Chapter 3: The Man in the Black Pickup
Boone had seen men frightened before.
He had seen men panic when police lights appeared behind them. He had seen criminals reach for weapons when their plans collapsed.
But Daniel Carter wasn't frightened of being arrested.
He was frightened of the man sitting inside that black pickup.
And that made Boone pay attention.
"Everybody move away from the windows," he ordered.
Duke immediately stepped toward the entrance.
Another biker, Mack, moved toward the kitchen.
The waitress stood frozen beside the counter.
"What's happening?""
"Lock the front door," Boone said.
"And call 911.""
Daniel grabbed his mother's arm.
"Give me the phone.""
Evelyn pulled away.
"Not another step.""
"Mom, you don't understand!""
"I understand that Laura was afraid of you.""
Daniel's expression twisted.
"Laura was unstable!""
"She was my daughter-in-law!""
"She was destroying my family!""
Sophie began crying again.
Boone crouched beside her.
"Hey. Look at me.""
She lifted her face.
"Is Uncle Ryan coming to get you?""
She nodded.
"Did he ever hurt you?""
Sophie hesitated.
Then she whispered:
"He made Tyler disappear.""
Boone's eyes narrowed.
"What do you mean, disappear?""
"Tyler was there one day. Then he wasn't.""
Daniel turned sharply.
"That's enough!""
Boone stood.
"Sit down.""
"I am not sitting down in some roadside restaurant while strangers interrogate my daughter!""
"Then stop acting like you have something to hide.""
Outside, the black pickup's driver's door opened.
A tall man stepped out.
He wore a black baseball cap and a dark jacket. His beard was neatly trimmed, and he moved with the relaxed confidence of someone who believed nobody would challenge him.
Ryan Carter.
Daniel's older brother.
He walked toward the entrance without looking around.
Duke watched him through the window.
"That's him.""
Boone nodded.
"Keep the door shut.""
Ryan pulled the handle.
Locked.
He knocked twice.
Then he smiled through the glass.
It wasn't a friendly smile.
He pointed at Daniel.
Daniel immediately began shaking his head.
Ryan took out his phone.
A second later, Daniel's phone vibrated.
He looked at the screen.
Ryan's name.
Boone watched him answer.
"Hello?""
Ryan's voice was loud enough to hear through the speaker.
"Daniel, open the door.""
"I can't.""
"Why not?""
"There's a problem.""
Ryan looked through the window.
His eyes landed on Sophie.
Then on the phone in Boone's hand.
His smile vanished.
"What did you do?""
Daniel lowered his voice.
"She found Laura's phone.""
There was a long silence.
Then Ryan said something that made Daniel grip the counter.
"Then you have five minutes to fix it.""
The call ended.
Boone stepped closer.
"Your brother seems like a pleasant guy.""
Daniel looked at him.
"You have no idea.""
"Then explain.""
Daniel shook his head.
"I can't.""
Evelyn moved toward him.
"You can start by telling me why Laura was recording you.""
Daniel looked at his mother.
For the first time, tears appeared in his eyes.
"I didn't kill her.""
The words landed heavily.
Evelyn went completely still.
Nobody had mentioned murder.
Nobody had accused him of killing Laura.
Boone's eyes narrowed.
"Who said anything about killing her?""
Daniel stared at the phone.
Then he looked toward the window.
Ryan was still standing outside.
He was no longer smiling.
"Because that's what everyone is going to think," Daniel whispered.
Duke crossed his arms.
"Why?""
Daniel swallowed.
"Because Ryan was driving behind her that night.""
Evelyn took a step backward.
"What?""
Daniel looked at his mother.
"He followed her.""
"Why?""
"She had taken documents from his office.""
"What documents?""
Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.
"Records. Payments. Names. Everything.""
Boone glanced at the phone.
"Then why did you let the police call it an accident?""
Daniel's eyes filled.
"Because Ryan told me if I said anything, Sophie would be next.""
The diner became silent.
Even the rain seemed quieter.
Sophie stepped closer to Evelyn.
"Grandma?""
Evelyn wrapped her arms around her.
"Yes, baby?""
"Mommy said Daddy was scared.""
Daniel broke down.
He covered his face and began crying.
"I tried to protect you.""
Sophie shook her head.
"You didn't protect Mommy.""
Daniel had no answer.
Boone turned toward Duke.
"Call the sheriff. Tell them we have a possible witness in a suspicious death investigation.""
Duke nodded and pulled out his phone.
Outside, Ryan suddenly walked away from the entrance.
He returned to his truck.
But instead of getting inside, he opened the rear door.
Boone watched him reach beneath the seat.
When Ryan stood again, something metallic was visible in his right hand.
"Everybody down!"" Boone shouted.
The first gunshot shattered the front window.
Glass exploded across the counter.
The waitress screamed and dropped behind the register.
Boone grabbed Sophie and pulled her down behind the booth.
Evelyn covered the child's head with her body.
Duke dragged Daniel to the floor.
Another shot struck the wall above them.
"Get away from the windows!"" Mack yelled.
Boone looked toward the kitchen.
"Back exit! Move!""
He carried Sophie toward the rear of the diner.
Evelyn followed, clutching the backpack.
Daniel crawled behind them.
Then Sophie suddenly grabbed Boone's vest.
"Wait!""
"We have to move, sweetheart.""
She shook her head desperately.
"There's something else.""
"What?""
She opened the backpack and pulled out a small envelope.
It was sealed with clear tape.
Written across the front were the words:
*FOR THE PERSON WHO FINDS SOPHIE.*
Boone stared at it.
"Where did you get this?""
"Mommy put it in my backpack before she died.""
"Why didn't you show us earlier?""
Sophie looked toward her father.
"Because Daddy told me if anybody found it, Uncle Ryan would take Grandma away too.""
Boone slowly opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph, a folded document, and a handwritten note.
The photograph showed Ryan Carter standing beside three children.
Tyler.
Emma.
And Noah.
But there was someone else in the picture.
A woman Boone recognized immediately.
Not because he knew her personally.
Because he had seen her face on the local news three weeks earlier.
She was a missing-persons investigator who had vanished while looking into the disappearance of two children.
Her name was Detective Sarah Mitchell.
On the back of the photograph, Laura had written:
Ryan doesn't work alone.
Boone unfolded the document.
It was a list of names, addresses, dates, and payments.
At the bottom was a signature.
Daniel Carter.
He looked up.
Daniel was staring at the paper.
His face was completely white.
"Boone," he whispered.
"What's this?""
Daniel's lips trembled.
Then he said the one thing that changed Boone's understanding of the entire night.
"That's not a list of children Ryan took.""
Boone frowned.
"Then what is it?""
Daniel looked toward Sophie.
"Those are the children he was supposed to deliver.""
Outside, Ryan climbed into his black pickup.
The engine roared.
Before driving away, he lowered the window and held up his phone.
It rang inside the diner.
Daniel looked at the screen.
A message appeared.
*YOU HAVE UNTIL MIDNIGHT. BRING THE GIRL, OR EVERYONE IN THAT DINER DIES.*
Boone read it twice.
Then he looked at the little girl trembling in his arms.
Sophie slowly raised her eyes.
"Mr. Boone?""
"Yeah, sweetheart?""
She swallowed.
"Mommy said if Uncle Ryan ever came back, I should tell you something.""
Boone leaned closer.
"What did she say?""
Sophie's voice dropped to a whisper.
"She said Uncle Ryan isn't my real uncle.""
Boone stared at her.
May you like
Then Sophie delivered the final sentence.
"He's the man who took my real daddy.""
