Chapter 9: Margaret’s Biggest Lie
The lawyer’s office was smaller than I expected.
I thought someone handling a family trust would have a large building with expensive furniture and polished floors.
Instead, it was simple.
Quiet.
Professional.
Almost ordinary.
Which somehow made everything feel more serious.
Because this wasn’t a dramatic confrontation.
This was reality.
Daniel sat beside me.
Robert sat across from us.
And Margaret’s carefully protected secrets were about to become official records.
The attorney, Mr. Harris, adjusted his glasses.
“I have been expecting this meeting.””
Daniel frowned.
“You knew?””
Mr. Harris nodded.
“Your mother contacted me several times.””
My stomach tightened.
“What did she want?””
He looked uncomfortable.
“She wanted information about how much control she had over the trust.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“And?””
“I told her the truth.””
“What truth?””
“That she was not the owner.””
The room went silent.
“She was the manager,” Mr. Harris explained.
“Nothing more.””
Daniel looked down.
All those years.
All that control.
And she had never truly owned anything.
She had just convinced everyone she did.
“What else?”” Daniel asked.
Mr. Harris opened a file.
“There is another issue.””
I immediately felt the shift.
“What issue?””
He looked at Daniel.
“Your mother requested changes.””
“What kind of changes?””
“She wanted the trust transferred.””
Daniel frowned.
“To who?””
Mr. Harris hesitated.
Then answered.
“To a person named in a separate agreement.””
I felt my heart drop.
“Who?””
He placed a document on the table.
Daniel read the name.
And his face went completely pale.
I knew before he spoke.
“Who is it?”” I asked.
He looked at me.
“The woman from the photograph.””
For a moment, nobody moved.
The woman Margaret wanted him to marry.
The woman she had tried to bring into his life.
The woman who was supposed to replace me.
“She was involved in the trust?”” Daniel asked.
Mr. Harris nodded.
“Your mother attempted to make her a beneficiary.””
I stared at the documents.
Everything connected.
The setup.
The pressure.
The manipulation.
Margaret hadn’t just wanted me gone because she disliked me.
She had a financial reason.
She wanted a different future.
A future where Daniel belonged to someone she selected.
A future where she remained in control.
Daniel looked devastated.
“She planned my entire life.””
Nobody answered.
Because it was true.
Mr. Harris closed the file.
“There is one more thing.””
I looked up.
“What?””
He glanced at Daniel.
“Your mother was not acting alone.””
The words changed the atmosphere instantly.
Daniel frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Mr. Harris looked serious.
“She had assistance.””
“From who?””
A long pause.
Then he said:
“Someone inside your family.””
My blood ran cold.
Because suddenly, the betrayal was much bigger than Margaret.
Someone else had been helping her.
Someone else had been watching.
And someone else had been waiting for the right moment to destroy everything.
Daniel looked at Robert.
Robert looked confused.
Then everyone looked at me.
Because the question was no longer whether Margaret had secrets.
She did.
The question was:
May you like
Who else had been protecting them?
And why were they so afraid of me discovering the truth?
