michael struggled against the paramedic.
"Not the house!""
Everyone turned.
Michael pointed toward the farmhouse.
"There's a basement. That's where they kept the records.""
Harris tightened his grip on Collins.
"What basement?""
"The entrance is behind the kitchen pantry.""
Victor suddenly laughed.
"You think those papers will help you?""
Boone looked at him.
"You're going to tell us.""
Victor straightened his jacket.
"Those papers are legally certified. Every signature is valid according to the county records.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"That's impossible.""
Victor turned toward him.
"You signed them yourself.""
Daniel stared at the documents.
Then he recognized his signature.
His face collapsed.
"I signed a temporary guardianship form.""
"You signed several forms.""
"You told me they were for school enrollment!""
Victor shrugged.
"You should have read what you were signing.""
Evelyn slapped the folder out of his hands.
"You used my granddaughter!""
Victor looked at her.
"Mrs. Carter, your granddaughter was never legally your granddaughter.""
Evelyn's eyes filled.
"She's my family.""
"Not according to the state.""
Boone stepped toward Victor.
"Keep talking.""
Victor looked him up and down.
"You're wasting your time. The sheriff controls the records office. The court clerk is on our payroll. The adoption agency has been operating for years.""
Harris looked at Collins.
"Is that true?""
Collins remained silent.
Victor continued.
"Some children were placed with families who wanted them. Some were transferred to relatives. Others were moved across state lines. Everything was documented.""
"Except consent," Michael said.
Victor smiled.
"Consent is a flexible word when nobody can verify the original signature.""
Michael began crying.
"Laura found the falsified records.""
"Laura was becoming a problem.""
"She was a mother!""
Victor looked bored.
"And she should have minded her own business.""
That was when Daniel lunged.
He grabbed Victor by the collar and drove him against the SUV.
"You killed her!""
Victor's head struck the vehicle.
"You did nothing to stop it!""
Daniel hit him again.
Duke pulled Daniel away before another blow landed.
"Not here, brother!""
Victor straightened his jacket, blood running from his lip.
He looked at Daniel.
"Your wife is dead because you were too weak to control her.""
Daniel stopped struggling.
Boone watched his face.
Something inside the man had finally broken.
Harris called for additional units from outside the county.
Collins looked at him.
"You're making a serious mistake, Deputy.""
Harris removed his badge.
"No, sir. I think I made that mistake eleven years ago.""
He placed the badge on the SUV hood.
"You're under arrest pending an independent investigation.""
Collins laughed.
"On whose authority?""
Harris pointed toward the road.
"Federal agents are coming.""
Victor's smile disappeared.
For the first time, he looked genuinely concerned.
Boone turned toward the farmhouse.
"Let's find that basement.""
The kitchen smelled of old coffee and damp wood.
Evelyn held Sophie's hand while Duke checked the hallway.
The pantry door stood at the back.
Behind several shelves of canned food, they found a narrow wooden panel.
Michael had been right.
There was a staircase underneath.
Boone switched on his flashlight.
The steps descended into darkness.
At the bottom was a steel door.
It wasn't locked.
Inside was a room filled with filing cabinets, old computers, and boxes labeled with children's names.
Duke opened the nearest cabinet.
"Jesus Christ.""
Boone approached.
Inside were dozens of folders.
Each contained photographs, birth certificates, school records, and medical documents.
Some folders were marked with dates.
Others had handwritten instructions.
Evelyn opened one.
She immediately dropped it.
It contained a photograph of a little boy.
Underneath it was a note:
Mother deceased. Father unavailable. Transfer approved.
Sophie looked at the photograph.
"That's Noah.""
Boone turned.
"From your school picture?""
She nodded.
"He was my friend.""
Evelyn hugged her.
"Sweetheart, how did you know him?""
"He came to Uncle Ryan's house. He cried every night because he wanted his mommy.""
Duke opened another cabinet.
"This is bigger than we thought.""
Boone found a computer on a desk.
It was still running.
The screen showed a list of names and dates.
One entry caught his attention.
*LAURA REEVES — STATUS: DECEASED.*
Underneath was another line.
*MICHAEL REEVES — STATUS: ACTIVE HOLD.*
Boone stared at the screen.
"Active hold?""
Michael had been brought inside by the paramedics and was now sitting near the basement entrance.
He looked at the screen.
"They were planning to move me.""
"Where?""
"Somewhere out of state.""
Boone clicked the file.
A scanned document appeared.
It was a transport authorization signed by Robert Collins.
The date was three days after Laura's funeral.
Then Boone found another file.
*SOPHIE REEVES — FINAL TRANSFER.*
He opened it.
A destination address appeared.
A private residence in another state.
The receiving guardian's name was Victor Hale.
Evelyn covered her mouth.
"They were going to give her away.""
Michael closed his eyes.
"They were going to make her disappear.""
Sophie stepped toward the desk.
"Mr. Boone?""
He turned.
"What is it?""
She pointed to a small audio icon beside the file.
"Mommy said there was a message.""
Boone clicked it.
Static filled the room.
Then Laura's voice appeared.
"If you're hearing this, they've probably found the records.""
Michael covered his mouth.
Laura continued.
"Michael, I'm sorry. I couldn't get to you. I tried.""
A long pause.
Then her voice became stronger.
"There's something else you need to know about Sophie. Something I didn't tell you because I was afraid they would use it against her.""
Boone glanced at Michael.
Laura continued.
"She isn't Robert Collins's biological granddaughter. He's been pretending to be her grandfather because...""
The recording suddenly cut off.
Duke tapped the screen.
"That's it?""
Boone checked the file.
The recording had been interrupted.
Then a second audio file appeared automatically.
It was dated the night before Laura's accident.
The filename read:
*THE TRUTH ABOUT SOPHIE'S BIRTH.*
Boone pressed play.
Laura's voice returned.
"Michael, if you ever find this, you need to understand why Ryan and Robert want Sophie so badly.""
A breath.
Then she said:
"Because Sophie is the only child who can expose what they did before the agency existed.""
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Michael slowly looked toward Daniel.
Daniel's eyes were fixed on the screen.
Then the farmhouse lights suddenly went out.
A loud metallic bang echoed from upstairs.
Duke raised his flashlight.
"Somebody just locked the basement door.""
Boone moved toward the staircase.
He tried the handle.
It wouldn't turn.
Then they heard footsteps above them.
A familiar voice came through the wooden floor.
Ryan Carter.
"Hello, little girl.""
Sophie began trembling.
Ryan laughed.
"I know you're down there.""
May you like
Then he said something that made Michael collapse against the wall.
"Ask your father what happened to your first mother.""
