Chapter 6: The Secret Sarah Left Behind

Nobody slept that night.

Not Frank.

Not Lily.

Not anyone.

The truth had become too large to ignore.

Sarah Collins was alive.

Frank’s brother was alive.

And someone had spent months making sure nobody discovered either fact.

The Steel Ravens moved Lily and Ben to a safe location nearby.

Detective Reed stayed involved, though Frank could tell the officer was struggling with everything he had believed about the case.

The official story was collapsing.

A missing woman.

Two missing children.

A false guardian.

A hidden room.

A stolen identity.

It was no longer a simple family dispute.

It was something deeper.

Something dangerous.

Early the next morning, Frank returned to Sarah’s house.

Alone.

He stood in the kitchen where Lily had said her mother kept her journal.

He looked around.

Then he noticed something.

A small scratch on the floor.

Behind the refrigerator.

Frank moved it carefully.

There was a hidden compartment in the wall.

Inside was a notebook.

Old.

Worn.

Protected inside a plastic bag.

Sarah’s journal.

Frank opened it.

The first pages were normal.

A mother writing about her children.

Lily’s first day of school.

Ben learning to ride a bicycle.

Small moments.

Happy moments.

Then the tone changed.

The handwriting became rushed.

Fearful.

*Dean knows about the money.*

Frank continued reading.

*He knows about the insurance. He thinks I don’t see what he’s doing.*

Another page.

*I made a mistake trusting him.*

Another.

*I found out what happened to Michael.*

Frank stopped.

Michael.

His brother.

The next line made his hands tighten.

*Michael did not disappear. He was taken.*

Frank closed his eyes.

For years, he had lived with the belief that his brother had simply vanished.

But Sarah knew.

She knew the truth.

He kept reading.

*Dean was involved.*

Another page.

*But Dean is not the person controlling everything.*

Frank looked up.

Not Dean?

Then who?

The next pages were missing.

Someone had torn them out.

But one sentence remained.

Written on the final page.

*If Frank finds this, tell him the truth about Michael before it is too late.*

Frank stood there silently.

For the first time in decades…

He felt like a soldier again.

Not because he was ready for a fight.

Because someone had given him a mission.

Find Sarah.

Protect Lily and Ben.

Uncover what happened to Michael.

When he returned outside, Renee was waiting.

“You found something.””

Frank nodded.

“She knew my brother.””

Renee looked surprised.

“What did she say?””

Frank looked toward the trees.

“She said Michael was taken.””

Renee became quiet.

“By who?””

Frank looked at the house.

“I don’t know yet.””

Then his phone rang.

Detective Reed.

Frank answered.

“Talk.””

The detective’s voice was serious.

“We found something.””

“What?””

“Dean’s vehicle records.””

Frank waited.

“Three months ago, the same week Sarah disappeared, Dean rented a storage unit.””

Frank’s eyes narrowed.

“Location?””

The detective gave him the address.

Frank immediately recognized it.

An old industrial area outside town.

“Anything else?””

“Yes.””

The detective paused.

“The storage unit was emptied yesterday.””

Frank looked back toward the house.

Someone knew they were close.

“Who rented the unit?””

Detective Reed answered.

“Dean.””

Frank nodded.

Then came the part that changed everything.

“But there’s another name attached.””

“Whose?””

The detective hesitated.

“Michael Miller.””

Frank froze.

His brother’s name.

Again.

After all these years.

Someone had been using Michael’s identity.

Or Michael had never been gone.

Frank gathered the Steel Ravens.

No speeches.

No dramatic promises.

They all understood.

A missing brother.

A missing mother.

Two children who needed protection.

That was enough.

Before leaving, Frank looked at Lily.

She held the photograph of her mother and Michael.

“Frank?””

“Yes?””

“Are you going to find my mom?””

Frank looked at the girl.

And gave her the only answer he could.

“Yes.””

She swallowed.

“And my dad?””

Frank looked at the picture.

At the man he once called brother.

“We’re going to find him too.””

As the motorcycles started, Frank noticed something on the ground near the driveway.

A small envelope.

No name.

No address.

Just one sentence written across the front.

*You should have left the past buried.*

Frank opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

A recent photograph.

Of Sarah.

Alive.

May you like

And standing beside her…

Was Michael.
