Calm

Chapter 5: The Man Who Lied First

Detective Thomas Reed had seen hundreds of crimes.

He had seen people cry.

He had seen people scream.

He had seen innocent people panic.

But he had learned one important lesson.

Fear did not always mean guilt.

And confidence did not always mean innocence.

That was why he watched Dean carefully.

Dean stood beside the police vehicle, pretending to be calm.

“My girlfriend’s daughter has been manipulated,” Dean said.

“These people found her and are creating some kind of story.””

Frank almost laughed.

Almost.

Instead, he looked at the detective.

“Ask Lily what happened.””

Dean immediately interrupted.

“She’s a child.””

Frank turned.

“Yes. That’s why someone should listen to her.””

Detective Reed raised a hand.

“Everyone stop.””

The authority in his voice silenced them.

He looked at Lily.

“Lily, can you tell me what happened?””

The girl looked nervous.

Renee held her hand.

Lily took a deep breath.

“Dean took me and my brother away after my mom disappeared.””

Dean shook his head.

“She’s confused.””

The detective looked at him.

“I didn’t ask you.””

Dean stopped talking.

Lily continued.

“He told everyone Mom left.””

“Did she?””

“No.””

“How do you know?””

Lily looked down.

“Because she wouldn’t leave us.””

Detective Reed studied her.

“And Ben?””

“He locked him in the shed.””

Dean immediately stepped forward.

“That’s impossible.””

Frank looked at him.

“Why?””

Dean froze.

Because he had answered too quickly.

Detective Reed noticed.

“Why would you know it’s impossible?””

Dean looked away.

Nobody spoke.

The truth was starting to show.

Slowly.

Piece by piece.

The detective examined the hidden room.

Then the camera.

Then the documents.

The insurance paperwork.

The recording from Sarah’s phone.

Every piece added another layer to the same story.

Dean was losing control.

Finally, he snapped.

“You don’t understand!””

Everyone looked at him.

Dean’s breathing became heavier.

“She ruined everything.””

Frank stepped closer.

“Who?””

Dean said nothing.

But Frank already knew.

Sarah.

Dean was not talking about a stranger.

He was talking about the woman he claimed had abandoned her children.

Detective Reed lowered his voice.

“What happened to Sarah Collins?””

Dean looked around.

For the first time, he looked like a trapped man.

“She found out.””

“Found out what?””

Dean clenched his jaw.

Then suddenly, a loud sound came from the road.

Another vehicle.

Everyone turned.

A black pickup truck stopped near the property.

A man stepped out.

Frank recognized him immediately.

Not because he knew him.

Because Dean reacted.

The man looked at Dean.

“You said this was handled.””

Dean’s face went pale.

Detective Reed moved toward him.

“Who are you?””

The stranger ignored him.

His eyes stayed on Dean.

“You had one job.””

Frank’s instincts immediately warned him.

This was bigger than Dean.

Much bigger.

The stranger finally noticed Frank.

Then the Steel Ravens.

His expression changed.

“Steel Ravens?””

Frank said nothing.

The man laughed quietly.

“That’s interesting.””

Renee stepped forward.

“What’s interesting?””

The man smiled.

“Your club has no idea what your old friend was hiding.””

Frank’s eyes narrowed.

“What old friend?””

The man looked directly at him.

“Your brother.””

The words hit harder than Frank expected.

The stranger continued.

“Sarah knew the truth about him.””

Frank moved closer.

“What truth?””

The man smiled.

“That he never died.””

Nobody spoke.

The world seemed to stop.

Frank’s brother.

The man everyone believed was gone.

Alive?

Impossible.

But Frank had learned something over decades.

Impossible things were usually just things people worked very hard to hide.

Detective Reed looked confused.

“Who is this?””

The stranger turned.

“My name is Vincent Cole.””

Frank stared.

The name meant nothing.

Until Lily spoke.

Quietly.

“Mom knew that name.””

Everyone looked at her.

Lily hugged Ben tighter.

“She wrote it in her journal.””

Frank’s heart sank.

“The journal?””

Lily nodded.

“She said Vincent was dangerous.””

Vincent smiled.

“That’s what Sarah thought.””

Frank stepped forward.

“Where is Sarah?””

For the first time, Vincent stopped smiling.

Then he said something nobody expected.

“She’s alive.””

Lily gasped.

Frank stared.

“What did you say?””

Vincent looked at him.

“Sarah Collins is alive.””

Hope appeared in Lily’s eyes.

But Frank did not feel relief.

Not yet.

Because if Sarah was alive…

Why had she left her children?

Why had she hidden?

And why had Dean been allowed to control everything?

Vincent took one step back.

“She wanted you to find the truth.””

Frank looked at him.

“Where is she?””

Vincent glanced toward the forest behind the house.

Then he smiled.

“You’re asking the wrong question.””

Frank’s expression hardened.

“What’s the right one?””

May you like

Vincent answered:

“Who is she hiding from?””
