Chapter 18: The Girl Who Remembered Everything

"Lily!""

Michael ran through the church.

He searched behind the pews, inside the confession room, and through the small kitchen.

Nothing.

Boone caught up with him.

"Stop. You're not going to find her by running blindly.""

"She's gone!""

"I know.""

"That's my daughter!""

Boone grabbed his shoulders.

"Then think. Where would Margaret take her?""

Michael struggled to breathe.

"She knows the town. She knows the church.""

Agent Shaw entered.

"Margaret is still in custody.""

Michael turned.

"What?""

"She never made it outside. We found her near the rear entrance.""

"Then who took Lily?""

Harris looked toward the shattered window.

"The shooter.""

Boone examined the glass.

"That shot wasn't meant to hit anybody.""

Agent Shaw frowned.

"How do you know?""

"Because the bullet struck the wall above the pews. Whoever fired it wanted everyone on the floor.""

Michael stared.

"A distraction.""

Boone nodded.

"Someone came through the side door while we were down.""

Harris called the officers outside.

"Lock down every road. Check every vehicle leaving this property.""

Agent Shaw turned toward Laura.

"Where is the envelope?""

Laura looked confused.

"What envelope?""

"The one you were holding.""

Laura checked her coat.

Her face went pale.

"It was here.""

Michael grabbed her arm.

"Who took it?""

Laura looked toward the rear door.

"I don't know.""

Boone examined the floor near the pew.

A small piece of paper lay beneath a wooden bench.

He picked it up.

It was torn from the envelope.

Only a few words remained.

*...GARAGE. BAY 12.*

Michael looked at Laura.

"Where?""

She shook her head.

"An old garage outside town.""

Agent Shaw took out her phone.

"Address?""

Laura hesitated.

"There's something you need to know.""

Michael's patience snapped.

"Not another secret.""

Laura looked at him.

"Ryan used that garage to store the original files. He kept copies of every child's placement record there.""

Boone looked at Harris.

"Then that's where the evidence is.""

Agent Shaw nodded.

"We'll send a team.""

Michael shook his head.

"I'm going.""

"No," Agent Shaw replied.

"My daughter is missing.""

"And you're a civilian in an active criminal investigation.""

Michael stepped closer.

"Then arrest me after we find her.""

Boone put a hand on his shoulder.

"We go together.""

Agent Shaw studied them.

Finally, she nodded.

"Nobody moves until I get confirmation from the tactical team.""

But the confirmation never came.

Instead, Harris received a call.

He listened for several seconds.

Then his face changed.

"What do you mean the garage is empty?""

He looked at Boone.

"They found a bloodstained child's sweater.""

Michael went still.

"What color?""

Harris swallowed.

"Pink.""

Michael looked at Laura.

She covered her mouth.

"That's Lily's.""

Agent Shaw immediately ordered the area secured.

They drove to the garage with two police vehicles.

It stood at the edge of an industrial lot, surrounded by rusted fencing and abandoned machinery.

Bay 12 was open.

Inside, the air smelled of oil and dust.

A child's drawing lay on the floor.

It showed two women holding hands with two little girls.

Underneath, in uneven handwriting, were the words:

*MY TWO MOMS. MY TWO SISTERS.*

Michael picked it up.

His hands trembled.

Boone searched the back wall.

He found a metal cabinet with a broken lock.

Inside were folders.

Dozens of them.

Each one carried a child's name.

Tyler Walsh.

Emma Brooks.

Noah Jenkins.

Sophie Bennett.

Lily Reeves.

And beneath Lily's file was another folder.

*AARON BENNETT — INCIDENT REPORT.*

Michael opened it.

The first page was a copy of a police report from five years earlier.

Aaron's death had been classified as an accidental fall at a construction site.

But the attached witness statement told a different story.

A worker named Paul Henson claimed Aaron had argued with a man shortly before the fall.

The man had threatened to expose an illegal adoption operation.

A photograph was attached.

It showed the man standing beside a construction crane.

Michael recognized him immediately.

Robert Collins.

Sheriff Collins.

"Collins killed him," Michael whispered.

Agent Shaw took the report.

"This is significant.""

Boone opened another folder.

Inside was a list of payments.

Some went to Ryan.

Some to Victor Hale.

Others went to county officials.

And one went to a company registered under the name Margaret Carter.

Michael stared.

"She was part of it.""

Laura nodded.

"She handled the placements after I left.""

Agent Shaw turned toward her.

"Then you knew.""

Laura lowered her eyes.

"I suspected.""

Michael shook his head.

"You're telling us this now?""

Laura didn't respond.

A metallic sound came from the far side of the garage.

Boone raised his hand.

Everyone stopped.

Another sound.

A small knock.

Three times.

Michael rushed toward a storage room.

"Lily?""

A faint voice answered.

"Daddy?""

Michael nearly collapsed.

He pulled open the door.

Lily was inside, tied to a chair but unharmed.

He dropped to his knees and untied her.

"Oh, sweetheart.""

She threw her arms around him.

"I was scared.""

"I know. I know.""

"Someone said you weren't coming.""

Michael held her tightly.

"Never believe that.""

Boone checked the room.

"Who brought you here?""

Lily pointed toward a small window.

"The lady with Mommy's face.""

Laura appeared in the doorway.

Lily looked at her.

"Not that Mommy.""

Laura froze.

Lily continued.

"The other one.""

Michael looked up.

"Margaret?""

Lily nodded.

"She said she was taking me somewhere safe.""

Agent Shaw frowned.

"Margaret was in custody.""

Lily shook her head.

"No. The lady who took me wasn't Aunt Margaret.""

Everyone stared.

Lily wiped her eyes.

"She had the same face, but she had a different necklace.""

Laura slowly looked down.

Her crescent-moon necklace hung around her neck.

Michael remembered the photograph.

The woman holding Lily had worn the same necklace.

Then Lily said something else.

"She told me to give you a message.""

Michael brushed the hair away from her forehead.

"What message?""

Lily looked directly at Laura.

"She said Mommy isn't the real Laura.""

Laura's face went white.

Michael stood.

"What does that mean?""

Lily swallowed.

"She said the real Laura died five years ago.""

Nobody moved.

Then Lily reached into her sweater pocket.

She pulled out a small folded photograph.

It showed two identical women standing beside a hospital bed.

One was Laura.

The other was Margaret.

Between them lay a newborn baby.

On the back, someone had written:

*ONE OF US LEFT THE HOSPITAL WITH THE BABY. THE OTHER NEVER LEFT AT ALL.*

Michael looked at Laura.

"Which one are you?""

Laura began crying.

Then Agent Shaw's phone rang.

She answered.

Her expression changed almost immediately.

"What?""

She listened.

Then slowly lowered the phone.

Boone stepped closer.

"What happened?""

Agent Shaw looked at Michael.

"Margaret has been found.""

"Where?""

"At the cemetery.""

Michael frowned.

"Which cemetery?""

Agent Shaw swallowed.

"The one where Laura Reeves was buried.""

Laura covered her mouth.

Agent Shaw continued.

"They opened the grave.""

Michael looked at Laura.

"Whose body was inside?""

Agent Shaw's voice dropped.

"Margaret Carter's.""

A long silence followed.

Then Laura whispered:

"That's impossible.""

Boone stared at her.

"Why?""

Laura looked at the photograph in Michael's hand.

"Because Margaret is standing right here.""

She turned toward the doorway.

May you like

But the woman who had been standing there was gone.

And on the floor, beside the open storage-room door, lay Laura's crescent-moon necklace.
